I thank you for that.  But a spark is not a fire.

I've only ever used Sonar, all the way back to Cakewalk Professional 3. The only other DAW I've installed is Reaper - and I only use that for one specific thing. It has that cool tempo/pitch slider control which is great for figuring out licks and so on from an audio file. Being able to slow things down and retain the pitch with just a simple adjustment is a very handy tool.
 
I still use Adobe Audition/Soundforge for deep editing....I've made a lot of multi-samples over the years, so I use them for that, but I've never considered switching DAWS. Sonar does everything I need to do as far as recording midi and audio is concerned, and it's been a very stable platform for me.
 
Now buying lots of hardware...Well, ya I'm guilty of that, but you NEED toys man!...and I like hardware. Hands on baby! I like it that way. You just don't get the same feeling from buying software.

The answer lies in the question. No need to actually justify. There is nothing inherently wrong with getting something just becaus you wanted it. If dealing with pissed spouse, by all means quote all the marketing hype and include nebulous numerical figures that will bore her/him into dropping the subject. :)

Hmmm apart from the need to justify it to yourself after buying your 17th compressor because you forced yourself to buy into the hype. I don't even tell the wife anymore, I've used up all of my reasoning to the public. I actually find myself pointlessly scouring the software forum hoping to find something to waste my money on that I can't even afford. I do make myself feel better by encouraging hher to 'treat herself' to that new handbag, so everyone's a winner!
