Friends--remix, now with new piano part

Herb Hartley (GuitarHacker) and I did another collab--we just took off on my boring keys-only piece 'Good Friends' since we couldn't come up with anything else that we both liked! This is definitely more up-tempo. I did the keys and he did everything else. Comments are welcome, as always.

Edit:
After I heard what Herb did with the guitars, I wanted to go back and do a new piano part. So here it is. For those of you who liked it the first time, sorry.

I could definitely see that as the soundtrack music for the 'days we fell in love' montage of a romantic movie.

BTW, MB, speaking of romantic movies, if you've not seen the two movies Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, check them out. You will likely not regret it. Two of my favorite romantic movies. The movies were shot 9 years apart, with the same actors, who are therefore of course 9 years older, so it's a very interesting set of movies, since you get to see them young and idealistic and later as more mature and seasoned veterans of the love thing. They star Ethan Hawke and the lovely Julie Deply, who also co-wrote it with the director, Linklater who has done some amazing work.

They are just amazingly beautiful movies, both of them.

Now that I think about it, I think I've seen them, but why not watch them again?! (Actually most of the time I watch movies anymore I'm on the forums and writing emails, and/or wishing I could be on the piano.) But I get something out of them. Sometimes.

Yeah, I heard a rumor that the Almond Bros were thinking about a remix with fleetwood mac called "husk"? That would be a classic.

The guitars are what gave me an allman vibe, but the overall way it moved as well, that’s not a bad thing!! I loved it!

A good smooth tune, a great piano tone although it sounds a bit drowned out, I wish I could hear the piano more but it may just be because I'm using headphones presently, so as not to keep the neighbours awake.

Nice arrangement all round, well done the pair of you.

btw Almond (Nut) = Robby, All-Man = Jonbouy...

I like the Allman Bros vibe to it.

As I mixed this, the piano took a back seat to the guitars. Sorry Janet.... she did provide the tune that inspired the guitars....but they just wanted to carry this, and I could not find a way to put the piano upfront without loosing the feel to the song. I don't hear the Allmans in this..but I'm glad you all do....it's a nice compliment.

I hear bits of a song in this called groovey kind of Love....I think the mindbenders did it in the 60's and I think Phil Collins redid it sometime later.

    Anyway...thanks.

    Janet

I have to agree with Jon on this. The piano is so far in the background that half the time I can barely hear it.

I will say that I read the post too fast and went and listened to Good Friends again and wondered what the other instruments were supposed to be. 3/4 of the way thru I figured something is wrong, so I read the post a bit more carefully and went to the right piece.

I'd still like to see Good Friends in a duet with a Violin.

Don't get me wrong, this was very nice, but I think the song lends itself better towards being unplugged.

    Well done

I do not hear the Allman Bros much myself, but then again I am not hugely up on them. Don't hear Groovy Kind of Love either though Herb.

The mix did not come across all that well here. It seems a tad dull and washed out. I agree the piano disappeared at times. Maybe draw a volume envelope for that track?

The song, the piano and guitar playing were outstanding of course. Bravo for that.

Thanks, Ron. Herb mixed this and I wasn't gonna fight him about it. I really do like what he did with it and it doesn't really need the piano. If I feel like it someday, I may go put another piano part with it. It depends on if he'll send me the .cwb file or not. lol.

As far as Good Friends--I plan to add at least violin to it some day too. Just have to get in the mood. I KNOW it needs something. (We'll have to see how many versions of this song we can come up with!)

Your last sentence: which song lends itself to being unplugged? This one or the first one? You lost me there.

    Thanks to you, too, Jon!

    Both.

But then look at the kind of music I compose and think about how many of those instruments get plugged into anything.

But then my Acoustic Guitar is also electric, so I am not adverse to scattering some electrons.

    Mamabear,
I liked what Guitar Hacker did with the song. Maybe the mix can still be worked with to find spots where a stronger piano in the parts would still make sense, without taking away from the really nice guitar parts that Hacker came up with. Thats really the fun of this software, you never have to be finished with a tune.
I have been having a hard time recording anything new, because I am still playing with the music I have already recorded. I just keep trying things to what I have. Thats my fun.
Good job on this post. I liked "Good Friends" as well. Well played.

Yes, Bruce, I really like what he did with it too. I think it's great. And yes, I certainly don't want to take away from that.

But sometime you oughta leave your other songs alone and try something new! But then again, if you're having fun, keep at it! lol

I too had the same thought about the piano being a little hidden in the mix. Otherwise, it is a great tune, great mix!

    Hello Janet / Hacker,

I liked this song a lot. Janet I've listened to your other songs (all great) which the piano is the main instrument (of course) and I always appreciate it when a talented musician can take a back seat and throw down a little rythym or melodic embellishment. Not many (at least in my experience) do. You guys play well together. Hacker... your guitar lines always tell a story. Good stuff.

Very nice feel to the song. I think the piano and guitars are mixed well. My only comment would be more variety on the drums. I really like the parts with duet guitars with piano support.

    Great job.

Janet, your piano lays a solid fundament for Herb's guitar, but I was waiting for you to take off on some lead chops. However, herb, your guitar playing is terrific, and the melody, especially with the harmony guitar, brings Dickey Betts to mind. Terrific phrasing throughout. It sure sounds ready for lyrics, but it stands well on its own too. Very clean mix.

Geeezzz, Im slippin' here! How am I missing these? This definitly has that southern rock/country vibe. Nice blend of the git and piano. I agree with MC that maybe a piano solo would have been a nice touch too. Kudos to the both of you for making a good song! Mix was good too.

Mamabear, I listened to The Storm in Me first, and then I figured as long as I was at your Soundclick page, I'd listen to Friends. I was going to ask you how you got such a realistic guitar sound, and then I saw this post. I like the song. It would be nice to hear a little more piano somehow, but I don't have a good suggestion at the moment how to do that. I want to hear all of the sounds!

Larry, Russell, Jon, Robby, etc.--now it's different--there's a piano part. If you liked it before, then maybe you won't this time around, but anyway. Guitars are the same mostly. Any crits about the mix can be directed to Herb. Anything about the piano, well you-know-who!
