Hi Jeff,

I have 2 of the silver face LA-610 units.

I frequently use one as a bass preamp because it works very nicely as such.

I have passive P-Bass pickups... here are some very crude/rough guidelines for starting point while tracking my P-Bass into SONAR.

I use the 2.2Mohm instrument input.

I set my gain to 12 or 1 o'clock. (5 or 6 on the dial)

I sometimes bump the upper midrange on the EQ. ( 4.5 or 7k +3 dB)

I use a bit of gain reduction... lets say the knob s set at 9 o'clock.  ( 2 on the dial )

I use make up gain as required to get a nice signal into SONAR.

Now, depending on the character of the bass tone I adjust all those settings to taste while listening.

I might drive the input harder for an aggressive tone and leave the GR light or I might back off the input, squash the Gain reduction a bunch and use a lot of make up gain for a round fat tone.

 It just depends.

The act of playing or singing into the compressor in real time informs your performance style and inspires you to use techniques you might not consider if you simply record dry and compress later.

 Your mileage may vary!

 Have fun!

 Good luck!!!

 best regards,
mike

I have not been using hardware compressors while tracking. I need to experiment more with that.

If you're working in 24 bit for recording you shouldn't need to use compression because your noise floor is so low and dynamic range so wide. If you're finding that you're not, then perhaps some better techniques for recording may be in order. Better quality mic perhaps, use techniques like putting the singer in a corner (facing out toward center of the room) with a duvet behind them is just one technique to capture a cleaner vocal recording.

BTW
IK Multimedia is having a sale on T-Racks singles @ $39 each plugin. Not sure how that works for your budget. Check out esoundz.com maybe they have a group buy going or something to better that offer.

So basically you are saying that your procedure makes your butt look big?

I may (or may not) resemble that remark, but I like my fellow forumites far too much to post the proof. If only I could reverse the procedure...
