Thanks Brandon, and I personally cannot get enough of the Cakewalk videos. Now we need one of you producing a tune from start to finish - in various genres to really show off X1's abilities. Take your time.

Music Miscreant

Once again, thanks for the info.
'a special personality and a strong constitution to be able to do this kind of work' well, who would've guessed.
Anyway, a bit of 8.5 here & there.
Mmm, not really what's intimated here...
Watch the video with composer Sean Murray discussing using SONAR X1 to score Call of Duty®: Black Ops.

It's hard to say, not being Sean, when exactly he started composing this music. One could say an album was recorded and mixed in DAWx at so and so studio, but surely there was writing work etc done potentially on other systems in other locations. So I guess it's hard to say where one ends and the other stops. I know Sean used X1 during the process as he points out. When precisely he considers the start point of the project to be and how much of what or the other he was using I can't claim to be certain of.

Scoring stages are usually considered recording studios. :-)

I like this quote by Shawn "to tell you the truth... they don't even want to hear the synthesizers"... I admire honesty.

Can't Shawn just print out from the staff view? Why does it take a music preparation, orchestrator, and copyist to prepare the sheet music?

Do they use Sibelius?

I've read that Black Ops was recorded at Warner Brothers Eastwood Scoring Stage
where "All standard formats of recording and projection are available."

and

that Shawn uses "use a PC running Sonar X1 as my recording and midi computer" and "a Mac running Pro Tools for master mixes in 5.1 stems."

I enjoyed this video interview... IMO, it was very well done.

best regards,
mike

I had a question about the process and was wondering if anyone knew where and what the final recordings were recorded into? Sean says at one point the 40 or 50 audio tracks are recorded "...into whatever recording device you're using."

Are those live mic's being recorded by X1 as well for 40 or 50 tracks then into a Master track in X1? Or what?

Not sure Larry. I'm sure the recording device(s) varies from location t location. I'll ask Jimmy if he can get some more information from Sean about these specifics. These are good questions also to keep in mind for Sean when we do round 2.
I am guessing any of the orchestral parts will not be recorded at his studio but at some other facility that can handle that kind of thing and I am guessing such a facility will be using Pro Tools HD for the actual recording.

There are studios geared for this kind of stuff:

Maybe he means the music starts about 10 seconds into that video? That would be correct. There is the standard sound design on the Cakewalk stuff before that but no music. That seems entirely correct. Although the music start seems a bit cut short or a touch early compared to the speed of the woosh. . It could have been a little better edited IMO. (I'm a huge nit pick about this kind of thing so never mind me ) (And Sean's last words are slightly cut off by the music swell).

That's good... because I, for one, am disturbed by the fact that Call of Duty Black Ops features an assassination scenario of an actual living person. I don't see any good reason for Cakewalk to brag about it's contribution to an endeavor to sell that sort of *entertainment*.

Edit:
For those of you who obviously have a reduced number of operating brain cells and have PM'd me complaining that my complaint above is bigoted in itself I would say this:

Calling for the exclusion of bigots preaching political or religious hate is hardly being bigoted - it's merely calling for enforcement of the TOS

Oh get over youself...poor little commie Fidel Castro a target in a game...is that you Michael Moore? Sean Penn?

So if said target was an upstanding capitalist American would you feel the same way about it?
I find your attitude offensive, bigots like you should not be tolerated.

Hey Brandon, I really enjoyed the interview too...hey not to bring a negative in here but you might want to tell whomever is encoding the video for web to deinterlace it (evidenced by the distracting jagged tracers there with any movement).
