Just a little curious, but wasn't 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' out way before X1?

I'd love to see more of him in action with SONAR. Sounds like his projects must be pretty nuts, it would be cool to see how he actually sets up and composes.

Not that track folders aren't cool and all, but that's really the biggest SONAR-specific thing they talk about.

Riiiight. The games industry now dwarves the film industry. Highest film industry revenue ever was 2007: Just below 10 Billion dollars. The games industry revenue for 2009: close to 60 billion dollars.

There is money in the games industry and there are many people that like to work in that industry.

(Ah there's the sarcasm I've become so accustomed to. Like an old shoe I tell ya. )

Kidding aside, anyone who knows about the industry knows there are lots of people trying to get into the field. It can be as lucrative as film or TV and moreso in some cases - and increasingly so. It can also be of an arguably higher-profile in some cases. Even big name acts want their songs included in video games because it's one of the handful of viable revenue streams in the modern economic model musicians and composers find themselves in.

You might even find it surprising that that thousands of people even go to see "video game music" performed live http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Games_Live

If a person wants to get their music heard and/or wants to make a professional living from making music, ignoring such a huge industry capable of selling such vast numbers of units would be foolish. Many video game composers are also crossovers that score for film and TV as well. It's a pretty fine line these days if you really look at it.

He did a demo with some of his projects at NAMM. This interview was actually done prior to that and I believe was done around the time of the blog post on the subject - shortly after Black ops was released.

We're going to create a newer video when we can get some time with Sean to go deeper into his projects and his techniques.

Sean had it long before it was released. I imagine he was using 8.5 here and there as well before X1 was into beta, but I don't know for sure. I know these projects actually come together very quickly, which is why it sometimes takes a special personality and a strong constitution to be able to do this kind of work. I've seen many a composer pulling multiple all-nighters in the days and weeks before delivery dates.

They've been working on the patch since November 10th.

Some say it was the most successful game ever.

    http://news.softpedia.com...Station-3-165991.shtml

"Call of Duty: Black Ops has been one of the most anticipated titles of the year, promising to continue in the highly successful footsteps of last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

After its release at the beginning of the week, gamers were shocked to see that the game they eagerly awaited was pretty broken, not only the PC, as highlighted by the dozens of comments we received at yesterday's story, but also on the PlayStation 3, as seen on multiple topics in Treyarch's forum."

    http://gamedrone.net/2010...-with-bugs-and-issues/

    "
Call of Duty: Black Ops returns the franchise to competent multiplayer gameplay with the restoration of dedicated servers, console commands and a server browser. It also includes numerous excellent maps with great design and much better balance in terms of weaponry and killstreaks than Modern Warfare 2. By all rights it should be a halfway decent multiplayer game with a fairly competent singleplayer campaign right now. But that would be discounting Treyarch’s incredible ability to screw up any PC game they develop – a feat they’ve managed to pull off yet again with Black Ops. The game is getting rave reviews across the globe based on review copies that do not represent the final product. Meanwhile all the gamers who actually bought a copy are experiencing a game riddled with performance issues, bugs and poorly implemented features that are a testament to Activision/Treyarch’s utter and complete lack of QA for PC releases.
Some of you may recall how gamers were warned away from Elemental: War of Magic a few months back. That game was released in much better state than Call of Duty: Black Ops – and I’ve played both – and its developers actually immediately sat down to patching and keeping the community in the loop. The only official notice from Activision/Treyarch has been that they’re aware of the fact that the game is broken all to hell on PC."

That's good... because I, for one, am disturbed by the fact that Call of Duty Black Ops features an assassination scenario of an actual living person.

I don't see any good reason for Cakewalk to brag about it's contribution to an endeavor to sell that sort of *entertainment*.

That was really interesting interview. I always wondered how those things were created. My first thought was, "Wow that sounds awesome - so real." I guess I know why now.

I had a question about the process and was wondering if anyone knew where and what the final recordings were recorded into? Sean says at one point the 40 or 50 audio tracks are recorded "...into whatever recording device you're using."

Are those live mic's being recorded by X1 as well for 40 or 50 tracks then into a Master track in X1? Or what?

Just a little curious, but wasn't 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' out way before X1?
    The opposite being intimated here...
Watch the video with composer Sean Murray discussing using SONAR X1 to score Call of Duty®: Black Ops.

I believe they were both officially released just a few weeks apart from each other.

Thanks for that info Brandon. Would that've been enough time to score & record Black Ops on X1 do you think? Just curious.

Once again, thanks for the info.
'a special personality and a strong constitution to be able to do this kind of work' well, who would've guessed.
Anyway, a bit of 8.5 here & there.
Mmm, not really what's intimated here...

Not sure Larry. I'm sure the recording device(s) varies from location t location. I'll ask Jimmy if he can get some more information from Sean about these specifics. These are good questions also to keep in mind for Sean when we do round 2.
