Thanks. Whenever I purchase something I like to hear how a regular person uses it, so I thought I'd make a demo. It always annoys me when I can't find any audio examples from people who use the product, so hopefully this helps others. Thanks for watching. If anyone else has made something, they should post it too.

Going back to my topic earlier about learning symphonic principles...  I'm a member of Groove 3 and they have an excellent 12 part  video series that covers Garritan Personal and Instant orchestra v 4, which is very similar to 5, but the vids go into great detail explaining the Aria Player and tweaking it.  Now when I finish watching these i can put something together...

Hope you won't mind if I jump in here?
Mack
Sidroe,
Thanks for your help. Restarting my computer removed the not responding message. I guess my question is:
Do the GPO5 extracted files have to be on the C drive or can they remain on the F drive and I still install the GPO5 program on the C Main drive?
Thanks

I've done some fairly extensive research comparing GPO4 to GPO5. Here are my findings to date.
So far as I can tell ALL of the original GPO4 samples are contained within the GPO5 sample libraries.
In the GPO5 sample library list below, you'll see a numbered set of sample libraries which exactly matches the library set in GPO4. All the unnumbered libraries are the new ones. N.B. No new woodwinds.

However, that is not to say that ALL the old samples are available as instruments via ARIA.
I've found one or two missing so far. But most are there.

Detailed (but incomplete to date) examination of the XML code files (in Banks and GUI folders) and of the SFZ files (in Instruments) have revealed that not all the GPO4 instruments can be accessed. And, strangely, neither can ALL of the new instruments, there are still  a few that aren't finished yet it seems.

The size of the new libraries FAR outweighs that of the old.
It's true to say that the majority of the new instruments I've looked at, to date, have multiple, stereo samples per note, between two and four I'd say (hence "sonic morphing"), whereas I don't think this occurred at all with the old GPO4 samples. These older samples haven't been upgraded so far as I'm aware.

The ARIA player has been updated with several new convolution reverbs added and two new controls.

Haven't been to the forums in a while, so apologies for jumping in.
If you have any techie questions about GPO5 please ask.
I can read and write (a bit) in XML and SFZ code.

Regards,
John.

I'm finding the samples on the softer side, smother edges, that kind of thing. Which is good, mostly. but I'm having to rework things a bit as I redo a piece from 10 years ago. The flute is not as crisp, for example, and I have to make some adjustments to get it sound the way I want it to. But on the whole there is no doubt it's an improvement. For a first time user, this has to be a God-send. As was the first GPO. Will it solve all my needs? No, but it's well worth the 49.00 I spent on it. Until the day I bite the bullet and decide to really shell out some serious cash. But I'm still learning how to do this mixing thing, and until I get better at it, GPO and EWSO Gold are good enough.

Hi Michael,

Strange!

I must do some more extensive testing then. ...

The samples are definitely identical.
I've loaded several into Audacity (File, Import, RAW data ...) and there's absolutely no difference whatsoever.
The only conclusion that I can come to is that their playback is being altered in some way ...
Aha! There's a new sfz file called "Flute Legato.sfz" that wasn't there before. That might change playback.
...
But I can't see it being called from the master xml file nor from within the normal flute sfz files.
Maybe the change is within the ARIA player?

Trundles off to study code.

Regards,
John.

Leave my "trundling" to my own devices, if you please! Although I do appreciate the 'heads up!' ;-)
The outer planet of the Betelgeusean system is only a temporary home (since roughly Ptolemaic times), whilst I arrange alternative accommodation near Procyon.
To be honest, I'm getting fed up with the colour red after a couple of millennia, and I need a little more energy to power the transporter. I fear the drain will send things supernova in the very near future.

Aha! The coffee's ready.
That's why I came originally. The coffee's outstanding here.

I see that you have your own set of explosive problems, Fleer.
I sincerely hope that they don't get worse.

That's the Pagan Discount Code I was referring to Fleer.
The very word "Easter" is Pagan, coming from the Pagan
Goddess Eastre/Oestre/ Astarte, who was the Goddess of
Fertility.  This day celebrated is not "Christian", it is Pagan,
and always has been.  They merely "attached" his name
to it.  It's just that people don't know their history, and believe
whatever they are told by that man in the Pulpit...

Not sure it's a good idea, Fleer.

Just been to the site again and it's SO busy (or faulty) I can't get in.

Maybe wait until Monday?

"You da man"? Now just what on earth does that mean?
A bit long in the tooth for that, old bean, at the tender age of 70.
It's remotely possible, but highly unlikely, that I might have been "da man" 50 years ago, but now?
Nah!

Well, the cat's out of the bag, as it were, so I might as well post it here.
GPO5.01 is out.
Login as usual and you'll find your original GPO5 download.
Only it isn't, it's 5.01 masquerading as 5.
Yup, you'll have to download all four and a half gig of it.
The most obvious update is ARIA player up from 1.860 to 1.872 and the engine to match.
Been through all the GUI's and all the sfz file dates and can't find any changes.
The highest dates are typically mid to late January. Can't see anything newer than that.
Don't think I missed anything.
Can't tell whether any samples have been updated, because the update date is the unpack date.
Seems a huge download just for a player update.

While it is admirable for MakeMusic to get out an update quickly, they as a company are not good at informing their customers what is going on. They should be sending emails out to all registered customers informing them of the update (with instructions of how to update.). A big alert should be posted on their forum page. Yes, they do have a blog, Facebook and Twitter page, but they don't appear to carry the same information.

John, 70? You da man for sure. I'm getting there soon enough, 50-ish now, so do wait up for me.
As for Garritan, I tip my hat to you. You really da man in their forum and at NS too, knowledgeable and quite helpful. Great skills and eye for detail.
Still, this update is very fresh, which is why Garritan probably hasn't communicated yet. Also, like Mack I'm hoping there will be a point update without having to download the whole shevardnadze.

Been doing some testing and found out that the mods they say are in the update ain't there, as far as I can see.

In the blog they say that the stereo stage has been inserted for all new brass instruments:
http://www.garritan.com/b...ra-5-made-even-better/
Only I can't see them, and I'm sure I'm not going THAT blind or daft (well, maybe the latter).
Filled in a bug report asking where the updates are.

Just realised, the blog was posted yesterday, and yesterday was?
You got it, All Fools Day.

70? Well actually a little poetic licence. 69 with a birthday in some months.
Wait up? Sorry, no can do. I seem to be in some kinda rush to get to 80.
Don't know why.

"Quite helpful"? only "quite" helpful?
I'm the life and soul of the party, man!
Always bending over backwards to contribute.

Eye for detail? Apprentice at BAC contributing to building VC-10s and BAC1-11s from '64. Very strict on detail.
Started programming in assembler in 1967. RCA301 mainframe.
20 years with ICL.
Finished my career writing and delivering technical courses for Inmarsat on SatComms.
Maybe that's it?

Yup, with GPO5.01 I'd wait a while until they get their knickers out of a twist.
Don't know how much time I wasted yesterday pratting around with this "update".

If all they're doing is changing the GUI and how the samples are played, why can't they save us the time, and them the bandwidth, and just post the Windows or Mac update program. That has all the xml and sfz embedded within it.

I complained of this exact point to their rep at another forum.  If I hadn't seen that thread, I wouldn't have known about the update.  I found the update announcement on their blog page.  Nice, if you're subscribed, but who knew to subscribe to their blog?  (Of course, I am now).

Also, I suggested they put the file version on their download page.  As it is now, all you know is your downloading GPO 5.
