Gimme Gimme Yum Yum!

I was bemoaning to friends (yet again!) that I was unable to eat Lemon Meringue Pie (diabetes) and often dreamt about it. No doubt to shut me up (!) I was challenged to write a song about it. Another friend told me my music was OKish but needed to Rock more! Hmmmmm! I rearranged a piece I had written awhile ago (noone like it then and I agreed with them!), added vocals (Vocaloid Miriam) and this is the result. Instrumentation is totally by notation in Staff View - what a lot of notes!

Just a bit of fun and I hope it makes you smile! Now I shall go back to my usual genre!

This is cool... sounds like Miriam needs to have some of her words starting just before the beat but apart from that this was really enjoyable.

And, the sentiment "We want pie" is one I can relate to...

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Hi Mike - sincere thanks and so pleased you like it. Trying to 'fill' the sound and make it sound at least a bit realistic just using VSTs was a bit of a challenge! Celtic folk music is so much easier! Best Regards Malcolm

Hi Terry - Sincere thanks and so pleased you like it. You are right about the vocals - I think I just reached a point when I was pining so much for a lilting flute that I wrapped the piece as it was! As for Pie - my next door neighbour made me a sugar-free lemon meringue pie - it was vile but I ate it anyway! Almost put me off pie for life. Almost! Best Regards Malcolm

This is the coolest song ever about a pie. This should be Granny Smith's theme song. Way to go.

I love this Malcomb. Really cool.
But, yea, you gotta get the timing right on the vocs.
A little trick that might work is to sing it yourself (without the girl) and then match up the girl wavs to your wavs (visually).
    Love this:)

Hi timidi - very many thanks and so very pleased you like it. Good advice for which I am grateful and I will give it a go - mind you, there is no chance that any girl could put up with being in the same room as me when I sing! And as for matching up our waves, that definitely sounds fun - I just wish I was young enough to enjoy it!

But that doesn't mean I can't Rock with those of the younger inclination - I just do it slower - and with regular breaks for a cup of tea and a snooze! Best Regards, Malcolm.

Hi Larry - Sincere thanks - surprised me too! It is just a bit outside my usual musical comfort zone! As for Tribal, I know what you mean - but we Celts love nothing more than giving our kilts a good swirl (!) although I'm not entirely certain my toes would survive doing the Sword dance to this!

Hi Beagle - Sincere thanks - I really must work on that vocals problem although I suspect it will be quite a while before I get the urge to write anything in this genre again! No doubt the World is grateful!

Hi Mark - Sincere thanks - being cool is a very new experience for me! Wow!

I am listening to this for third straight time. A video MUST be produced for this recording.

How did you get Vocaloid to work with Sonar?

I have Sonar Producer 7/Win XP Pro and I'm afraid to download it because it says it's not compaitble with Cakewalk (???)

Hi Kiki - Sincere thanks and so very pleased you like this bit of fun! I have been mulling over the idea of doing a video for it but have been working on a new Celtic Folk piece for an Eisteddfod - now that is finished, I may well have a go at the video. (this is my new piece for the Eisteddfod - The Quickening - Imbolc is the Celtic festival on 1st February celebrating the first stirrings of Spring):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S18vU0NMyiI
As for Vocaloid with Sonar / Cakewalk, you are right that it is difficult if not impossible to get one to work in sync with the other. So I write the vocals and the music in Sonar staff view (I write all my music by notation so all the instruments you hear are VSTs and use EWQL Symphonic Choirs to give me an idea of how the vocals will sound). I then print out the vocals, re-write notes and words in Vocaloid, add expression within Vocaloid, export to a .wav file, import the .wav file to Sonar and then add reverb and more expression using envelopes, EQ and so forth. A bit convoluted, but it works!

    Best Regards
    Malcolm.

Hi Janet - Sincere thanks and so very pleased you like this bit of fun. Yes, all the instruments are VSTs and the vocals are Vocaloid Miriam which is also a VST. The two Rhythm Guitars are both "Independence Free" (a free VST with a wide range of instruments), the two lead guitars are both a VST called "Music Labs Real LPC (Les Paul Custom) and the Bass Guitar is "Studio Instruments" that came free with Home Studio. The Drums and Keyboard are both "Studio Instruments". The Rhythm guitars were a particular problem as the only way of getting the strum sound of six strings was to write each note for each individual strum - so using quavers, each bar could have up to 48 notes to write! Bless the person who invented copy and paste!
