Give me a Chance (remix)
Some of you may remember this older tune from 2009. I recently remixed and changed a few tracks in and out.... no fiddle or steel.... replaced them with dobro and piano... adjusted a few levels.... thought I'd post it up here.... http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10977017 It's called Give Me A Chance .... written in 2009 for a crisis pregnancy center to use in their marketing and fundraising activities. Enjoy

Herb, I guess that Lava Lamp is working out well. I listened to this one twice last night on my dog walk. Earbuds, so I can't make to many comments on the mix balance; thought it sounded really good in the buds. I liked the Dobro, nice playing. Was very impressed with the lyrics and how everything tied together really well. I was pleasantly surprised when the solo child entered the song and I thought that was a fitting touch. The lead singers voice was really good and I enjoyed that. When I first punched play, I thought she was a little off in pitch or timing vocally, in the first couple of lines and then she really got in sinc as the song progressed. Because I was fumbling a little with the ear buds; I went back and listened again and then I thought all sounded pretty good. It was probably just me being dragged around by a 85 lb Golden Retriever that was off.

Tony Lynn and Mike.... thanks for the listen. Mike, I think you're probably right about the slight timing issues.... I opted to fix the pitch but left the slight variation in timing there. Pat helped me to write that. It was our second go at a song for the WPC.... the first attempt, we simple threw it out and started again in a different direction and this was the result. It simply goes to show that you should not ever be afraid to trash something completely and start again if the first path isn't working. Thanks

Wasn't around in 09 so I don't know the other version. Give my congats to the vocalist (both of them), it's just the right feel.

Daryl: yeah, the director loved it. The very first time she heard the song, she took off the head phones with a big smile and said "My favorite line is, Children are precious gifts from Him; not choices that we make" So, Yeah, I think they were happy with it. Freddy & Rebel: I really like the dobro too. It had steel and fiddle in it and I really didn't like the sound of them so this was the change up..... plus it was taken more in a piano based direction as well with a new piano track. The acoustic guitars were the driver in the first version and in this one I backed them off and let other things carry the song.

The mix sounds good, although I prefer perhaps a bit more fullness to the sound (say around 250Hz or around there) but then again that might depend on the volume listening to it and or speakers used. But perhaps a bit more low-mids persay perhaps. Well, got to go, sounded good, but now I always wonder if the voice is just a bit loud with the singing sometimes also. ?? I never know I guess. It's your creative personal choice in the end.

Nice tune Herb. Love the concept and lyric. The singer doesn't seem to be able to hit a note but slides/bends into the pitch, very often. (give me a cha-----ance). This really detracted from the song for me.

Like the lead vocal sound in the verse. You were able to smooth out the high end but leave the air. As the song builds, she sounds too trebly like too much high-mids. There is a ringing in her tone from that issue I think. Love the arrangement. The dobro is really nice. The strings could use some lo-mids to give them more body. The song is really nice and I love the lyrics.

Herb, I've been working on a live act all winter, setting up to do some shows... now I have arthritis in my neck and fingers and carpal tunnel in both hands, may have to do some surgery. So my recording has been taking a hit from my physical ills and all the many hours I've put into my act. PT has made things better and I have a bunch of new tunes in the works and a number in the finishing stages. I will post a few soon, I hope. But mostly working on the live solo show and working on my finger picking skills. Having a ton of fun with that. Typing and mousing is hard so I haven't been on because it's been hard to use the computer... still is but it's better. A lot of new faces here, and some of the old ones seem scarce. Daryl

She's not bad? But... On a scale of 1-10 IMO? A 6.5. She could be a 7.5 if she works at it. But it's tough to get from where you are to where you want to be. The mix is great Herb.

Nice one Herb. Don't recall the first one. I thought the vox did seem just a little off at the beginning too but I think it was just me adjusting to her vocals which were pretty good. If you ever get a soundcloud acct. I'll try to share it with more people.

Rim shot: there are a lot of issues with that recording of the vox. Thanks for the comment about smoothed it out but left the air.... that's not always that easy to do and something I pay attention to on every vocal. Robbie: she was just 16... not quite 17 but probably close enough for a Beatles song... She had never done studio recording before singing mostly in choir and in the musical plays she was involved in. Enunciation on those stages is a bit different from the studio. Add to that she was a bit scared but at the same time has a powerful voice. Even backed off a fair distance she overloaded the mic and I didn't catch it until the session was over. (ie: unborn baby's cry) She ended up recording a second song for me and is now, no longer available to record as she is off to college. Starise: thank you. I'm glad you like the song. I do have a cloud acct, but I don't tend to post many songs to it. Old habits with Click.... and it seems to work just fine so I post most of them there.

Hey Herb. Nice job. It's hard enough to write toward a specific purpose, but to tackle this purpose, well, all I can say is Nice Job. I thought about the comment Robbie made. Considering the number of the unborn that might feel the same, I thought yea that would be HEAVY. But, considering the focus, counseling individually, Just the one voice makes sense. A child's voice as a woman's conscience...and, the agony of "choice" for a young woman whose been left alone. Seems the stronger ones are definitely wearing the female bodies. Thanks for tackling the tough stuff. Jim.

Hi Herb, wow pretty heavy topic … yeah , music does have the power to convey messages and plant seeds when words and personal convictions alone can fail. I agree with you regarding the whole not being afraid to trash everything and start over approach in music as people and aspiring artists it is my opinion that there is a constant evolution of growth that happens on many levels whether a person is conscious of the activity of growth of not . it can be very empowering growth experience for a person to embrace the uncertainty of a new musical expression and abandon an older conception of what might of constituted a satisfactory musical expression …. I dug the song overall I didn't get too caught up on every nuance of the singers performance the dobro took things over the top and it was a super nice touch .. you did a great job with this song on many levels Kenny

Listened again? I'm still mixed on my feelings... I like the message? Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying she's a bad singer, just that she has room to grow. the kid part (again) for me, doesn't add to the tune.
