Good Antivirus program to use in conjuction with x1?
Got a new system with x1 installed. Win 7 64bit w/ 8Gb ram, and a 2.27Ghz processor. Any suggestions for a superior antivirus to use on the computer?

I easily recommend ESET's NOD32 (it has both 32bit and 64bit versions). Very small footprint, very transparent, I've never had a single problem with it for years now, even with the auto-update turned on. I would recommend getting only their anti-virus version (includes malware protection) but not their bigger version "Smart Security" as I think that has too much fluff and would cause some burps when used in a DAW. www.eset.com

submarin AVAST free has a gaming mode where you really don´t feel it at all... Just my opinion, of course, but I don't recommend using any of those 'free' antivirus options on a DAW. Over the years I've seen too many reports of problems with those. I would rather trust a company that has something to lose, so to speak.

I also agree. Antivirus can make or break your system very fast. Im not one to trust free code nor am comfortable at any point in time they could put unwanted features (ads spam, and or system monitoring code) since you are just bound to an agreement and not funding in any way. They need to make money somehow, so just be aware!

Avast is actually very good and unintrusive. It's fully upgradable to a paid Pro version as well. I've used it for years with no problems.

Ive run NOD 32 with sonar and with no problems. I know ive said this and allot of others have said this in the past, that antiviruses should be disabled, but in today's world, you do not need to worry about that anymore. PC's are too powerful now and an antivirus program isnt going to mess with Sonar. Cj

I've found Kaspersky to be fine, once it's configured the way I want it. Like all modern AV's it's more than a little bloated out of the box, but isn't too bad to configure. I generally don't bother switching it off to use Sonar - though I have told it to ignore all processes opened by Sonar and not to bother scanning wave files on opening. And to get it's automatic updates at 6.00 a.m. when I'm unlikely to be using Sonar. Overall it seems to make little performance difference to my desktop (quad core) whether it's on or off. It does make the PC noticably slower to boot/log on to though (to the point Vista complains about it on my Core2Duo laptop).

I can vouch for Avast! and NOD32. I hear Kaspersky is good too. I have heard of Norton 360 causing performance troubles, is difficult to de-install, and that it harrasses you to upgrade. N360 is also not free. On my DAW I use Microsoft Security Essentials, along with the Windows firewall; have been using these since January 2010 with no problems. Both are lightweight and unobtrusive. They update by automatically as part of Windows Update. They're free and there's not even a yearly registration process like Avast has. I think with the possible exception of Norton 360, there are definitely good choices.

MS WINDOWS SECURITY ESSENTIALS free from Microsoft, the one and only. Integrates well, can be turned on and off with a single click during operation (like the metronome in most DAWs.) I turn it on when browsing the net. During audio production its turned off.

MS Security Essentials - no measurable impact at all, the virus definitions updates seem to take place at least twice a day, low resource usage, and can be turned on / off easily when disconnected from the internet. I had Kaspersky before which was very good too, however since going Windows 7 with MS including backup and recovery utilities I am saving my annual christmas spend on anti-virus and imaging software by going down the Microsoft route.

As a guy who has been very lucky to experience virtually ZERO crashes or freezes using SONAR , I have always followed the #1 basic rule of Pro Recording Studios .... If you can afford it, your Studio DAW PC should be a dedicated system... 1) No internet access 2) No Antivirus programs 3) Minimal other software applications installed 4) No Windows O/S once you have a rock solid system Any updates or patches can be downloaded and virus scanned on a separate work computer and transferred to the dedicated Audio DAW PC. In other words, your DAW PC is 100% dedicated on recording and nothing else. Use a laptop or other PC for all your web browsing, saving photos, WORD, EXCEL, WI-FI, webcams, graphic utilities, etc..... This is the most sure way of avoiding glitchy conflicts in a DAW environment

Microsoft Security Essentials was rated 8 out of 10 in Maximum PC magazine. That was the highest rating for a free AV program. I've been using it for a while. It works and its relatively transparent unlike Avast and AVG that annoy you with constant reminders to update.

I know money is tight right now but if you got the bucks why not buy a cheap desktop (I've seen some as low as $250) and hook that up to the internet; (get a USB flash drive to transport files if need be) If you have a dedicated DAW, or any computer you need for your livlihood, why hook up to the internet at all. Even if virus software is working for you at this moment, it doesn't mean it will protect you two weeks from now. there are some smart dudes in cyberland that are trying to crack these safe guards as we speak.
