Never heard of him, but 56 is WAAAY too early! That picture of him sure makes him look quite a bit older though...

He was a huge part of British comedy through the '80's and '90's Craig..The New Statesman, The Young Ones, Bottom, Blackadder etc. I was stunned when I heard this on the radio this afternoon. Can't seem to find why he died, unless it was related to the head injuries he sustained in the quad-bike accident back in 1998.

I was aware of Rik on The Young Ones. I'd forgotten that he was on Black Adder. I've seen a few episodes of each one, but I didn't have as much access to British TV as I do now. I wish I'd seen more of both shows. RIP, Rik.

Some highlights for me, aside from The Young Ones and his occasional role as Lord Flashheart: I loved 'Kevin Turvey', (The Comic Strip Presents) 'Bad News on Tour' was inspired, and Rik's portrayal of Alan B'Stard was sheer genius.

Don't think I've ever been more gutted by a celebrity death :(
Mayall and the rest pretty much defined the sense of humor of everyone who was at school when The Young Ones came out.

It just means that you were too young to be interested. If I remember correctly, The Young Ones was on PBS in New York for a short while. I think it was on Sunday night right before or after Monty Python. I never missed MP. While I liked TYO a bit, I wasn't able to see it as often.

The Comic Strip series is also worth a watch. Bad News and More Bad News were basically the English version of Spinal Tap. Mayall's portrayal of Colin the bassist was hilarious.

As well as the 'Bad News' episodes, I reckon Five Go Mad In Dorset and (the quite wonderful) The Strike are up there with the best of British TV comedy. I have the complete DVD boxsets of The Comic Strip Presents and The New Statesman (as well as all of Blackadder), so I reckon a Rik Mayall DVD weekend is well in order. Let's hope the BBC produce a decent tribute for him, and maybe re-run some the great shows he was involved with.

It's funny you know, we're used to hearing when famous people have died, but it always seems a little bit more 'personal' when it's someone you either looked up to, or someone you had somehow identified with. It's hard to explain, but I felt the same way when Joe Strummer died. Similarly with Alex Higgins, Tony Hart, Gerry Anderson, and the wonderful Patrick Moore. In an age when 'being a celebrity' is often just a job description, I often wonder if our kids will remember their 'heroes' in years to come, as I believe my/our generation does. At least everybody on my list (and probably a few others I could have also mentioned) did actually have some real talent and ability.

Yes, RIP Rik, he defined a changing of the old guard in comedy back in the 80's. Put another way, he was original and B****y funny. It seems a bit of an as yet unexplained sudden death... I feel a real sense of loss with his demise...

Came across this video tonight which made me realize just how brilliant Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson were in Bottom. It's from the live show they did of it. The two of them just had an amazing comic chemistry, they have the audience in stitches here. Everything they did together - The Young Ones, Filthy Rich and Catflap, The Dangerous Brothers, Bottom - it was all brilliant. NSFW because of the language! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_X_7TrcHGM

What a sad loss indeed. I was shocked when I head this last night, and I don't shock easily. It's been mentioned that he never really recovered from the Quad bike accident he suffered in 1998, but it's only speculation at this point. Very upset about this - Rik was an absolute hero, and a very funny man as well.

Channel 4's Man Down is the most recent show I watched him in. He played Greg Davis's potty dad in the series, despite only being 10 years older than him. I think Greg mentions in one of his stand-up DVDs that when he first started out, he was often mistaken for Rik's son due to a slight resemblance between the two! Typical Rik, and the part was obviously lovingly and deliberately written for him, if I remember correctly, Davis was one of the writers (warning - 1 use of the 'f' word): Also, I absolutely love this quote from Ade Edmondson: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him... And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard." I'm certain Rik would have approved.
