Greeting from [Update] Kenya or I love chicks w/ Long Necks

Greetings from Amsterdam … actually I am departing tomorrow for Nairobi.  Great city this Amsterdam, went to a hard rock / metal club last night.  It was a throwback to partying in my friend’s basement back in the early to mid-80’s in suburban north NJ or like some of the clubs I used to go to, except the band was from Venezuela ...  I even made a friend, an English gentleman wearing a spiked dog collar.

… took the tourist trail through the red light district.  I always thought the term red-light was some sort of figure of speech but there were actually red lights on the street.  I now have some perspective on Roxanne.

The place is bike crazy, it is actually dangerous if you are oblivious like me.  The trains, cars and bikes are all intersecting each other.  The cars are pretty easy to avoid but the bikes (including motorcycles and scooters) are unpredictable. Well, off to wander the city some more.

Been there (in '81).  Fun place.  We took the Heineken brewery tour (which led to a lot of recovery time afterwards) - heh...  We also did the walk through the red light district (no one partaking) and were constantly told to go to the Milky Way (a hashish bar) but no one did that either...  Oh well!

I certainly wouldn’t go to one of the “coffee” shops like the Bull Dog or Dolphin and even if I did I certainly wouldn’t pay 12 Euros for a “cigarette” … uh … what was I talking about … oh yea, so I was having a rational conversation about the Queen with this guy from England wearing a spiked dog collar (not me, the guy from England) at this hard rock club when I must of said something witty.  He said to me, “oh, I see what you are doing there”, and I cracked because I had this vision of Jonbouy without the dog collar of course.

I did have the best pizza since leaving NJ.

I think I heard that "foreigners" are no longer allowed in those coffee shops as of the first of the year...  Not sure what all the politics behind it are.

Not that I know this through personal experience but they are still letting "foreigners" in.  As a matter of fact I saw Lou Gramm walking into one of the places.

Holland/The Netherlands is a nice country.
The amount of bicycles is directly comparable to the low number of obece people, isn't it? You simply don't see lard balls rolling along the streets, but it's normal to see couples in their 80's having an evening bike tour.
The bicycling is easy in a country where there are no hills. It's the same in Denmark. My friends in northern Greece laughed aloud when we talked about biking. With a quarter mile altitude difference every mile, even more, up and down, sure makes biking impossible.

The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

That is only because I decided not to ride a bicycle while I was here.

On the other hand, people smoke like fiends or at least it seems that way.

Hi Ed ... no strictly recreational while in Amsterdam.  I did bring my Zoom H1 with me and may try to catch some of the sounds of Africa.  Hopefully I will have internet access again in a day or two but signing off for now.  Dave

Have a great trip Dave! Don't wander down any dark side streets...

I lived in Holland for a while back in the '80's, part of that time I was living just 20 Km from Amsterdam. The Zeedijke area was really scary then. Last time I went back it had been cleaned up and and was really nice with good resturants and bars. The Red Light District has been scaled back too.

@Dave - hope you had a good Indonesian meal while you were there.

    Nah, that's not happening now.

They realised just how much the City of Amsterdam relied on the tourism sector to boost the local economy, and that making the coffee shops off-limits to foreigners would not only make a dent in their finances, but could also be construed as illegal, under EU law.

    Phew! Thank dolphins for that!

Fluffy lollipops, yes. The ones you and your bandmates drunkenly shoved into a penguin at Amsterdam Zoo 'back in the day', remember?
