    they came from caves...

which you'll probably guess what they are from that hint - but the 2nd part of the question is:  what did the ancient Mayans use them for???

IIRC they hadn't grasped roller technology for moving large objects like the Egyptians did so IDK. Maybe they are blanks for sculptures? Stones for a solar calendar? The anticipation is killing me!

A good hint would be if they were found stacked like that or if they were moved. If they were found stacked like that was it for storage until they were put to their intended use?

    good suggestion!

when they used them they were NOT stacked like this.  they were spread out and sometimes they'd only use a few of them.  when the archeologists uncovered the top of the pyramid, they found 4 of them (different sizes) lined up side by side.

YES!  they are stalactites/stalagmites!  but the REAL question is what did the Mayans use them for in the city?

Well I pretty much figured they were stalactites after the cave hint but this new hint has me a little perplexed. I don't want to sound cliched but I'm almost thinking some kind of ceremonial purposes. Perhaps even sacrifice rituals... but that's just... yeah, cliche. *ponders more* Gate/fence posts? Naw I don't like that one either.
