I am in no way close to being as versed on this as you guys, but I thought I would add that when I first set up my SHS7 I had major sound problems. I could not get ASIO to work for me I switched to WDM and have not had a problem since.

Win 7 Dell intel Core i3, 2.40 ghz, 6gb RAM, 64bit OS, Sonar X3-Producer, M-Audio Fast Track, Nady SMPS-1X Condensor Mic.

The OP states he can "revert back to Audacity, all is fine" so I wouldn't suspect the signal chain outside the computer.  I'm a bit of a noob to Sonar, but from the pics I don't see the red "Record" button engaged or the blue "Echo" button.  Could that be the issue?

Audicy likes the default audio drivers that come with Windows. Sonar would prefer something a little better. The first thing is the OP has to be sure he is using the drivers for his SB card. Then he can worry about getting a signal.

Thanks guys, I will see what i can do tomorrow, i'm currently in work, so i have been unable to have a go yet. Thanks for all the help and support!

It was originally set for WDM and there were other drivers shown but when i switched it to ASIO, i have been unable to get these drivers, when i get home in the morning i will have a bash at it and see if i can get it sorted. As for the record and echo not being lit, in the pics I wasnt actually using Sonar, just had it up for the screenshots :)

Sam, I want to compliment you on taking the time and effort in making the screen shots. It shows a commitment in trying to figure out the problem. Well done indeed!

I use the pcie version of this card.  This card does have its own drivers (http://support.creative.com/Downloads/searchdownloads.aspx?filename=XFXA_PCDRV_LB_1_04_0000.exe.  On my card these included asio drivers.  If not thses specific drivers should be used and not generic drivers chosen by the OS.

In trying to get back to the WDM other drivers you will have to deselect all instances of the driver for both inputs and outputs in order to see other drivers in the system..

It sounds as if the actual ports that is outputting the sound is not a port shown by the system.  I am thinking that this is a driver situation that needs to be corrected first.  From there we can isolate points of failure.  ie... Without the mixer does the soundcard produce sound. Without the mixer can we connect a mic to the card and get it to record in sonar. if so then we can add the mixer in and see where the issue is.  I think we have to resolve the driver issue first though.

Ok, so it's now 7:25am, I have just got in from a 12hr night shift!!! (God help me!) This is what i have done since coming home and before i go to bed!
I changed the driver from ASIO to WDM, applied that. Once it was applied i was able to gain access to a different driver, not the generic asio. The driver now is the sound blaster driver, progress.....or not it would seem!! Still unable to record. Here is how the config looks now

And Thanks John, I just want to try and get this sorted, so i thought screen shots would help u guys, help me

Re:HELP ME!!!! Cannot record! 2012/03/17 09:46:41 (permalink)
ok, now you have the correct drivers selected. Now look at the track you want to record on. From the screen shots I can see that the input and output of the track has your sound blaster selected, so your good there.
- There is a button with a red circle. That is to arm (record enable) the track. Click it.
- to the right of the arm (record enable) button, there is a button that looks like a dot with right parenthesis (growing from small to large). That is the input echo button. Click that to turn it on. This button allows you to hear what is being recorded on the track.

At this point you will see the meter on the track move when there is audio, and you should hear it as well. Now up on the upper part of the screen there is a large light blue box with numbers in it (the numbers indicate your "now time" in the project). To the left of this is the main transport controls. Click on the button with the red circle (the one closest to the large light blue box) to start recording.

At this point it should start recording. (I hope) :)

Unlike audacity, Sonar is a much more complex recording package. The PDF user manual which comes with Sonar has several tutorials that I would suggest you try, it will give you an in-depth tour of common tasks. It'll keep you from loosing anymore hair. ;)
