Sounds like we've all got similar stories... 12 years of headphones in radio studios, playing in bands, loud parties, all that...
I've pretty much got it all... had a complete hearing eval in December, and I have effectively a 40% hearing loss. When the audiologist showed me the graph of the frequencies I could hear (and how well), the line was stable at about 90% until 3 kHz and then dropped like a stone. The good news is that I responded well to simple amplification, so when I can afford hearing aids, they'll be a less-complicated setup than they are for some.
As for the tinnitus, I learned something interesting during the testing. The audiologist, who does research along with his work with patients, says that the latest research is discovering that the "noises" of tinnitus are very analogous to what's called "missing limb syndrome" - say, if you've lost a leg, your brain still reports "feelings" for something that's no longer there. In the case of the tinnitus, it's as though the brain is attempting to compensate for a lack of input by creating its own noises.
I'm really excited about that because he says that in a percentage of tinnitus patients, after a period of time with the right hearing aids, the tinnitus will turn itself off (so long as you continue using the hearing aids). Now that would be wonderful!
