Help! All I/O has been reset, no audio from Sonar

I cannot track down this problem... I have lost all audio output from Sonar to my Audiobox USB, which is acting as my soundcard... I get audio from other sources, when I play mp3s or stream videos online, or even playing my keyboard... but no output from Sonar. Even on old saved projects where no settings have changed it looks like all the I/O has been reset, my inputs are set to -none- and outputs to Master... any thoughts?

On further thought, it sounds like a preferences issue. Check and see if your audiobox is listed under "devices". Then see if it's checked.

Reset the output where? On every individual track in every song? Or is there some global option I'm missing? And yes, the Audiobox ASIO device and drivers are still selected in my prefs.

I usually just have to reset the output at the bottom of the master buss in the console view.

Check the master outputs, in console view, as said above, and anything else tide to them, if that does not solve...I got the same problems....I think it started with MS updates..but cannot be certain of that.

It seems to be set correctly... also if I create a new track the Audiobox shows up as an option, but no options to choose left channel, right channel or stereo.

Is it grayed out? Is there any other option that shows up?

In MS win control panel under audio/speaker...what is the default sound device selected?

In my operating system sound properties, the Audiobox is chosen and the speakers test out okay. The output on my master is set to the Audiobox as usual.

In Sonar preferences under devices, try disabling everything except for the audiobox (if there is anything).

    Sonar
Pref make sure ASIO or the right driver you want to be used is still selected...might want to not share audio device in that pref page settings...

in MS the default audio has ins and outs also...perhaps something got muddled in that?

I set my default to onboard audio, and leave my other audio device free...and only my software for music uses...which also have in outs in MS audio settings to check and make sure they are correctly set...line out..not phones or spdif..kind thingy....hope it routes out right...if not try reinstalling driver for the audiobox....hope this helps...if the selectable ins and outs do not show, then something ain't right with something...

One other thing to make sure - close all the other programs (iTunes, etc.) including your browser and then open Sonar and see if it will play audio.  Sometimes those other programs will hold your interface for ransom.

Unfortunately, I'm at work, so I'm not able to get into sonar to stir up any more ideas right now.

oh,,if you use the audio usb box as preferred default, you may have inadvertently reset buffers and or bit rates when booting...sounds played are not the same bit rate, the audio card changes to, and locks in on..then you open Sonar project, and nothing plays...because the audio device cannot switch bit rate or buffer size to accommodate the project.
    perhaps?
...that is why I do not use my audio recording device as MS default audio...and I turn off all MS sounds, that play when booting or shutting down, clicks warnings and such...just to make sure!

I'm considering uninstalling and reinstalling the software, if anyone thinks that will help.

if it is a hardware issue, reinstalling will not solve it...open your audio device applet and check to make sure the bit rate and buffers are right for the project you are working on....make sure, then open sonar..see what gives first.

also usb ports, in devices in "device manager"..open each one, and select always on in their preferences.

the Audiobox applet is set normally, and none of the USB devices (which actually aren't in Devices in the Device Manager they're in Universal Serial Bus controllers) don't have a "preferences" or a "always on" option that I can find. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue because all my other audio is fine, I can play my keyboard, listen to mp3s, I get audio through my browser, even other DAWs, just not Sonar. I really appreciate your input but if anyone is out there that is actually at a computer and can help me run this down I'd appreciate that too.

With the X3 and now 2015, opening a web browser nukes the audio in sonar.

So I am still using 8.5.3 to record from the web, and dubbing tapes.

And it is very inconvenient when opening the web-help file.

usb root hubs in device manager under universal serial bus controllers...each hub is a port...sorry for the confusion...properties, one of the tabs has always on...just to make sure, when opening your Sonar, things are not being turned off by windows...to save power...yah power management tab, de select allow computer to turn this off...that one, on all hubs.

Do you have onboard audio chip on the motherboard?..is it enabled in device manager?...try making that your windows default....then try again to play back in Sonar with the usb audiiobox....trouble shot the ghosts is hard, but you gain so much experience on the ons and offs...to get things into bliss...if this does not work for you, try with it as set, and reselect  main outs again in sonar console, and check preferences, try unselecting asio, and reselecting...just to clear any locks windows may have had or other app...then...driver update, still with it not as MS default...if that does not work...then consider reinstall?...or someone else might find something to help...so be patient...baby steps!

I have found Firewire in my setups in past ranglings to make all work impossible to do, to cause much issues with nic cards or chips onboard running, when needing audio and Sonar...yah open up the help, and all is toasted in the project!...but since I moved to thunderbolt 2 interface for my audio desks, on firewire adapter, internet works fine...do not ask me why...I can also turn on wi fi...and it works....just saying through my experience so far...but I do turn off the wi fi any hoot...why test faith and tech when one does not need to pull out any more hair than necessary?....Just saying.

I do have onboard audio but I no longer have that speaker system hooked up... this system has been working for me for a long time and I haven't changed anything so something must have happened within the software... it is clearly something catastrophic, I'm out of ideas.

..note..using onboard device for MS default audio playback...using a cable form onboard audio out, to external ins into external audio device, can be recorded..and play back web content through onboard device, through that cable,..into external device... into your daw with next to no issues, when setup is done to allow it...and there are issues with video HD HDMI audio...so one might want to disable that....wink.

I know you had it working, but as I said MS updates might be behind this...so letting your audio solution be free...might help solve any locking to odd sample rates, or just hogging the device exclusively for MS or other third party player or user installed that does not let go of the driver.....thus your audio goes grey...locked out..or not available to Sonar...but...I think, if you fiddle that out of the varrible, it leads to a reinstall of either latest drivers, then Sonar lastly...because if one does not root it out as hardware, and you just reinstall...it may be it does not solve the problem....Just saying.

Check power settings to make sure the USB item is set to never save power.
Do the same with every USB device in the Device Manager:
start from the bottom: USB Root Hub /  Power Management tab: uncheck and OK

I suggest disconnecting the audio device, power off and pull the plug to discharge all caps.
Power on, at the desktop, connect the audio device and test.

If no joy,  download the latest drivers, uninstall all stuff for the audio device, unplug, shut down and unplug the computer, restart and follow the instructions for installation.

I seem to be back. I uninstalled and reinstalled Sonar, then had to unselect the Audiobox drivers, apply that, and then reselect them... then I got sound again. I hope it holds... thanks guys.

Seems to me, it was the driver being held by MS win or other app not letting it go....So think about making your external usb audiobox not the default play record for windows OS, use the onboard sound for that...might clear you from future lockups?....have fun.
