Isn't the associated Tsunami expected to hit Hawaii and California too?

In UK reports are that it's headed towards the US and will be around 20ft high when it hits land [ a bit smaller than the 10m (33ft) that hit Japan]

Time to know where your scuba gear is!

It took an hour of retries last night to get a call through. The system was simply overwhelmed as local folks tried to contact family all over Asia. Although my place is thousands of miles away, I was a little concerned about my fish pens. No problems there, though. When we finally got through the shock wave had already come and gone and no damage was done.

I am in the Philippines and the Tsunami is causing problems on the eastern coast right now.

Tom, I've traveled around the Philippines on many occasions and I've never seen a road sign to "Kansas USA". Which island is that on?

This disaster is truly epic. I don't even want to think about what the death toll will be. The last time an earthquake approaching this magnitude hit Japan was in 1896, when 27,000 people died.

Anybody here in Washington State will remember vividly our last major earthquake. Ask anyone and they'll be able recount exactly where they were and what they were doing when it hit, even though it happened 10 years ago. (I was watching my driveway undulate like waves on water while my house did a hula dance. Scary stuff.)

But to put this latest one in Japan into perspective for anyone who also happened to have experienced that Nisqually Quake in 2001: it lasted about 45 seconds (longer than average), but this one in Japan lasted almost 3 minutes and was 500 times stronger. No "earthquake-resistant" structure can stand up to that, even with the kinds of the hi-tech measures employed in Japan, the shakiest nation on earth, seismologically-speaking.

We are on Negros Island in the Negros Oriental province. Just west of Cebu Island but on the east side. In this position we are protected from the worst of any storm or wave that can hit. Earthquake is a whole different story. That can get you no matter where you might be. I suppose I should update my location in my profile lol.

Here's a video I shot during one of the aftershocks, I just grabbed my phone and started rolling camera. I had the misfortune of getting a room upgrade and put on a high floor. Normally that would be a really good thing.

    http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=channel_video_title

Worst part for me was the building creaking and groaning as it swayed.

That video is pretty terrifying to me Robin. It went on a long time for an aftershock.

If I'm ever in big earthquake myself I wouldn't want it to be when I'm in a foreign country and stuck in a skyscraper. Get the hell out of there man!!!
