HotFix Build 255 now available!!!

Whoohoo!!!

http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2274862

Issues addressed in QuickFix Build 255:
  • CWBRN-5254, 5236, 5215, 5311, 5312: Resolved an issue where when selecting MIDI inputs would not select the correct port in certain situations
  • CWBRN-4455: In the Staff View, the correct note duration is now entered when using the note duration shortcuts to switch between values.
  • CWBRN-4037, 4390: Resolved an issue where Track Interleave settings would change when toggling Input Echo or opening a project containing echoed tracks.
  • CWBRN-5210, 5296: Some audio devices which change the number of inputs and outputs based on the selected sample rate would require a restart of the application before they would work when a project at different the sample rate was loaded. SONAR now detects and dynamically changes the number of ports in response to sample rate changes.
  • CWBRN-5294: Resolved an issue where hiding the ProChannel module in the Console View would not hide the ProChannel GUI if shown/expanded.
  • CWBRN-4046, 5295: The context menu for inserting a Send from the Track Inspector now displays correctly when inserting a second send.
  • CWBRN-4047: Resolved an issue where dragging plug-ins from the plug-in browser could crash or hang SONAR under rare circumstances.
Can someone verify if the staff view duration issue is resolved for the Tool HUD as well as the keyboard shortcuts?

"In an effort to provide these fixes as quickly as possible, this QuickFix has received less testing than a standard patch and is recommended only for users experiencing one of the issues that have been addressed."

So when can we regard quick fixes as tested and out of Beta?
I can't apply 246 (and therefore any others as they're cumulative) because it causes non-destructve fades to mute clips under the fade curves, and Process/Audio/Gain to only work on a left channel whilst muting the right. (Both reported, awaiting response.)

We investigated the fade issue with your project and were unable to reproduce on multiple systems. I believe that you are having a problem but there is something missing from your recipe. Perhaps if you try and get some other users to reproduce the same issue we'll get to the bottom of it quicker...

Can you elaborate a bit for us here and have you reported them via the problem reporter?

Noel. I've seen just three reports of this on the forum, two from U.K. users, and one from a user in Germany running English language SONAR on a German version of Windows. Any chance this is language/region-specific?

Also, the user in Germany, "native", reported this before the first Quickfix was released, so whatever it is was already present in the original build of X1b if not earlier.

Unlikely since the engine code is language agnostic. But of course side effects of OS specifific settings can cause problems othes dont see. We need some concrete recipe's for this one to make further progress. Do you see it?

    No I can't reproduce it either,and I don't think any U.S.-based forum member has.

brundlefly, many thanks for interceding and trying to help.

I've now re-installed Sonar X1 for a third time and I still I get these two particular problems (non-destructive fade mutes audio inside the curve; Process/Audio/Gain works on the L and mutes the R signal)

I can't do anymore to report the 'recipe' - apart from install Sonar X1, then the updates and it happens.

At the risk of being a bore, can you check for this bug on pre-Sonar X1 projects for me?  i.e. open an 8.5.3. project not opened before in X1 and see if my bugs appear?  Every now and then the bugs don't appear for me if I record new audio (but without QF 246 instralled).

    Thanks again,
    John

Sorry Ian - we try our best to balance and address the issues that impact the widest range of users.  We are still looking into your issue, at this time its still not 100% clear if its an ReFX Nexus issue or not since removing that plugin or freezing it prevents the issue.  As always once we know more and have made some progress good or bad you'll be notified.

Thank you for your continued support.

I belive it is a memory issue.
I can use V-Vocal in projects of circa 2GB with Nexus unfrozen.

however in projects of around 6GB I have to freeze to get V-Vocal to work...

perhaps it's something to do with V-Vocal (or bitbridge) and high (>4GB) RAM usage?

    Glad to help, John.

Clip fades and Process > Apply Effect > Gain (submenu name changed in X1) work both with new projects created from X1's Normal template, and with old 8.5.3 projects opened in X1.

When you reinstall, are you wiping out the Appdata folder and Registry entries for SONAR? If not, it may continue to inherit AUD.INI and other settings from the previous install that could have a bearing.

Rather than reinstalling again, I would suggest renaming AUD.INI, and letting SONAR create a new one with default settings.

It's a long shot, but if it's not a platform-specific issue (which is the way I'm leaning) it would have to be a config setting of some sort.

Do you have another machine you can install on for comparison?

    Thanks brundlfly, much appreciated.
I do have another machine, my i7 4 core which runs X1 without these two bugs.  I even copied the AUDI.INI and SONARPDR.EXE files onto a stick and put them on my new Sandy Bridge PC.  Today, I also tried:
    - Swapping the Delta 66 interface from my old machine over to the new one in place of the Saffire Pro 14 I bought for it.
    - Starting the machine in Windows Safe Mode as well as
    - Temporarily renaming the plugins folders so Sonar would start without anything that could possibly interfere with it.
    ...  All to no avail...

The last ditch now is to do a completely clean reinstall of Windows 7 followed by a Sonar X1 install.  It doesn't come sparser than that.  If that doesn't work there is a dreadful explanation awaiting - a fault in Intel's brand new Sandy Bridge processor (in addition to the one they found in January that cost them $0.75bn).  I've never been an 'early adopter' before and after this experience with Sandy Bridge I will NEVER venture to the bleeding edge again!

Ya know... when I first saw that, I was having thoughts about the "double-edged sword of the bleeding edge", but I try not to fault hardware before there is just cause, and I kind of forgot about it until you mentioned it. Could be a factor.

Interesting. Can you verify that this is only happening on a SandyBridge machine? We do have some Intel specific AVX optimizations. Perhaps there is something that is specific to this processor alone that causes this issue. Can you please send us the full system info for the problem machine in question - including which specific CPU you have (including the SKU if possible). This might help us isolate the issue.
Also are you running Windows 7 SP1? That is the version that has the AVX optimizations enabled so SONAR will start using it only if SP1 is installed.

Update: We tested this scenario using 2 different Sandy Bridge systems and were unable to reproduce it. We also tried it on another machine running German Windows 7 and it was fine. So I'm not sure what to make of it. Its remotely possible that it is somehow Sandybridge (AVX) optimization related. PM me your email addess and I can try and send you a build which has no AVX optimizations to try and rule out this issue.

Many thanks Noel for your trouble.
I'll reply to your PM with the info requested.  As you can see, I'm in the last chance saloon now, planning later today to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and then only Sonar.  I'd be happy to try anything before that!  Both machines have exactly the same setup in terms of OS, Sonar X1 64 bit and apps (GuitarRig, Halion Sonic, etc., etc).

    Regards
    John

PS: I don't know whether this could help with a diagnosis, but yesterday whilst randomly trying things, I thought I'd found a way of forcing the correct behaviour.  If I highlight the clip, go into Inspector/Clip/Groove Clip, and click the little 'Stretch to Tempo' box, the envelope behaves as it should.  This isn't a cure or even a workaround of course because I don't want to have to remember to do this whenever I want a non-destructive fade.  However, the biggest problem with this is that a tempo change wreaks havoc: if I put in a tempo change (before or after the curve) there is a big audio 'click' and the audio stops, although the meters show activity.  Just thought it might give a clue!

No need for a clean install of Windows. If it only happens on your AVX box there is a high chance that SONAR's AVX optimizations are somehow not working on your AVX chipset since it appears to be fine with our AVX machines. I will send you a build with a ini variable override for AVX support shortly. If that does indeed help, we'll work with Intel to get to the bottom of this. As mentioned earlier we worked with Intel on specific AVX support for Sandy Bridge for X1. These optimizations were tested on the Sandybridge machines we have but these were earlier pre release models so perhaps something changed. Anyway its only speculation on my part until we analyze this further.

Can you please make a minimal bundle file which exhibits this problem in case its data related. i.e make a new clean project with one track and just a single clip with a fade on it. Then make sure you can repro your problem with that file before sending it to me.

Also you didn't respond to my question whether you had installed Windows 7 service pack 1. If you have a Sandybridge system its essential to install service pack 1 for the AVX optimizations to work.

Hi Noel, yes I mentioned it in my PM when I sent my email address to you, Windows Home Premium 64 bit SP1 (installed by the vendor, DARC).
Thanks for the email and attachment, I'll report back.  And thanks again for this above and beyond service.
