Yeah, this would be a great idea, to my mind... Select a track, or even tracks, and then hold down shift (or whatever) and use the up and down key to move a track, or tracks up and down.

I think I want a keyboard with a little joystick and click KEYS instead of buttons... and a scroll wheel... and a pony*.

Well with apps like excel or word I almost never use a mouse. It hugely speeds up workflow. There should be shortcut keys for moving and other similar functionality (there is some but it's not comprehensive or that intuitive IMHO). I should be able to cut and paste tracks too (old stylie).

Sonar gets a little too complex for that methinks and as much as I too would like full control via keyboard coding it in such a way would be detrimental to the workflow of the Skylight paradigm.

That's why hardware/HID solutions would be more appealing to me. Between my trackball and the keyboard I fly around quite well (and I think the TB is why I maybe have a better experience than some... mice suck for this type of work). Thing is I do insane amounts of tracking and when I do I rely heavily on keyboard commands to start/stop things. As soon as I have to reach out and grab the trackball to do whatever it breaks the creative flow. That's why if I had a little joystick on the right side for nav and some keys on the left side for left/right "clicking" I would be in heaven.

Maybe I should contact Gibson/Craig and develop the ultimate DAW/tracking/editing keyboard.

F*ck control surfaces. I want a fancy WIRED keyboard (that maybe has the option of being wireless for remote control but I hate recharging crap/sending unnecessary signals throught the air or installing stupid drivers).

I was just about to suggest a control surface. Haha!
The V-Studio 700 was a pretty attractive piece of hardware to me. Seems like it was just a one-off and is now discontinued. (sigh...)

It was a Roland product. I believe they still support it in the sense that you can get it repaired and the drivers are current, but it is no longer manufactured.

My guess is that we'll see fewer and fewer hardware control surfaces as touch becomes more common, whether on the computer itself or via something like an iPad app.

Well, it depends on the mouse. My mouse has a total of 10 buttons (including the left/right-click buttons) and two mouse wheels (vertical and horizontal). In this case, a combination of a keyboard and a mouse achieves things the fastest, whether in Excel or a DAW.

A mouse with ten+ buttons is not a mouse, it's a mouse with a built in keyboard .
I challenge anybody to a duel on Excel and a mouse, I will beat you in speed on a bog standard keyboard ! :).
After all Sonar is just a music spreadsheet right? (OK here come the comments LOL!)...

Well, technically a keyboard needs to be a board with keys lined up on it. There are mouses that have buttons neatly lined up on the side of it and I agree they are built-in keyboards (which I don't think are particularly easy to use). But I wouldn't call this mouse I use a mouse with a built-in keyboard. The buttons are spread across the mouse and they are at perfect positions for my hand.
