How Does One Move Tracks Up/Down In SONAR? [SOLVED]

How? Enlighten me.

Answer: Click and hold the small header icon between the track number and name. You won't see the arrow until you start moving up or down.

Put your mouse in the empty area to above and a tad left of the fx bin. You should see a little up/down arrow. Grab it and drag, eventually the new spot will show some blue and that's where it will land. I do it all the time.

PS - I usually move one spot at a time due to screen size limitations.

Re: How Does One Move Tracks Up/Down In SONAR? 2015/07/14 12:24:42 (permalink)
This is one thing that ticks me off to this day.

The answer is indeed look for some blank space in the Track Pane/Track Controls area of the track you want to move until you get the little up/down arrow cursor...

BUT instead being able to hover over any old blank area you kind of have to hunt around because, at least on my install, the grab points are very tiny and it can be a real pain in the butt to get the cursor to change... especially if you don't have the tracks dragged out vertically very far. Same goes for take lanes.

IDK... lots of context sensitive cursor stuff in Sonar is like that I find. Especially in the Clips Pane with the Smart Tool engaged but the whole "Move Track cursor" in the Track Pane is a totally different issue.

Meh...

Just hover around until you get the up/down arrow then drag. I find it usually shows up closer to the MSR buttons (Mute Solo Record) right around their edges. Helps to drag out the track border vertically so you have more area to hunt around.

Cheers.

There are a zillion places to click so you can drag. The main track icon makes a good target; if it's not showing the space to the right and left of the little track icon works, the space to the left of the track number, the space above the upper left of the FX bin, etc.

I just make that part of the track view a bit wider and then there'r plenty of space to the right (X2)

If it's simply a matter of hooking into the icon area... well then I'm an idiot and I'll check this out in a minute. So far though it seems rather random but my fear of activating/angering the icon demons may have kept me from discovering this... in which case I really am an idiot. Doing something else at the moment so I'll report back.

BTW if you alt-click on the Track View track icon it transports you magically to the track icon folder - you don't need to do the right-click + context menu thang.

I hope you guys can forgive me - I respect and appreciate the efforts you put in on the forums - but I was already aware that re-arranging tracks in SONAR, TO THIS DAY, is actually a hunting game I like to call 'Hidden Arrows'. Just had to be a "bee-atch" about it a little after trying out "the new SONAR".

I can't believe I have to deal with the same annoyances in every new release of SONAR... But thanks anyway, guys!

Create the tracks where you want them. Like excel and just about every other software application since man first sequenced the bit, in the area you want the track right click and create the track. If  in fact you want to rearrange, which we always do, then you have to find a handle and drag as they say.

The Track Icon actually seems like the best spot but that's if your track is expanded... Collapse the tracks and you're back in the labyrinth!

Re: How Does One Move Tracks Up/Down In SONAR? 2015/07/14 14:52:55 (permalink)
After doing some work related stuff using this "new" found knowledge... yeah, it's still not ideal. If the Large icon disappears due to the track being too vertically small it becomes a bugger to drag them again. It would be nice if the SMALL icons did the same thing.

However if the tracks aren't COMPLETELY minimized vertically yet the large icon is hidden if you hover around approximately where the large icon WOULD appear them you can reliably get the up/down drag arrows.

As far as my embarrassing story...

nope... it would take a while to explain anyway and I gotta get some other stuff done.

Maybe later.

When a track is collapsed, the small icon takes up the full vertical height. You can't make a track hot spot any larger than the size of the track itself. Short of SONAR psychically divining when you want to move tracks, it seems there are plenty of easy options. If you're in a major track moving mode, there's always auto-zoom.

It would be better if the track name field was one of the hot spots (hovering the mouse cursor over it shouldn't show the little up/down arrow, though - it should just continue to show the pop-up for viewing the entire track name).

Cakewalk should be proud because we must be runing out of things to complain about. I have never had any trouble moving tracks - just grab the icon and drag whether it is big or small!

No...wait....I want tracks that know they need to be moved before I do and move themselves:)

I'll try again later but I had litarally just attempted to drag from the small icon on a collapsed track just before posting that to see if it would move (considering the large icon drag worked). I had to drag the track out a little to hook into the hotspot where the large icon is.

The gap between the track number and the track name field is also "safe".  I would like it if the track number itself were draggable though.  At least you can do it relatively painlessly and without too much weird stuff happening (unlike some software...I'm looking at you, Excel!).

The track number area is designed so you can drag across multiple tracks to select them so that'd be a no go.

This I did not know and would actually be a better system for me in many cases... as long as it doesn't screw up folder placement (like inadvertantly remove them unless you drag them PAST the conceptual folder barrier.

AHA!! The trick to making this work is not waiting for the cursor to change (which is what I've always done because just clicking in the track area does different stuff).

And even after you click on the small icon the cursor doesn't change. You have to click, hold THEN drag. Then and ONLY then will the cursor change.

I can understand why that would seem automatic to those used to it because it's probably an ingrained workflow. The fact that the cursor changes to the up/down drag arrows in certain areas just by hovering confuses fartnoodles such as myself into thinking the cursor must change FIRST before the option is available.

Simple enough now that I know it's there (and thank you for forcing me to explore it, Craig... this will make things easier) but this really is almost Easter Egg level procedure. Quite happy to know about it though. I hate Auto Track Zoom due to my high track counts so when I would do massive project cleanup/reorganizations I would have to drag out every bloody track, find the hover hotspot, do the move, repeat.

Now I can leave stuff minimized and just click and drag.

Cheers.
