How do I create a cutoff envelope in X2?
I've been wondering, how do you create a cutoff envelope in Sonar X2? I have once before, but I have never been able to do it again on any of my tracks. I do know how to assign other types of envelopes, but I need to learn how to do this. I am currently learning to make Dubstep, so it would be very helpful. Filter envelopes are common in all kinds of EDM and Dubstep-type genres, usually on opening synths and drums. Advice would be appreciated :) And by the way, I know that Dubstep is not always "Well liked" by some people, but if anyone could answer that'd be great!

Are you talking about an abrupt stop? That's just a "Jump" type envelope curve and a hand-planted node.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Use the Edit Filter - mouse wheel button, letter "T", or from the Track strip widget - for your synth track of choice and look through its Automation. Somewhere in that list should be your cutoff control(s). That should place a straight-line envelope at the cutoff's current value that you can modify by clicking and dragging where needed. You could also record the actual knob movement on the synth's GUI by enabling the automation Write button on that track.

It is possible to create automation like in StudioOne? In StudioOne if i decide to create automation for cutoff, it create automation in track view. I see it on video for StudioOne, it is helpfull as finding cutoff in menu with 2000 controls for synth.

I'm also struggling with this same topic. I checked the video out but it didn't give the answer. I believe I'm trying to do the same thing as the OP - I have a soft synth and I would like to control its cutoff frequency using Sonar X2's automation. I just cannot figure out how I make an envelope which will control the part of the soft synth that I want it too ... could someone give some step by step instructions? Thanks ...

there is a fair few ways to do it, depending on the source material / if it's a vst synth etc. you could do it in the synth / sampler itself ,via automation IF it has the functionality you want filter wise. even in the old jungle days you could assign the pitchbend to the filtering to mess with filtering etc. of the akai sampler. of via a vst fx.. http://kunz.corrupt.ch/Products/TAL-Filtermight be worth a look for you, as their other fx stuff. things like z3ta can also be used solely for their fx unit, again something you might wanna look into some people even sample their real synth in realtime , while applying the filtering.. then sampling that in to muck about with.. obviously that's not as flexible. there are probably people on DOA (dogs on acid) that will have posted about it, theory wise the sort of effect filtering wise you want is featured on this ?? >> (on the drums) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAWj6B-6jkI it's not a new effect really , just rather well over used in some cases.

You do the same thing as shown in the video, but substitute the parameter you wish to control. EDIT: the video link I posted above doesn't work properly in IE by the way, in Firefox you get a set of three videos, in IE only one :-( Not sure about other browsers. For example, insert soft synth -> Rapture, chose simple instrument track. Choose a patch which uses filter 1 cutoff, e.g. 60's Electro 1 (under sequences) Write a 4-bar note so you can hear the arpeggiated patch playing. Click the Automation Lanes button on the track. The Automation Lane will initially display Volume. Click that and select Rapture-> then navigate to the filter 1 cutoff for element 1. Rapture's parameter list layout isn't exactly intuitive, so it is: Rapture->Decim On/Off 03 - Filter 2 Type 03 -> Filter 1 Cutoff 01 Now that automation lane is set up to control the 01 filter cutoff in the E1 element of Rapture. You can hand-edit the automation information or use write-enable and move the control (in Rapture's UI or via a linked controller). Do as above for any other synth/parameter, the only problem might be locating the right parameter in the parameter list, sometimes they're just given as numbers. What I haven't been able to work out is how to get Sonar to write automation information for an arbitrary synth parameter using 'write enable', if that particular parameter hasn't been pre-selected as an automation lane target. Let's say a synth lists its parameters as '01-99' or something. How do I record the movement of the parameter I wish to control using write enable as a means to identify it if I haven't already selected it? Can this be done? EDIT 2: Ah, this thread holds the answer. It's a bit clunky and limited but does the job more or less: http://forum.cakewalk.com/SONAR-refuses-to-record-automation-m2638267.aspx At the very least it's a means to locate the plugin's parameter in its automation list :-) (I'd still quite like to know whether it's possible to write arbitrary automation data though). Ah, finally twigged it - you have to click the Automation Write Enable button on the synth property page, not the track! So, an alternative answer to the OP's question would be to write-enable automation on the synth's property page and move the desired control (e.g. cutoff) you wish to create an automation track for. This will create some initial automation data. Then hand-edit the data as required. Click the track's 'Automation Lane' button to put the automation data in its own lane for easier editing.

Sorry for delayed reply on this - but thanks ston, using your last message I figured it out. It was that I first has to turn automation lane ON, and then choose from the drop down list the soft synth I wanted to modulate from there. Each soft synth seems to have their own rules how to handle things from there, but thanksfully I figured it out for the 2 I was using.

No problem :-) One caveat worth mentioning (which I think I put into another thread recently) is that if the auto-punch button is enabled, write automation (if you're using that technique) will only operate within the boundaries of the punch region!

Aha, thanks for the tip. I'm not using Write automation - I'm using envelopes, as I find much easier to control what I want with the nodes. Sometime getting the right envelope, that controls the right parameter, that can be more tricky than Midi learn and Write automation though ...

You could also try writing the initial automation from the synth's controls, and then fine-tuning the results using the envelope. Two advantages of this method are A) It can sometimes be quicker to set up the basic "frame" for what the automation needs to be, and B) Since the automation already exists it will be bolded in the Edit Filter's list of available automation.

Hmmm ... sometimes using the W (Write function) I get envelopes with nodes that I can edit, sometimes its more like a graph which I cannot edit with nodes ... I'm not sure how I get the 2 different types ..?
