How do you have one track to do something in another?

I was wondering, how do you have one track to do something in another? For example, let's say every time the snare hits, I want another track to adjust the EQ for .4 seconds and then return back to normal... or lower in volume for a bit altogether. Is there any way to do stuff like that in Sonar? Thanks!

Well you can use a sidechain, that's kind of what they're made for. I forget if the Sonitus EQ is sidechain equipped, I thought only the Gate and the Compressor were, but this a good question.

Also, I think side-chaining was only available in Sonar from 7 onwards

If you can't sidechain what you want, there's always manual envelopes.

If its something like a snare drum........you could also just clone the track>>eq the new track to your taste and mute it... then whenever the hit comes in that you want with the tweaked eq ,mute the original and then unmute the tweaked out track.... or like some have suggested "simple track eq envelope"

Yah but I don't think it's the snare track he wants mucked, but a totally different source. You COULD still use a cloned track with no output as a trigger, but something has to receive the trigger and execute the effect. If Sonitus EQ isn't side-chainable, I think there's a freebie sidechainer you can use to route output like a regular track. Sheesh I should know this stuff...

There are tools that generate envelopes based on peak levels, that can then be moved to another track and assigned to any automatable parameter. Blue Cat's Digital Peak Meter (a free download) can do it.

There is also the Cakewalk Analyst plugin, which can record automation envelopes that can subsequently be assigned to any automatable parameter or be copied to another track. You arm automation recording, click the "Auto" button on Analyst and play the track. Four envelopes will be generated, one for each of four frequency bands.

This feature of Analyst would be extremely cool IF SONAR's envelope editing tools were beefed up. Imagine being able to invert one of these envelopes and use it to control a parametric equalizer in another track. I keep hoping CW will address envelope editing in a future version.

    EDIT:
Upon re-reading your post, I think you can do what you need to do much more simply. Just use the Sonitus Gate plugin's sidechain capability. This assumes you have S7 or above, since sidechaining was not available prior to version 7.

    :-O

Really? Sheesh man you learn something new every day. I agree about the envelope tools tho, nodes and two slopes don't really cut it when you want to get into advanced automation.
