How many guitars do I need?

My wife asked me that question.

All I have is two acoustic (one steel string and one nylon), a Dobro and the Strat I bought new in 1977.  I'm told I need to have it re-fretted but I'd rath just keep it as is and buy a new Strat, like the American Deluxe or something.  Easier to play, less noisy pickups, etc.

Thoughts?

You need another guitar... no doubt.

I always tell my wife it could be worse... I could have a fishing rod jones or stuff like that.

You need 6 guitars to even ask a question like that around here.

The deluxe is a very nice axe.
You may want to check the difference's between the deluxe and the standard to determine if
    it's worth 3 to 4 hundred more.

With a deluxe you get fancy fret markers, locking tuners and....micro tilt neck and..........
Locking tuners are great. Easy upgrade.
I'm tired, I may have missed something but when I started getting them I kinda figured I'd
have at least one Strat in every color lol.

Oh yeah...what's need have to do with it?

I think in general, the Deluxes also come with a nicer hunk of wood as well.

I've suddenly got the opportunity to aquire a Dark Fire.  It's new in a reputable store. I've been watching the price drop over the past few months and today it was offered to me at a price that beats the cheapest I've found on the net by a long way...

...but it is still a lot of money to shell out with no prior warning and I don't know what to do.
I want it, but I don't need it.   But I really want it...

First tell your wife how one more guitar would help you create better music.
Then tell your wife how frustrating it really is because even if you had the guitar you can't really create anything significant without the following.

You need two acoustics, one for standard the other high strung.
    You need a dobro
You need a strat, a tele, a les paul, a les paul junior with P90s and one Gretsch to cover all the sonic colors the competitors use.
    You need a mandolin
    You need a violin
    You need a bass guitar
    You need some harmonicas
You need a percussion set i.e. maracas, shakers, triangle and a COWBELL!
    You need some congas

You need a Fender Deluxe, Princeton and maybe Vibrolux amplifiers
    You need a Marshall combo
You need a B15 Ampeg bass amp
You need a midi controller and a bunch of software synths maybe an old Roland synth module.

Emphasize that you can't really create anything significant without a small studio in your house.
Now go back to the original idea which is the one guitar. It won't sound nearly so bad to her.

Nope, sorry Mike,  Standard will come in Alder, Maple neck, Rosewood fretboard.
I have Deluxes and Standards in both Strats and Tele's.

Ash is not a nicer chunk of wood. It's cheaper to buy but more expensive to use
because it's harder to seal than Alder and that's why they kick the price for it.

And if you want really nice wood you do what I do, build 'em. I really dont' understand
why Fender doesn't offer Strats and Tele's with drop tops.

I firmly believe that you only live once and should have things that you really desire.  Over the last 6 months I went on a splurge and bought most of the guitars and amps I've always wanted.  Only one or two more guitars to go.

Worst case scenario - if you bought your guitars wisely, you will always get your money back or make a profit if you have to sell them.

    Oh yeah, pictures.

What I meant was that in my observation that the actual piece of wood is selected as a better example of that type of wood. I like to look at the wood grain and it just seems, to me, that a transparent finish on a deluxe version seems to reveal a slightly nicer chunk of wood.

The American Deluxe Stratocaster is listed as made of Select Alder... but I think they often used Swamp Ash on the transparent color versions: http://www.fender.com/pro...dels.php?prodNo=011900

Apparently, The American Deluxe Stratocaster Ash is evidently now a unique sku: http://www.fender.com/pro...dels.php?prodNo=011930

I think the used Custom shop stuff is sometimes a good deal... I have bought a few for less than a new Deluxe and they usually have very nice selected wood.

I'm mainly interested in 1 piece bodies so I usually wish Fender would less rather than more pieces of wood.

I'm always on the hunt for a big chunk of straight grained near quarter sawn swamp ash... a grain like that under a amber or butterscotch finish make me drool.

Some of the Gibson Specials with the one piece mahogany bodies get my blood pumping too.

    best regards,
    mike

    A: one more.

My dream list of guitars is what you see in the pic (minus the bass) plus some kind of Chet Atkin's style semi-hollow body, and a Martin Acoustic. I keep telling the wife I want a Martin for my 40th birthday and she always comes back with, "Sure, get a job and you can get one." :)

My point is if you go for a painted Strat you may want to check the price to component difference of a Deluxe to Standard.
If you're seeking a good piece of wood to look at....Fender may not be the company and if it's Ash I've pointed out how
you're more less getting ripped. Ash is cheaper for them to buy and then they raise the price a hundred dollars for it, only because
of the hassle to finish it.

"Select" to Fender doesn't mean squat in my opinion. I have a sunburst Deluxe Strat that you can see where the three piece body
joins and to top it off it's an Anniversary edition. My other Anniversary editions are painted and one can still see the joinery.

If abolone fret dots, locking tuners, micro tilt is worth the price difference to you...good. But I believe that is all the difference there is.
And if you want to tack on another 100 so you can see some ash...that's cool too.
And the cheaper Ash being superior to Alder as a tonewood? If that were true it would cost a lot more than Alder. Fender is definitely
making money when a customer wants Ash. That's a good thing.....for them.

In the end it's what's you want...if it is a Deluxe one may want to know what they're paying for. I did when I bought mine for what it's worth.

Just the way I see it Mike, nothing more.
    Regards,
    Michael

A wise man, I think it was Socrates, was once asked "How long should a man's legs be?"  To which he replied "Just long enough to reach the ground.

I think that is a fair answer for your question as well.  Start with the room with the highest ceiling that you can find.  Attach the first guitar (in a case of course) to the ceiling, laying flat against it.  Attach the next guitar to the first guitar.  And so on.

When you finally reach the ground, you are done.

I recommend a cathedral.  Something with large arched spaces.

Myself, I have about 45 guitars, last I counted, if you include my one mandolin and one banjo and two basses.

The way I see it, every man needs several strats.  A couple Les Pauls.  A tele or two....Rics, a V, Moderne, Explorer matching set.  A couple Gretsches.  Some odd balls like

i own each of these.  these are stock photos.

SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc.  Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad.  2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1.  More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent.  Zendrum!!!
