How many would consider buying an I-Pad if it could do THIS with Sonar X1?

It just seems to get worse with each release since I switched from a different DAW to Sonar at version 7. This overall experience has made me decide to wait on any further upgrades past 8.5. The thing for me is that what I've learned and am able to do with Sonar, I really really love and won't go with another DAW on PC. So, this is a hopeful complaint. One more gripe: The whole "It works on our machines at Cakewalk fine" is not useful to customers.

Thanks,

-D
All I can say is that I'm sorry it appears to get worse with each release for you and I'm sincere in that we take that to heart. X1b is an attempt to hopefully instill some confidence in users such as yourself. I also hope there will be a demo soon so you can try it out for yourself and feel comfortable with upgrading if that is your desire.

Regarding the "it works fine on our machines" not being helpful, I respectfully disagree. I think it is in fact helpful, but let me explain. When something doesn't work for me in software I instantly want to know if it works on another machine or someone else's computer so I know if it can work or if it is just inherently broken on all counts. I think some people misinterpret these comments. They are not mean to dismiss anyone's problem but simply to say that the experience is not across the board and inherent to all user experience. I personally feel this is helpful data and I know I welcome this kind of data when I am simply in the customer's shoes in using other software or devices, etc. If something does for work for me should I not report it after testing it?

Understood. Thanks, for taking the time to listen and respond (on a Sunday even) I've taken enough of your time and you've replied to all of my concerns. I look forward to the demo and an upgrade!

I'm just feeling a bit let down with all the issues for a major release I'm reading about (no I haven't upgraded yet to have any hands on feedback to offer) It just seems to get worse with each release since I switched from a different DAW to Sonar at version 7. This overall experience has made me decide to wait on any further upgrades past 8.5.

While I can understand you being nervous about upgrading because of what you read on the forums, I think it's a huge mistake to not upgrade. With all of the problems with X1, we've already recorded 2 full songs and they both have been the easist and best sounding songs we've made so far. Even with all of the random crashes we get (most when editing midi notes), it's still been worth it to have X1. I think you will eventually upgrade anyway, so you might as well start learning and using it now.

Just my opinion. But my bet is that you will love it.

Yeah, you're right. I went ahead and ordered the upgrade to X1 and grabbed the Rapture upgrade too.

Just to get back on original topic I got the AC-7 core app and an ipad this last week and I can tell you it worked seamlessly, not a hint of latency issues on my wifi I use around the house for internet access, it wasn't even a dedicated wifi router anywhere close to my machines.

With the ipad screen resolution and the way the AC-7 app is programmed I cannot see ever going back to hardware controllers again

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Just curious...are you using AC-7 Core with X1a? I haven't been able to get it to work. The MIDI driver app sees the iPad, SONAR sees the MIDI port and seems to be able to detect when I stop the driver. However, I am not able to get SONAR to communicate with the app on the iPad. After setting up a 'Mackie Control' control surface, it just show's as 'Connecting...' in SONAR.

Try hitting the reset button on the ac7 core prog on the iPad, that's what I had to do, it may take a couple of goes. Once it picks it up it's solid. Works a treat on my system with x1a

Speaking of iPads, Alaska Airlines is currently evaluating iPads for use by pilots. I am not making this up. They'd replace printed navigation info.

They're only evaluating it for now. Personally, I am re-evaluating my choice of favorite airline.

eB,  I don't know if this is the case for you, but when I boot up Sonar with my BCF2000 in Mackie Control mode, it also says "connecting" until I load a project or template.

Brandon,

Not to get personal with you or any Cake employees, but could you guesstimate the ratio of all Cake employess who own an I-Pad to those who don't?

I would really love to know the answer to that. I am still considering buying one.

Hmmm...I really don't know especially as I don'twork in the home office in Boston. I do know that some employees at Cakewalk do certianly own them. There are a few floating around in Sales and Marketing for sure.

I'm personally more interested in the upcoming Android 3 tablets (Motorola etc), but can absolutely see the appeal of iPads (and tablets in general - the iPad being a more mature one) especially when you start seeing these kinds of apps.

I saw Eric Persing demo the iPad controller for Omnisphere at NAMM and it was WAY cool. Really great use for devices of this kind.

Hello Brandon,

Have you connected any external midi controllers to any of the Android Tablets? I have an "Asus Transformer TF101, and I would like to use my M-Audio Axiom Pro 49 with it. I have connected the USB port to the Axiom in Sonar X1 and it syncs right up with no issues, but when I connect it to the Transformer TF101 all I get is the Keyboard just powered up, but does not show that it is connected in the Android taskbar. By the way I am running it with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 ARM CortexA9 processor, with a 32gb hard drive and the attached "keyboard docking station" which comes with 2 USB ports, mini HDMI ports, and a microphone in / audio speaker out port. I have contacted Asus about whether they have USB host support for the TF101, but haven't heard anything positive at this point.  I have read that it should have it. Any way to get this to be a "USB play and play" method between the Axiom Pro 49 and the Asus Transformer TF101? Thank you

As long Apple continue with all its restriction and politics and doesn't add a simple FLASH PLAYER that they can get 100% free from Adobe, NO NEVER!!!

Yes you need to jailbreak the Iphone or Ipad just to get simple functionality? How ****ed isn't that?
I have Iphone now but this year I will ditch it and get an HTC phone instead.

Apple - Products made for people that has very low tech knowledge and understanding how to build, operate computers and systems, technology gadgets and so on.

LOOK----> http://www.htc.com/europe...ct/flyer/overview.html

A Ipad with customization better SCREEN, better Graphic and with FLASH PLAYER that work!!!

Regards
Freddie

Freddie, before you go on spreading such non-sense you should do a bit of research - Adobe themselves dropped flash for web browsing and mobile phones last fall.

You should also know that the alternative is backed not only Apple, but Microsoft and Google.

But I guess you can wipe that information from your brain and resume insulting people using Mac (I included) for being ignorant of all stuff technical.

Rain,

Excatly. Adobe has dropped mobile flash and has about a 1 year or so life span on desktop support. Everything is moving towards htlm5 which the iPad supported all along.

If anything freddie is arguing about old, buggy techinogy that even adobe is replacing.

By the way, if you were to give Sonar and v control pro a run you'd find that you'll be using your mouse and keyboard quite a lot less with a quick access touchscreen. This enhances workflow, makes the iPad have great worth in a modern DAW.

I agree... I have a very high degree of technical knowledge and I do own 2 macs, 2 ipads, an iPhone and an iPod. I also own 4 custom-built (by me) desktop (Windows) machines. I do development and I am a systems engineer. I used to be a Microsoft Certified Trainer, and I install and maintain networks for a living. So, I resent the fact "all mac users are ignorant of all stuff technical"... Hell, I even have a degree in car mechanics (which was a hobby...) :) I will grant you this... I like Windows 7 much more than I like OS X. Especially Lion. And I hate Apple's philosophy. It's my computer, and I use it like I want, not like Apple thinks I should use it.

It's the way of the future. And despite all that can be said against Apple, they once again paved the way (no they didn't invent tablets, but they sure as heck spread the technology w/ an unprecedented efficiency.)

An iPad for remote control certainly is part of the plan for the studio when we get home - we just have to figure out where and when that'll be now.

Sure not the same, but simply dabbling with a few of those apps on the iPhone last summer (TouchOSC and another remote control, I forget which) convinced me of the potential. The less layers between me and what I'm trying to do, the better.

The propoganda around Flash has been fairly interesting; the gap between what Adobe said about it and the reality is pretty wide. Bottom line is this: sure, when the iPhone first appeared, it could be a bit of a drag coming across inaccessible Flash stuff on the web. By the time the iPad was out, it was a done deal, more or less. Almost everything on the web that uses flash video has either fully switched to HTML 5 or has an HTML5 fallback. I can't remember the last time I couldn't access something on the iPad.

My best update was going to w7 64 bit . Then my SSD . I totally agree with Brandon , i'ed never go back.
For me apple products have never failed me been using them since the Power Mac days. The iPad is soild and works way better than my dell laptops with dual cores .. There are tens of thousands of apps. Some that are way cool.
As far as motorola , I was a huge fan . But they have been in some trouble financially closing semi conductor factories all over. They took a wrong turn with IDEN. Which you don't see any more. Sure there making a come back , but the market is already flooded with iPads . And iOS is very mature.

I recently installed TouchDAW on my Android tablet - have not had a chance to try it out, this thread reminded me I have it and wanted to give it a whirl.  Perhaps today I will find the time to see how it works.

Win 7 64bit 8Gig Ram. AMD Athlon 3.2 GHz Sonar X1d Expanded M-Audio Projectmix Roland E-80 VA-7 Arrangers iPad 3 with Neyrinck V-Control Version 1.5.1.6 Hi Psycho.... Maybe you could help me? Here's the problem: Installing the required Ney-Fi was straight forward and my DAW computer immediately showed up as connected to the iPad 3. I now have a very cool remote for Sonar, however it`s only working partially? I can’t make any of the functions respond on the main page: Main transport / BIG / Track and Main Faders? I can select the V-Window and perform edits and parameter changes in any selected Plug-in window. I can edit parameters in the Pro-Channel effects. Also when I select the Desktop view I can see on the iPad 3 whatever DAW window has the focus. If SONARPDR is selected, I can view either of my two monitors and edit parameters, stop, start, etc all seem to function OK. In Mixer view I can Mute / Solo / Arm / and move all faders etc. I get no functionality in Edit View (Scrub / Shuttle etc.)? I have the tried to start Sonar with and without the Projectmix I/O selected under Preferences and there is no difference: Still the same problem. I know this is a brand new application and therefore not much in the way of user experience... Cheers, Shogun I

Im not going to read everyone's post on this, yes it would be nice if Sonar had a dedicated I-Controller app but as the OP already have pointed out AC7 core works great.

Then there is VControl which even has plugin contol and works and looks fantastic.

I think it was Seth or Brandon who have suggested Splashback, which I also have, I think those guys are happy with that as a controller.

What about the Windows 8 tablets coming later this year?

Since Sonar is native to Windows, that would seem to fit. A Sonar controller app on a Windows tablet would be pretty cool I think.

(Although I'm probably only one of the five or six people in the world who is actually looking forward to the Windows 8 tablets.)

Sorry I should I have read more of this thread.

Guys try VControl, best controller app on the market.  I had an android tablet, they are not designed for audio, so i changed to a Ipad best decsion I ever made.

Also I have had no real problems with this forum and my Ipad on my Xoom it was useless.

Peace Ben

In my opinion Windows Tablets will die, unless they become defacto PC's it's about apps and devolpmentent of Apps.

Apple and this pains me has the goods when it comes music apps, plus there are now so many music devices that interface with the Ipad so it's just not feasable any other device will challange the Ipad when it comes musical apps and abilities.

It's the Pro Tools things again, Apple was first and the rest are just trying to catch up, it's taken 10-15 years to see the end of Pro Too's dominance of the market and it will be similar with the Ipad.

Rain

Scott Lee

Rain,

This enhances workflow, makes the iPad have great worth in a modern DAW.

http://www.neyrinck.com/en/products/v-control-pro

It's the way of the future. And despite all that can be said against Apple, they once again paved the way (no they didn't invent tablets, but they sure as heck spread the technology w/ an unprecedented efficiency.)

An iPad for remote control certainly is part of the plan for the studio when we get home - we just have to figure out where and when that'll be now.

Sure not the same, but simply dabbling with a few of those apps on the iPhone last summer (TouchOSC and another remote control, I forget which) convinced me of the potential. The less layers between me and what I'm trying to do, the better.

Rain et al,

I totally agree.  The iPad has been a very interesting addition to the world of electronic gadgets, and some of the unique apps are so, um, unique.

I'm looking forward to checking out Windows 8 tablets too, as well as Windows 8 in general, but I have to say for the first time I'm a little bit more than interested in music software that runs beyond Windows.  And if there are DAW programsss that run on any device these will become of more interest to me.

I hope Sonar can address that in some way.  I know not everyone will agree.  But then not everyone comes to the same conclusion about these things although I feel more would if they got to play with some of the newer devices and apps.

I recorded a little idea on my iPhone with GarageBand and then took it order to my iPad and was able to get quite sophisticated with its development.  I can imagine taking further onto a fully loaded Mac for completion.  That's quite a compelling process for me personally.

Pro Tools didn't get where they are only because the were 1st.  The developed technologies that still no one else has.  Many people still believe that DSP based mixing is more dependable for commercial sessions.  Although this is arguable, it is not arguable that no one has even come close to their dedicated control surfaces.

IMO Windows tablets will be huge since MS (and the rest of the world) is all about touch technology and Apple will likely remain more expensive.  It will, however, take a while for the music apps to catch since, apparently, iPads are the only ones that can currently handle audio well.
