How stable is Sonar X1?
Hi folks I'm running Sonar 8.5 Producer quite stable. Should I upgrade to Sonar X1? How stable is Sonar X1 now? In the beginning this forum was full of threads mentioning problems, etc... Thanks - F.

Really depends who you ask. I've never had it crash. Other people seem to have it crash all the time. On which basis, I would take all responses, whether positive or negative, with a pinch of salt. Best thing would be to download the trial and see how it works out on your particular system.

Worst of all, the other day there was yet another post of people getting 8.5 unstable due to installing X1 on the same machine. Some people got missing midi notes, even on audio exports, not only realtime stuff. This is the core of matters that need attention - not getting what's in the project in the audio - what is that? That really freaked me out. On top of that still people having V-Vocal crashes. They have obviosly ignored this now for I don't know how many years. I ran the X1 Trial recently and really have nothing against the new interface - as I have nothing for the change either. I can learn the new stuff - as long as application is stable. I was sure to run trial on my old daw, not the new one with 8.5 on it. It's not looking good, I'm sorry to say. Something about how Cake is taking on feedback and solving issues people have that is chewing down what trust there is left. Customers waiting 9 month for third(and final) patch for X1. It does not seem like Cake is on top of things.

Hmm. It won't have even been on sale for nine months by the time X1c comes out. Also, there has bee no indication whatsoever that this is the final patch.

So if X1c is 20 aug it's 8.5 month - sorry, for my error. Cake never had more than 3 patches as far as I know, and 9 month until 3rd patch is extraordinary - and is usually small stuff. It's still major stuff people are waiting for as I recall. Waiting so long is building up expectation for everybody to a degree that if X1 is not perfect after that it's really goodbye from many I'm sure.

Ifm, I checked the forum occasionally in the past it's exactly what I broadly remember. I just installed the demo, and I think I will like the new user concept. But it's a nice to have thing and not necessary for making music. Furthermore X1 is to risky to be installed on my main system. I'm not looking for this "missing MIDI note" problem. So I'll wait for X2... No risk - a lot of fun!!!!

In my opinion, and believe me, I had tons of problems with X1 when it was first released, but it seems now to be at least as stable as 8.5.3 - on MY system. But DON'T try to import older projects into X1 and expect them to run normally. They won't. I'm finishing off all my old stuff in 8.5 and using X1 for new projects only.

John is spot on with his comments. I've not had any major issues since the release of X1. There were a few bugs that bothered me before the patches and a few 3rd party plug issues here and there, but it's working perfectly for me now...even with old projects done in 8.5. X1 is definitely a per user/per machine type deal from all that I've been reading on this forum since it came out. Some people use it differently than others where there may be some issues that you may not encounter due to how YOU use it. The same with the system you put it on...some work perfectly, others have legit gripes and issues. Good luck in whatever you decide. -Danny

Coming from someone who has been using Sonar professionally since Sonar 2, I have to say do yourself a favor and wait. X1 has been a nightmare. Inconsistent! Inconsistent! Inconsistent! And the customer support for X1 has been the worse ever. Time frames on update pathches..... awful! Cakewalk showing signs of a downward spiral...I've managed through, but X1 has caused more headache than ANY other Sonar product to date. It's not worth the new features that still aren't stable like the Pro Channel. Audio quantize is still having issues... especially with 64 bit processing on. Plus you cant enable eq on a frozen track like you could in 8.5. Means that once your synths are frozen, to eq them with the built in EQ you have to unfreeze. Sucks! You could still -reenable them as of X1a. (course it never remembered the on or off states when it came back. X1c still doesn't get the pro channel settings right. I've go pro channel stuff from X1 a X1b and X1c that is not working right. Can't depend on pro channel. Set timecode at now is still broken. ( i use for timing jingles) reported it. Nothing! no help from cake! I'll will not purchase another cakewalk upgrade until it's evident that Cakewalk is getting back on track. My studio time is valuable.

Something to bear in mind as this thread no doubt progresses is the correlation between the coherency of the poster and how well they are managing to make their DAW function. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions about that.

Seems a pretty poor showing when people start attacking individuals rather than own up to the fact that X1 is monstrously unstable and very fussy on what it can run. I have used Cakewalk for over 15 years and have had to admit to myself that this is pretty poor at present. Hopefully they can get it sorted but meantime it's back to a previous version or I am seriously considering Jumping ship. You shouldn't have to be a computer technician to run a Music production program on a modern up to date PC!

I'm very sympathetic to this argument, in the sense that "you shouldn't" have to be a computer technician. But the reality is, to some extent, that's currently how it is. You're simply not going to get by all that well on any computer based DAW without being reasonably technically clued in about the platform you're running it. It would be a good thing if this were to change, sure. And I think I'd accept that Sonar is perhaps less friendly than some competing applications in this regard. But we're just not there yet in a general sense.

I think having to go in and park/unpark cores so you don't have CPU spikes is a little much for most people. That sort of thing needs to be fixed. If it can be fixed on the Sonar side it should be addressed immediately. That's just an example of the many murky things that can cause people to jump ship. If I was in customer support that is exactly the sort of thing that would be a priority for me. How about having to disable a floppy drive in CMOS just so screensets don't stare at you until your beard is long enough? Those are valid things that should be hashed out in R&D.

I agree with John here. While it would be very nice to have a DAW that could quite literally "read your mind" the truth is that you have to bring either a modicum of knowledge of the current state of digital recording, mixing and mastering or the willingness to learn. That said, Sonar is quite remarkable for it's ease of use else a dimwit like myself could not manage it at all.

It's not a new problem. You could probably have argued 20 years ago that you shouldn't need to be able to solder stuff and do some basic electrical work to be a sound engineer. But by god, you did.

It amazes me how Cakewalk has confirmed there are problems with the Pro Channel turning on and off by itself, the midi note problem, and a host of other problems I won't re-hash, and yet, people will come on here and say it works perfectly and go out of their way to illegitimatize those who are having problems, again, that Cakewalk has confirmed. Do you folks know something Cakewalk and the rest of us don't? Please enlighten us. The last official response I got on the Pro Channel bug was, "... we hope to have it addressed in a future release.", so I have almost no faith that X1C will resolve any real issues.

I'm very sympathetic to this argument, in the sense that "you shouldn't" have to be a computer technician. But the reality is, to some extent, that's currently how it is. You're simply not going to get by all that well on any computer based DAW without being reasonably technically clued in about the platform you're running it. I can certainly understand the frustration... But I agree that you have to develope some level of technical proficiency. No different than getting up-to-speed with any other studio gear (large format console, etc) or other studio skills (learning mic placement, learning how to effectively mix, etc). Way back in the day, I bought my first PC from a local custom shop. After a few days, it was quite clear there was no one locally that could help install my two Tahiti audio interfaces... and get the system working. If I was serious about recording on a PC, I was going to have to become my own PC DAW tech. Well... I got the two audio interfaces installed/working, but found out QuadStudio was a total train-wreck. So I moved on to the original version of S.A.W. and then on to Cakewalk Pro Audio 4.0. Problem-solving is a major part of working with DAWs, technology in general, and many traditional jobs. The art of mixing could also be likened to problem-solving. Recording/mixing is a challanging technical process. Absorbing, working with, and working around technology IMO will always be a major part of what we do. In a perfect world, this wouldn't be necessary... but we live in an imperfect/messy world. Embrace it warts-and-all... and make the best of what it is. The tools we have today can be frustrating... but they're also capable of amazing results. When I was a kid, I remember spec'ing out complete recording studios (dreaming of one day owning one). I'd get so frustrated... because the tally for a basic hardware based "Project Studio" was the better part of $100,000. We live in an amazing time... (don't get bogged down in frustration with tools) Enough psycho-babble from me...

Problem-solving is a major part of working with DAWs, technology in general, and many traditional jobs. I think one of the most useful things - possibly the most useful thing - I was taught many years ago on a sound engineering course, was the tutor telling us that "sound engineering is about problem solving". His basic position was: assume that weird stuff will happen; assume that you'll have to use unfamiliar gear; assume that stuff will break; assume that you'll always be inventing workarounds; and so on. This of course doesn't mean anyone shouldn't expect the tools they pay for to be as good as possible, or for bugs to be fixed.

Started on Cakewalk 4 myself and had the same issues. I remember phoning my PC manufacturers help line and asking how to get the midi feature they had advertised working and the person on the other end said "...er what is midi?" My point is that the all releases of Sonar I can recall have been generally compatible with all modern pcs , Graphics and sound cards. Except this one. I have worked with it on 3 different machines and they are all having problems. I always liked Cakewalk gear for being the most stable on Pc but I tried and I just had to own up...it is very unreliable in it's present form. I put reaper on on machine that was having a terrible time with X1 and it is running no problem.

If I was experiencing the ProChannel turning on/off while working, I wouldn't be able to use X1. This is not happening on my DAW. You're right to voice your experience... On the flip side, if X1 is working well for another user... is that not also a legitimate experience? I recently mixed a 24-Track 4-hour live recording using X1. If I experienced the issues some report, it would have driven me crazy. No doubt... But that wasn't (isn't) the case. X1 worked very effectively. Note: I wasn't using the ProChannel. I was using volume and send automation. Waves SSL Bundle was used for most of the EQ/Dynamics. TRacks-3 singles were also heavily used (Pultec in particular).

If I am not mistaken the Pro Channel issue is due to opening a project in 32 bit X1 and than in 64 bit X1. Or the other way around. I don't think it is an issue for those of us that stick with one or the other version of X1. I use X1 64 bit only. Now I could be very wrong on this but that is what I understand at present. Also it has be stated that X1 can't open old projects. I have projects dating back to Pro Audio i.e. work files and every project I have opened with X1 has in fact opened.

Plus I like it ALOT better than 8.5, and I started from Pro Audio 9. I do recommend running it on a fairly new system with a clean install of Win7 64bit and as much ram as you can afford.

That's the first I've heard of that, and even if that is the case, that shouldn't happen. I only used the 64bit version of X1 since my last clean install of my entire PC and I've had it happen. The 'official' word I was told is, the problem is due to envelopes on the track that the Pro Channel enabled itself on. The only problem with that is, the project I submitted to tech support didn't have an envelope on one of the tracks it was doing it on. Unfortunately they tagged the problem report as 'no further information needed' and I wasn't able to add additional comments when I pulled the report back up. Also it has be stated that X1 can't open old projects. I have projects dating back to Pro Audio i.e. work files and every project I have opened with X1 has in fact opened. I haven't seen anywhere where it was officially stated that X1 can't open old projects, but actually the opposite. Before it even came out we were told X1 ran 8.5 projects better than 8.5 did ... it was one of the admin, can't remember which one now off the top of my head. It will however corrupt projects started in previous versions, I've had that happen to me. One I lost forever because I hadn't backed it up (my fault). What I started doing was create a duplicate of the project and open that, but I just don't even open old projects in X1 anymore. It's not worth the risk, and I don't use the Pro Channel so there's really no need to.

I have never encountered that. I as a rule don't open projects from a new version in an older version. I believe CW does not ensure forward compatibility. Only backward compatibility. Thanks for giving more information on the PC issue. I still can't say I have had any problems with it.

Should I upgrade to Sonar X1? How stable is Sonar X1 now? Not often mentioned as a factor when deciding upon upgrading to a new version (of any software) is the true cost. I'm not talking about the $ to buy the upgrade. I'm talking about our most precious resource ... time. Even if there were no bugs, you'd have to download gigabytes worth of data in 8+ separate files. Better burn them to make a backup - more time. Then you have to install the separate programs and type in an incredibly long password because you're a licensed user. (pirates often can skip that step). Then you have to download each of the next patches. Then you have to install each patch, in order. Why wouldn't cakewalk make a single update patch installation so you could just install the latest patch? (Perhaps global warming?) In a couple of months, there may be an update to X2 - which will be priced with about the same discount if you upgrade from your older version or if you upgrade from X1. Why did Cakewalk stop offering a bigger discount for the most recent version? (A vast conspiracy by left and right wingers?) Waiting might be prudent. I've never been able to upgrade Sonar versions in less than a day. But maybe i'm not smart enough. Big hardware issues could affect you. Will your soundcard work with X1? Must you upgrade your OS? If you run XP then Cakewalk will force you into SP3, and we won't discuss here what M$ embedded into that. Must you upgrade your PC? If you were buying a brand new PC, say from one of the often recommended custom audio guys on this forum, getting it bundled with X1 could make sense. They reportedly deliver working systems with the kinks worked out. If you've got a working PC with an older version of Sonar working fine.... What was your question?

You know, you don't have to sit and watch while it downloads. You can go and do something else.
