How to make wavetables for rapture

A friend of mine has about 16 vintage synths (jupiter 8, moog so on) and i would realy love to take samples of the raw waveforms to make wavetables to be detuned and multi voiced for rapture, can any one shed any light as to how its done, obviously some sort of software application is needed

    obviously some sort of software application is needed
    All you really need is some type of audio editor; preferably one that can select / zoom down to the individual sample level.    Audacity, Sound Forge, Adobe Audition; just to name a few examples.  If the resulting wavfile is less than 3000 samples in length, Rapture will automatically treat it as an oscillator.  (There's also a method in the .sfz format to create an oscillator out of any size wavfile.)

    Here are two links to related topics in .pdf format.   Between the two topics, you'll get a clear idea of the process involved.

     Wide Load - Stereo Wavetables in Rapture 1.1/LE {.pdf format @ 3.53 MB}

     Purebred Wavetables {.pdf format @ 3.08 MB}

    If you have z3ta+, it can be utilized as a wavetable processor:

    Yeah i've got muz3um, rubbing my hands thinking of the all possibilties with making your own wavetables, i'm glad i know this now, got the viral out break sound set might shorten some of the multisamples that came with that and osc them up, got re-fills with good samples in them (analog monsters set) think i'll unpack the refills for the samples and do the same there, it really opens alot of doors are far as programming goes, i love rapture all the more now i know this, cheers any way mate

    Yeah exodes **** is the buzz, downloaded just about all the free re-fills prom props site, i get the re-fills more to look at how they are constructed, tend to make my own, as far as taking 1 cycle as a wavetable, who's going to miss that (lol)

    shorten some of the multisamples that came with that and osc them up
    Here's an easy method for creating oscillators from wavfiles much longer than 3000 samples.  Keep in mind that long sample conversion will add to the processing overhead, so trim the files down to the bare minimum.

    --------------------------------
    Open up a text editor (Notepad), and drop in the following line:

    <region> sample=SAMPLE FILE NAME.wav oscillator=on

    Substitute the proper file name for SAMPLE FILE NAME, and save it with an .sfz file extension.  Place both the SAMPLE FILE NAME.sfz and SAMPLE FILE NAME.wav files next to each other in Rapture's Multisamples folder.
    --------------------------------

    Now you have a single wavfile pulling double-duty.  The .wav alone will play back at recorded pitch on middle C / MIDI Note 60, as a "one-shot". It will be transposed, shortened or lengthened at other MIDI note locations.  The companion .sfz file will 'compress' the .wav characteristics into an oscillator.  This wavetable won't sound much like the original wavfile, but it will yield some very interesting results.

    I happen to like the results derived from complex targets, such as an open hi-hat sample.  But any source is fair game.  It can be a loop, pure noise, vocals, etc.  The first page of that "Purebred Wavetables" document (linked above) pictures a series of 10 sine .wavs played in descending succession over 10 octaves.  When converted into an oscillator, it sounds like a cascading sweep of overtones / harmonics.

    Re:How to make wavetables for rapture 2010/08/08 10:31:05 (permalink)
    In Notepad:

    File -> New
    Copy and paste the text line below, or simply type it in the same general format.
    <region> sample=SAMPLE FILE NAME.wav oscillator=on

    File -> Save As
    Change the 'Save as type' to 'All Files'.
    Type SAMPLE FILE NAME.sfz into the 'File Name' slot.
    Click on the Save button, and navigate to Rapture's Multisamples folder.
    Make sure that the referenced .wav (SAMPLE FILE NAME.wav) is in the same folder as SAMPLE FILE NAME.sfz

    From Rapture, load the SAMPLE FILE NAME.sfz from the 'Load Multisamples' dialog.

    It's a similar process in other text editors.  Effectively, you're taking a standard-issue .txt file (with proper opcode syntax that Rapture understands), and re-naming the file extension to .sfz.  Depending on your O/S and how it's set up, you may have to uncheck 'Hide extensions to known file types' in Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View -> Advanced Settings (or a similar path).

    Re:How to make wavetables for rapture 2010/08/08 14:47:07 (permalink)
    Three quick questions:

    1).  Can you load the original 'raw' sample (.wav) into Rapture (Load Multisample dialog)?
    2).  Have you checked the .sfz file for extra spaces, naming errors, etc.?
    (You can copy your .sfz file text and paste it into a reply here.)
    3).  Are you getting any error popups (sfzlog)?
    (You can copy the error log contents and paste them into a reply here.)

    EDIT:
    I see that you've had some measure of success.  The end results will vary widely; depending on the original sample source, the length of the file, etc.  If this first experiment sounds like it has a HP / BP filter on it, look to the frequency distribution of the sample source.

    Rapture is going to interpolate everything in the source sample, and 'reduce' it down to fit an oscillator's characteristics.  A .wav file of several seconds will get 'squeezed' into the space of a few thousand individual samples.

    I don't know what you've used as a source file, but you can try some simpler .wav files, and build up to more complex ones.  Perhaps some single notes from a synth, or some drum hits.  You have to try a few dozens examples before you can get a 'feel' of what to expect in the results of a "forced oscillator".

    it was samples from re-fills, they were a bit long, buzzing making wavetables though, i'm doing that just now, trying different sound sources, it's cool the zeta can generate wavetables, i should have a lot of fun programming, i've hit a brick wall with productions cause i'm not getting the sounds i want, hopefullyt  this will do the trick, it should do, cheers again. P.S as far as the three questions go, i typed the name fo the wave file instead of sample file name

    To be honest, anything that I did (years ago) on the Project5 or Sonar Wiki's was "composed" on the Wiki itself.  That was the nature of the formatting process.  Once the Wikis went down, that was it.  I *may* have some of the components archived on hard drives, or a CutePDF snapshot of them.  Maybe not.  I'll check when I get back into town.

    Maybe someone else here has a copy of the Wiki contents, or can point you to one of those snapshot-in-time archive sites.  The Steal this Waveshape! tricks were among my favorite Dim/Rap/z3ta+ techniques.

    Maybe we can ask Bob (techead) if he might have a backup or a way to get in touch with Mike West to see if we can extract text and images from any backups he might have?

    I'll check my externals here, but I probably only would have saved images or pdfs, not the text from the wiki pages... doh.

    That's them.  Thanks.  I also happened to find the related images on an old backup drive, too.  (I should've been searching for "stolenwaveshape" instead of "stealthiswaveshape".)  All the parts are in place to reconstruct both parts of the article.  Except ... that it really should be updated for z3ta+ 2.

    Hmmm. I'm with you until: When you're satisfied with the audible results, right-click on the display itself, and choose Save Wavetable As ... I don't get a Save Wavetable as option......(version 1.5.3) EDIT: Works perfectly in Z3TA+2 so I'm good to go...thanks for the info!
