GREAT post.  I WISH I could use drum maps for creating clips with Step Sequencer, but they deliberately designed it to not work with drum maps.  Oh, you can create the clips - but all kinds of weird bad things happen when you then try to edit any of them.  After some back and forth emails to support, they told me they did NOT intend for drum maps to be used with Step Sequencer.

Wait, is that a new fact as of X2? It's been a little while since I've worked with the Step Sequencer, but I could've sworn I used drum maps with it in X1... Am I mistaken? I know I was able to set up my drums for SS in an organized fashion SOMEHOW.

It's not you.  When Sonar7 came out with the Step Sequencer, it was all about drum maps.  Tutorials, advertisements, the whole works.  Somewhere between 8.5 and X1 (or the "Step Sequencer 2"), [someone] pulled a 180.

Yet I swear I used them with SS in X1... I'll have to go open up an old X1 project to look and see.

Ah, it appears I must have just made my customizations in the row settings within SS, on a MIDI track with a drum map already assigned to it. Guess it was just same-difference to me in my particular case.

But yeah, you'd think the ability to assign drum maps directly into the SS would be so obvious... strange.

I don't doubt you one bit, dimelives1.  I d/l X1 and all of those updates, but never installed them.  I went straight from 8.5 to X2.  So I don't exactly know where the focus on drum maps and the Step Sequencer changed.

But if you google 'sonar 7 step sequencer', you'll come up with all sorts of articles and Cakewalk videos touting the tight integration of drum maps and the step sequencer.

The SS is a very powerful tool. And I find it harder to use it without drum maps.

Feature request, or Re-Feature request?! LOL : )

good idea, but over engineered, input wise to a point it took far longer to input info than it should have. it could have been far better if you could import a text file / sfz etc also. OR there was a thing where it went thru the notes, no audio = no note. or used a sample of 50-100 sounds.. per type.. to know the sound e.g. take the data etc from 100 kicks etc.
