I like the X2 interface improvements but man is it crash-prone
In about 20 minutes of playing with it I've gotten it to blow up twice. Once doing the highly difficult task of "opening the piano roll". Sigh, always the case with new software. Off go the bug reports.

I haven't had a single one. must be you or your computer. Sorry I'm only kidding. When X1 was released that was all I could say for months because that's all it did. I wouldn't quite call your event a bug though. Can you create a recipe that will always result in it crashing. And BTW when you say it's blown up what is it exactly that you're describiing. I see you have joined the forum in May this year and have X1D installed. Have you been using X1 successfully? You PC specs look fine. Are you over clocking? Maybe dial it back if you are. try different buffers. M-Audio 2496 wouldn't be my choice for a sound card but if it's been stable with X1D then I guess that's that.

Ya X1 worked fine. Opening the Piano Roll seems to be a recipe for a crash. It's automated utility has sent off the information to Cakewalk so they can sift through it.

I used X2 all evening vocal recording session. Really like Breverb. Jury is still out on a couple of other changes. Not sure if I like each take having its own lane in a channel. Sometimes I liked it, sometimes i didn't. I do like having the track/clips automation is seperate lanes. Had 1 crash, but i had the same kind of crash in X1 and even 5.Sound card related. rebooted and all was well. So far so good. Rmix is pretty cool. Will be exploring that soon. Disappointed in TH2, really wish it has SOME presets. I can understand not having all, but a few would have been nice. Guitar Rig lite even came with a few. Overall I am pleased with X2 so far.

I've had it running ever since I installed it and apart from deliberately closing it it's been rock solid and running for about 6 hours. I have to admit I've never had such a stable first version. Even pre X1 I could make SONAR crash if I did some silly stuff like moving screens around too much and opening and closing plugins and moving and opening windows and dialog boxes. But this is solid.

Good for you mudgel- you deserve a solid release this time! I'm able to crash this one but it's as you say- doing silly things, and in my case doing multiple silly things almost simultaneously.

I've sure been getting a lot of random crashing under XP (it seems to install and basically work however, which is a bonus) - haven't tied it to a particular situation yet, but I'm testing as I try to get a track mixed. I'll be using it a lot more on Win7, so it will be interesting to see if the bugs are common to both or discrete...

Hi guys - I'm sorry to hear about these crashes. I would like to ask that you make sure to send over the crash logs when the Fault Reporter pops up. This will allow us to start debugging and fix these issues. Writing in comments to describe what you were doing helps us a lot, but isn't required.

Sad to hear about your troubles, I hope you get it resolved and that you are an exception. I'll be waiting on the demo if I upgrade at all. All I really care about is that core features work, and of course I'd like to see customizations put back in the program by X3 - otherwise Sonar 8.5.3 forever (or brand X). I could care less about Broverb or any other effects - way too much focus on this add on junk by Cake in my opinion. I'd rather have a stable program and hand select effects I actually want or need.

subtlearts XP is unsupported and untested with SONAR X2 so also any issues that are XP specific will not be addressed. Also going forward future updates may not even install on XP so its in your best interest to use a more current OS like Win7 or the upcoming Win8.

Hey Noel, thanks, I was aware of that so will not be asking for support on this XP install; I'll be using X2 on a newer Win7 machine for the most part, but I still have XP on this old desktop and thought it would be interesting to see if the new beast would run. It does, but it's more 'genius' than 'seamless' so far... however, I'm probably not the only one around here with an XP machine still in service, so it might be interesting for others to get a bit of a headsup on the state of things in terms of whether X2 is usable under XP or not. I did manage to get a mix kicked out, but there were quite a few random crashes doing things like opening the multidock... so given that no-one will be testing or working on these issues, I'll probably plan on upgrading the OS on this machine at some point if it looks like I'll be using X2 here. It's a tradeoff - the XP/X1 combination has been pretty good here, but after a few months working on X2 I expect it will be tough to go back - that's usually how these things go!

No worries, just giving you guys a heads up about XP and X2. Having to support Windows 8 means no more XP. There are significant changes and Microsoft's runtimes themselves will simply not install on XP. X2 has been widely tested on Win7 and is very solid.

Hi Noel, Does this also apply to Vista Ultimate 32bit? Being a hobbyist, I'm in the plans of building a Win7 64 bit machine (depending on available funds) and wanted to know if I should purchase the X2 upgrade or just wait? I realize there won't be any X2 support, but I don't know how close (or far) the Vista OS is with Win7?

As of today X2 loads and works fine in Vista which is similar to Win7 in many ways. However once we do Win8 support the multitouch features will only work on Win8 and Win7. Microsoft actually blocks that stuff out on Vista. I'm not certain how this will pan out myself until we finish the work but there is a possibility that Vista will still load X2 (no official testing or support though).

I am thinking new DAW with Win 8 next year.

I just tried out X2 Studio for about a minute, and it crashed. I didn't do anything fancy. I opened an existing (X1) project to see what it looked like, clicked around a bit, then it crashed.

Who knows what the cause is. It isn't universal, if I open a fresh project piano roll view works fine, however if I load a MIDI and open it, Sonar blows up. However it generates a crash log so off to Cakewalk those go. They have a few of them from me now, I imagine they'll be able to figure out what is wrong.

DAMN...now I'm kicking myself for not waiting 6 months for the bugs to get fixed! The loops wouldn't even install because of "file corruption" and X2 just keeps crashing (using Win7)...DOH! (My computer has otherwise been very stable and X1 ran well.) Do I need to re-install everything and re-download everything? Or just wait for word from Cakewalk?

I've had 3 crashes so far, in 1 day of heavy use but have never had the fault reporter pop up. Is there something I have to do to enable it? I don't remember doing anything to enable it in X1. One crash was apparently right in the middle of writing the autosave file, since when I tried to open it to recover some work I did right before the crash it was truncated and would not open. The only external plugs I was using were some older Voxengo plugs, maybe they were the issue? (Though I didn't have a problem in X1). Other than that maybe I have a corrupt download/install. Will keep investigating. John

djtrailmixxx Install Win 7 X64, upgrade to 8 when it comes out. 8 is great. I second that. I installed Windows 8 on our 4 computers already. It's quite a bit faster than Windows 7 (and blows Vista away) on the same hardware. I agree that its great and definitely a worthwhile upgrade. Sonar X1 and X2 work on it as well. Of course X2 is crashing on occasion. X1 is still stable so I am not uninstalling it until a patch for X2 is released. hopefully that happens very soon!! I am so looking forward to spending some serious time with X2 but for now, its more of a tease :( To many times I find my self thinking... "Wow, that is a cool feature. What! This ####!! app crashed again and again I lost my work!!". It sure has me clicking Save a LOT.

I have had X2 crashing yesterday and today. Yesterday X2 crashed twice (for no apparent reason), partially hanging so that part of X2 was working. So I was able to do a save-as of my project. Today X2 just crashed, again for apparent reason. When X2 has crashed no Sonar file dump was produced. Using Win 7 64Bit Going to update to a new September 2012 graphics driver tomorrow (current driver 2011), see if it makes any difference. Also some lower parts of Pro Channel disappeared from view, yesterday and today, leaving a blank spaces.
