I may have popped my ribbon

When I ever so lightly tap my AEA R84 Ribbon mic there a rattling metallic sound (similar to how a vacuum tube sounds when it's "going" and you tap on it).

The good thing is the factory is in Pasadena, CA (about 46 miles from me). I bought the mic 16 months ago and have been very loving and gentle with it (pop screen and cover it when not in use). If it is out of warranty work required and it is the ribbon, it seems it will be $140 to fix it.

Prolly take a drive out there tomorrow to drop it off.

And not be here, for how long?! I think not!

Buy another one, when it comes, box the old one up and ship it to them!

    :)

I would have to think that those ribbons aren't that hard to replace.

    Here ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStSCPG81n8

... see, it's not that hard.

    :)

    LMAO.

He shows how to cut and corrugate but not how to actually replace it.

Ya, I'll take mine to the factory.

    Not to my knowledge.

    I've never banged it.

It sits permanently on the same mic stand in the same spot.

The pop filter is always in use.

They warn to NOT have phantom power engaged (which I do not do).

I cover it when not in use.

Did you take it to the grand opening of a store or bridge?  They seem to like to cut ribbons on those occasions.

    (Just sayin'...)

I think he reversed the flow of electrons causing it to be a speaker instead of a mic and it wasn't rated for 200W @ 8 Ohms.

    you noticed that too huh?

There was...may still be... a company selling a kit on the net where you build a ribbon mic..... pretty cheaply too....IIRC....

Don't know Craig. I'm apprehensive about opening it up. Which leads me to wanting to drive the 46 miles to take it in. I'll call first and maybe they will repair on the spot.

    It's karma...

Anybody who deliberately uses "prolly" instead of "probably" fully deserves their ribbon mics to break.

I don't think tightening a ribbon is hard, at least from things I have read... I have not done it myself. You should take a look inside I think.
