Hey CLiff, I just read this bit:

I would give anything to have have 24 Gig in there instead of just 16. I have even asked the question here in this forum a couple of times and did not get a response.......

This set of components:

Intel Core i7-950
Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3
24GB Kingston Hyper-x 1600MHz-DDR3 Triple Channel

Are guaranteed to work together and you get the full 24GB of RAM

Bristol

Excellent...this is why I love this forum....cause some one can always lead you in a better direction.....

Thank you very much...I will have a look at this set up...
That is another reason I have a list  set out for myself...........but I did it in pencile!!

thank you
Clifford

Also, it might be wise to put off buying the case & PSU until you've got everything else.

That way you can spec the case according to the physical size of all the internal cards and spec the PSU similarly

Bristol

OK.....I can understand you point of view here.....

However there will only be (outside the mobo) two internal cards....the GPU and the Firewire...I've seen both (Have already used one) and they each should not have an issue fitting inside this case... it is s full tower case and has a lot of room in there....

Now the PSU .......well you may be on to something here cause I have never seen it so I do not know the size but I will be going back to make sure of the dimensions......But don't they all come in pretty much a standard size?????

Or is it based on power?  the bigger the power the bigger the unit?

After your previous experience, I would think that a UPS would be #1 on the new list.  Except for that, I don't see any glaring faults.

You are exactly correct.....!!

I have already purchased two new Battery back ups which are plugged into two new power surge protectors which are plugged into the wall outlet........

but even still..........when I am finished playing they will be unplugged from the wall !!!!!!!!!!! Everytime.....

Right now this is how I handle my internet computer and  although it is a hassel to get down on the floor to unplug it then get back up to walk away.............it is still way cheaper

and besides.........it is 100% effective!

Thanks for your thoughts

Hi Cliff,

FWIW, Unless you're doing *huge* orchestral mockups (using the likes of Hollywood Strings, Hollywood Brass, etc... all simultaneously), you don't need 24GB of RAM.
You'd be better off putting that money into a faster processor.

BTW, The 1155 motherboards support 32GB of RAM (once the 8GB sticks are available), so you do have a long-term upgrade path... should it ever become necessary.

Best Regards,

Jim Roseberry

A big part of the experience is in the preparation... What's not clear though, is if you settled on the components of your original list or, have made modifications. Anyways, enjoy your new build.

Well  ....

You are exactly correct.......Preperation is the key......and I did a LOT of it........I am not shy about it.....because I did do the work.......but you are very correct.....Good solid Prep

Also that is a fair question concerning the components.....

I stayed very close to my original specs (Not Brands) listed..... I believed they were good solid choices based on what I read in this very forum from all of you.......plus outside sources that I researched.......but a lot of my info started right here.....

I subbed out 7 items.....nothing I lost sleep over...because I was stuck on the end result and not the individual part brands.........

Case
RAM
CPU Fan
Power Supply
Firewire Card
Hard Drives
Windows 7 Edition

Please understand my next statement here......

This is very delicate......and I am trying to explain it properly to be respectfully to you and Jim Roseberry.............

I Paid Jim Roseberry consultation fee's for his expertise. I feel that I would be disrespectful of his business and income if I reveal his recommendations to me......However as stated above our lists were similar .......So please do not get angry with me over this......

If Jim wants to tell then that is his choice.....I have no problems about it...... I feel I paid him for his guidance and knowledge  and he gave it freely and willingly.......I appreciate the fact that he is a very kind and generous person and wish to show respect to him and his business.........so please do not be angry with me about this......

What I will say is that 95% of all my components were ordered thru NewEgg, 3 parts from TigerDirect and My Firewire card thru an online source....So they are all very easily accessible components to everyone......nothing hidded here....

The case I felt was the major thing I compensated on..... I purchased a NZXT Phantom case in Black....$120 from Tiger Direct  I had been to Comp USA several times between Feb. and  Aug and always looked at this case. but for me the ONLY draw back is the lack of a USB 3.0 port on the front...Which I wanted but did not get...(But I do own a router and know just enough of how to use it to be dangerous to myself )...and the fact that if you want to add additional fans you need to buy the NZXT fans because they are not a true standard size........that is it........other wise I felt it was a strong case......in fact Jim suggested a different one ......His suggestion came in at a cost of right around $90 so close enough not to be a deal breaker.....

The Firewire card is a Uibrain Firewire card.....I have used these in the past and like them...Jim suggested something else. I went with what I knew.....cost wise it was $40 and just at the price range that he had suggested but again nothing to lose sleep over.....

The PSU......instead of the 1200w unit I wanted I followed Jim's suggestion and downsized....oh and there was a rebate on this PSU as well which I mailed away for this morning.......

The RAM, I bought 16 GIG but I followed  Jim's recommended type, configuration and brand

Same with the CPU Fan..... I went with Jim's recommendation........an I must say......it is honking big ol thing at that!!!  It was in the very same price range as the one I picked out.....so again.....good deal...

The hard Drives.......I follwed Jim's recommendation here as well...so again just a swap in brands... not spec's

The OS I again deviated a little.....my pick was $20 over his recommendation but I think he understands that I see the future expansion posibilities......

That is it......other wise Jim's recommendation and mine lined up pretty well with what I layed out in my original post here........

I guess because of thru research thru this forum which I  took advantage of both Scott's and Jim's recommendations to others.....so that was my starting point and because of that fact,  in the end,  we were very very close.....

So
Alegria
Old 55
Tim

Thank you for the well wishes...(I will need them)
I tried to answer your questions as best as I could and I hope this helps give you some direction.....

I know tim you are deciding right now.....
What I think was the biggest help was
1. write all my parts down
2. do the consultation thing...be it Jim or Scott......it was worth every penny...
3. when you do your build.......just take your time......if you get aggravated, put it down, walk away and come back in a few hours....

My biggest headach was
1. Wiring the built in fans for that case....very confusing......bad instructions.......my solution was just take it one wire at a time...... I also added the 3 extra fans.......I am very happy with it......fairly quiet.... lots of air flow
2. the design of the HD installation......could have been easier but .... I did it......

I am happy and looking forward to many a hours of having a sore butt!

Angry???  Ok, my turn to dot the eyes. I do not make a living out of building systems. So it's pretty fair to say that I am not a pro (within that context, but I do know more than I let on). I am not here to compete with Jim or anybody else. As a matter of fact, I wish Jim and his business all the best. May you build a thousand more systems Jim and be happy and successful for many more years to come.

That said, I shared my humble opinion with you based on my recent build experience... that's it that's all. If this is to be interpreted as intruding on somebody's turf, all I can say is that the last time I looked, this was/is a public forum, meant to facilitate information sharing between its members and anyone browsing this site/forum. I also believe that most regular members here are a very smart bunch and can make up their own minds as to whats what. Right?!

Bottom line, I understand that the particulars of your paid consultation session with Jim (which I was not aware of) is a private affair between you two, and I respect that. Thanks for the heads-up.

You are 100% correct!.....I do not and cannot argue any of your points..........Your sharing of your opinions of your build to me was taken in gratitude.....It really was.......You gave unselfishly as well......that is why I am feeling very ugly about not being able to share with you what Jim spec'ed out did with me....

I tried to explain this and maybe I just did not do a good job of it....for that I apoligize...... I do feel I can share the build experience with you, any isssues I had and / or any solutions I found along the way.......again, did I not do that in the last post??????       I want to believe that I did ......

I believe that shared / explained with you everything that I picked out, or did, or chose on my own...etc......I feel anything that I did or found the research on, or picked out is fair game to give back to this community......and In my very first and this last post did I not try to do that??????

I know I did not share "every part" but I did share everything I truely felt I could, where I deviated from what was recommended and how the build went.......did I not????????

You are correct about the folks on this forum being very intellegent and savy. Most can figure things out.....a fact that is not lost on me.....because there are many, many more people here who are a whole lot smarter than I am......but I am grateful for their knowledge and willingness to help so I know that they will figure everything out.......There is NOTHING I can do that someone else cannot figure out.....nothing.....and as you said most folks can figure out for them selves what is right and this is my way of saying what I feel is right.....

In all honesty up to last week Jim was not involved in this build.....but I realized that i did need some expertise and guidance and so I did the consultations with him......and I am not sorry about it....it was worth every penny.......and at that point I then needed to know what a was a right thing to do.......

I am sorry you feel like this.....I really am....
