I need your opinion please

After putting off upgrading my very stable DAW for a long time, it finally bit the dust.  I'm ordering myself a hot i7 as any good crazy DAW user should (lol) and I just want some feedback if anyone here has any experience with:

P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 motherboard using the i7 2600K 3.4GHz CPU?

From all I've researched so far, this looks like a solid mboard so if anyone has any negative experience with it, I'd appreciate your feedback asap as I want to order this immediately.

I'm without a DAW and that's like being without air lol.

(Well, I do have some laptops but why bother? ;))
Thanks in advance.

I couldn't of made a better selection myself..., but that's relative. Are you going for 16GBs of RAM?

    Thanks for the feedback, Alegria.

I only went for 12G.  Budget is not an issue, but I just didn't feel I needed more yet.   I've worked with 4G for years and even on huge projects (orchestral/TV work) it's never been an issue so I think 12 (for now) should suffice.  Upgrading the RAM isn't a big deal anyway, so if I need more it'll be an easy upgrade.
This is a good system coming (it's gonna be here in 2 days so I'll start preparing for the massive transfer of plugins oy lol).  The thing I don't look forward to is all the re-authorizing, etc.  But a little bit each day should get me there quick enough.

I got a great deal on everything from my distrib -- 1400 with shipping, and that inludes a 120G SSD OS drive, 1 1.5TB data/sample drives, great case, power supply, yada yada.

SO in about a week I should be up/running and being a musical maniac for awhile again ;)

    Wish me luck :D

Oh you're not getting off that easy. An SSD? Specs. please. And is that for the OS? Will you be using onboard graphics? The quoted price seems very good to say the least. I'm impressed and..., good luck to you!

Haha, well, the SSD is 120G - Corsair I think?  I have to look at my quote. (probably bigger than I need, but what the hey), and yes, for the OS - maybe some of the VST/Plugins as well.

THere'll be 2 1.5TB data/sample drives internally as well plus an array of external drives (varying between USB 3.0 and eSATA for backups, samples, etc).   All 7200rpm at least.  750w Power Supply.

I wanted 2TB drives but it seems there's some kind of HD distribution/availability issues in the channel/out there.

But changing/swapping drives is not a big deal down the road either.
We do a LOT of biz with the distributor so I know they try to give me as much discount as possible where possible.  But I'll be happy to introduce/connect anyone with them if so desired (they're not a mom and pop shop btw)

And, I should say that I was going to go to Jim Rosenberry - whom, as many here know, does oustanding work and builds great systems, but I knew my distrib could come with quality components and most likely the better 'deal', so that's basically the only reason I didn't give Jim a call on this.  I don't really need support, per se, since I am a techy kinda guy too. And that adds to the cost for consultants/builders like Jim.

Oh, I haven't decided if I'll go with the Intel/Internal grphaphics or throw in an NVidia for example.  Either way it'll be find I'm sure.

Thanks for the good luck wishes :)

Yep...this computer is definitely going to be too fast...you might need to slow it down a bit.

Man, congrats on your new system. SSD is probably the way to go but I've nearly lost all faith. I had a Corsair Force 3, new in December. This weekend it died on me and almost cost me 6000 Euro in delayed work. Coincidence had it that I had neither an extra hard drive nor a disk image at hand. However, I didn't think it was going to die that easy with normal DAW use. This was Sunday and I had a deadline on Monday at 9am - I was so stressed I nearly had a heart attack! 8:30 Am on Monday, running on coffee fumes I got everything delivered.

This SSD is going to be brutalized with a shotgun - if I can find one!

Anyhow, if it's the force series you've opted for I say get something more expensive and reliable.

Other than that, SSD is cool I guess...

I have the same processor and a P67 MB. The performance is excellent and I'm running shedloads of plugs and tracks without problems.

That's one up from the board I got (P8P67) . I don't know the differences or similarities but, One thing you may wanna check is that your ram isn't too tall and butts into the heat sync. I think I have a hair (red one) clearance.

Also. If i remember correctly, There was some issue with a proper pci-e video card fitting properly.

All in all though, it works pretty good.

Hmm, so sorry to hear you had to go through all that.  I intend to have a good backup (as always) so I'm not too worried, and, I'm hopin I'll have better luck!

(Well, I do have some laptops but why bother? ;))

WHOA there pardner! Them thars fightin' wards!

I run an i7 laptop (see below) with Sonar that works as good or better than my desk top... 'Course it's not yer average laptop.

Also I've noticed that Windows 7 x32 still has that blasted 4 GB memory cap. Hope yer runnin' x64 otherwise all that xtra ram won't matter.
And that's true about the MB ram. If you use one of those huge radiator/fan coolers they don't give the ram closest to it much room to breath. Almost any heatsinked/highrise module won't fit there.
That's the one thing I don't like about ASUS MBs.

Well, 32bit OS can't do more than 4G RAM anyway ; but yeah, I'm going full 64bit fo shoa ;)

This systems has plenty of cool going on inside so I'm not worried about that.

Oh and sure laptops are fine, but I just prefer a desktop for my DAW for many reasons.

im a desker here as well,i went into this with ben last week about why the desk will never die.i used x1 on an i3 X64 for awhile till i built my own and yes it was a desk.theres so much more room for updates, video cards, pci slots,if a fan goes out it wont take me a year to open it up to replace one fan thats welded to the heatsink,exc...and i know this sounds lame, but ventilation is a huge plus,i use a program to tell me my core temp, case temp,hd temp...i ran all these sensors when i was building it.a laptop gets way to hot and when things get to hot they get funky, ask anyone who owns a H.P.dv6000 or 9000 series the class action law suit fixed almost 10,000 plus, videocards that were being melted do to a poor design.now laptops can perform well imo and like i said i used one for awhile but if i had my choice id take a desktop anyday

@soens..i know you say your i7 laptop works better than your desktop anyday..well let me ask you...what is your desktop? because if its the same as your desktop then they should be the same, not better.the only thing your missing is the extra 5 usb ports your laptop doesnt have..am i right? and when you want to use two monitors..what will you do then?
dont tell me youll buy one of those usb-vga docking units cause that sucks your cpu right out.
over all soens,it sounds like you have a great computer there.and a year ago i was right there with you man  :)

@anyone,youll never sell me on the idea a laptop is better than a desktop unless its just a better model.
but you will sell me on the idea that when it comes time to expand, you might as well go buy another laptop or a new 5 usb port hub expantion unit...lol

The i7 2000 series is going to be obsolete in a matter of days. There's a new line of i7's that are supposed to be coming out next month called Ivy Bridge. I'd wait if I were you.

    A side note...

I upgraded my friends computer from 4 to 15 GB RAM. I noticed a huge loss of hard drive space on C the OS drive. Windows was reserving 15 GB for the page file and another 15 GB for the hibernation file. That's 30 GB to run Windows with default settings. Rediculous! No idea what MS is thinking. Anyways, found out how to turn of hibernation which I've never used anyways and got back 15 GB. I let MS manage the page file and just took the hit on the 15 GB page file. But this kind of garbage is exactly why I hate MS.

Thought mention that for your new build.

You can change the amount for pagefile,I ave mine at 2.5 GB,thats all thats really needed.

Dear OP did you look at the link for Scott from ADK's assumption that "Ivy is not worth waiting for"??

Guess not. Certain builders also ain't too fond of ASUS either, but who cares? Roight?

I researched it at the time but could never find a definitive answer whether it's better to let MS manage the page file or to specify its size manually. There seemed to be a number of arguments for letting Windows manage it so...

Just seems like Windows could manage it more efficiently than it does.

If you can point me to a good source describing managing the page file manually and how much should be allocated I'd appreciate it.

I'm not talking about how to do it. I know that.

    May help out Billy also.

In a 32 bit OS it used to be installed Ram X 1.5 making it 6GIG for the page file but with a 64bit OS I stick to 50% of available physical RAM or none at all.
I've never been able to pick a discernible difference with either scenarios.

Billy: is that an Asus board. What is it that made u pick this one over others? Just want to know as I too am looking to upgrade from an i7 920 system and want to be about 3 years from another upgrade

    Dear scarey avitar person,

If you let windows manage virtual mem it will keep changing in size as windows sees fit. As the HDD fills up there becomes less space for it to manage.
This could be a problem if your application needs more VM than you have to complete a task.

For the average user this is not an issue. Let Windows manage it. For power users (like us) it may be to your advantage to set it and forget it.

The amount you need depends on the software using it. The larger the files you work with the more VM it may use. Photo editing and sound production are two heavy hitters.

A good rule of thumb I use is to have as much VM as actual memory but no less than 1/2 that. If I have 8 GB ram I want 4 to 8 GB VM. To guarantee this I have to set it manually.
That way I know I always have enough VM no matter what. When the HDD reaches capacity I upgrade to a bigger HDD.

I think the more actual memory you have the less need there is for VM. For x32's 4 GB limit it is necessary. For x64 with 64 GB of ram VM may not be as critical.

Another thing Windows likes to do is play games with "System Reserved Space." This too changes in size as you use your computer and I don't know if the user can control that.

I can't for the life of me remember where I came up with 2.5GB for pagefile, and have blown a couple hours looking, all I came up with is this :http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2021748 and then another one that said make sure min. and max. are the same!

So thats what I'm experimenting with on the test machine ATM [laptop] goodluck.

    "Bud"
The i7 2000 series is going to be obsolete in a matter of days. There's a new line of i7's that are supposed to be coming out next month called Ivy Bridge. I'd wait if I were you.

"Obsolete" is not the qualifier I would use Bud. But if money is not a problem (you do pay a premium for new chips), I would also recommend waiting a bit to see how well these new chips are received.

Dear OP did you look at the link for Scott from ADK's assumption that "Ivy is not worth waiting for"?

I was also a bit surprised by the results of those benchmarks. And they do demonstrate that the "leap" is very expensive for the extra horsepower you get. I still believe at this point that the 17 2600K will give you the best bang for the buck. And I do expect my new build (1 year old now..., just about) to serve me well for the next 6 to 8 years.

Certain builders also ain't too fond of ASUS either, but who cares?

It's cyclical. But you are right in that the "Gigabyte" boards (business class) seem to be favored by the builders currently. And I wouldn't be surprised if that changes in the next year or two. Maybe Jim can chime in on this..., without revealing specifics about models?

make sure min. and max. are the same!

And that's to avoid a fragmented page file. I completely agree and have been doing this since Windows 3.1..., remember that one?!

Billy IMO for what that is worth, that will be fine for any DAW.

Asus have had a bad rep for DOA boards in the past I don't know how prevalent that is now but TBH the Sandy Bridge Z68 boards seem much of a muchness nowadays.  I went the ASUS route and it's been rock solid for me.

Contrary to the obsolete comment it's a pretty safe bet for bang for buck quotient going the 2600k being as most of the initial sandybridge issues are known or non-issues by now.  Of course if you are really power hungry you can spend a bit more it's just a matter of choice but as far as audio is concerned you are unlikely to need anymore grunt than a 2600k provides for a good while.  Oh, and my W7 reliability monitor shows a completely flat-line at the top since January, and I love stability.

Costing wise I normally reckon on a significant at least partial upgrade every 3 years so I'm current but not paying the premium for new technology and I reckon the Sandybridge i7's are going to be serviceable for DAW use for a bit longer than that, it's one of those things where technology hits a sweet spot of cost vs performance.

I went for a really tight budget spec using an H67 and on-chip video that I had put together by a builder and I still came in under £500 with a years warranty on the box ten months ago and it's worked like a charm since and there isn't a project that I've got where it hasn't still got power to burn.

    I'd say just jump in.
