I say play what you feel that givin moment, whether it is 1 chord or several or just riffin. You never know what you'll get untill its done. I just did a 1 chord recording while I was trying to figure out what was causing sonar to crash. A few guitar parts, bass and drums and I have a pretty cool 60 second jam ( or at least that is what a couple people told me anyway.

I lost a Dm7 in november ´96 - anybody seen it?
Per

It moved to Australia in 2000, had a sex change operation, and is now living happily as an F6 chord. ;>)

Nice..but PLEASE don't tell me you used there a (typical for some styles..) loud "FOUR ON THE FLOOR" bassdrum I bet you didn't..

..maybe I just gave you an idea for a "jam remix"

Like someone already said I think that mwbrown was just joking.. I see that some see that got offended somewhat by his "joke" there.

I'm surprised that no one commented on posts #2 (yoone) and mine on #5 ..

the kind of arguments that I can't agree with kept on coming right after in #6 - "when I spend money on a machine I know how to use it or just looking to take my groove to the next level" ...wow..my bad, I didn't know that there are good machines out there that can TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

42 wasn't the meaning of life the universe and everything.
It was an answer to another question, one that neccesitated the building of another thinking machine to find out what that questiuon was.

Hey
Tenacious D had a song called "One Note Song". It had just one note. In fairness, that one note was bent once in a while. So it kind of was maybe a 1.5 note song.

Sonica Dual Core 3.4 GHz, 2GB Ram, 3HDs, UAD1, PoCo Firewire, DIGI 9652, D8B, vintage synths, guitars and more money than talent (though questionable how much of either). XP Home SP2. SPE6.2. Other things of variable interest.

But doesn't that depend on which way you bend it? If you bed a note 'til it's flat, do you end up with 1/2 note?

It doesn't matter..quarter notes and half notes work as long as there's a big'n'low BD doing the (sacred) 4 beats..
the BD sample must be from a REALLY expensive hardware unit..cheap soundfont BD sounds (or other freebie sounds) will be detected and reported to the Trance/Techno authorities.. you SURE don't want that to happen!!! unless you wanna end up creating beats for the local Polka band.

so..just TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL! PRODUCER POWER! (I need a signature.. maybe I just found one)

I have played guitar for about 35 years. I have not figured a way to bend a note flat without a whammy bar or pushing on my headstock. Mine only go sharp.

Bend the neck of the guitar away from you, thus slackening the strings!

In staying with Al's train of thought...this method would take too much effort for a trance producer. Just rip a pitch-bend wheel off a synth and tape it to the guitar body. Push it to the left for a downward, flatted bent note. .. That seems like too much work as well. Just stay away from flatted bends, they are evil and make us work too hard. Trance should be easy. Maybe throw out Sonar and buy Steinberg Sequel. That seems limiting and uncreative enough to produce quality trance with minimal effort...

Hey Jinga
I actually have a guitar with a pitch bend function. Well, it is not really a guitar. It is a Ztar. But it sort of looks like a guitar.

I just doesnt twang like a tele but it can zonk.

Zonking is good. Especially when the zonk in question comes in just past halfway through the third arpeggio, you know, measure 43, beat 3, tick 048 (Of COURSE you aren't using anything less than 960ppq now, right? RIGHT!?!? ) After all, this IS Trance...

BTW, that thing looks SWEET, are they some type of MIDI controller I'm assuming? Just looked them up...Very cool... What is the learning curve for one of those babies?

Yep, that's the way. Don't try it on a 12 string Martin Acoustic but you can bend a Les Paul's neck all day without any trouble....

Jinga I have a Ztar and have been learning it for 2 years now. It is not like playing guitar. Yeah, there are strings to trigger things. But the response of almost any synth is way different than that of a guitar.

It is cool though.

I've seen/heard a cool performance once with a Ztar.. Stanley Jordan was playing jazz standards (with some smokin' solos) like Autumn Leaves etc...he developed some amazing tapping technique thru the years -one hand plays tapping style bass/chords on an electric guitar while the other hand plays mostly single notes (sometimes more) solos on the Ztar... he really sounded like a (super) keyboardist on that thing here and there..not just because of its sound.. the way it's played..straight notes, MIDI..no bending and guitar nuances..mostly pure (and fast) single note runs and phrases!

Trance should be easy

Not at all! don't forget, it's all the DETAILS there that count. programming lots of details can take much time..not so easy learning how to turn all those Cutoff and Res knobs you know.. PLUS automating it all.. creating beautiful melodies and all...

(not that practicing playing like John Coltrane is easy!)

Yeah Al you can set it up to where the keys (think fretboard) trigger the sounds and you can hit multiple notes per string type thing. I have mainly used it for replacing atmospheric open chord stuff that I did with an accoustic guitar before.

Live is probaly easier than recording since you still have to worry about double triggering. However, after owning 3 different generations of Roland Guitar synths, this does track really well.

It takes a majorly (is that a word) different technique though. DIgging into the string with the edge of your pick does nothing. Palming the strings after picking does nothing. Resting your hand on the bridge can trigger the "All Notes Off".

For an old redneck like me, the Z is a totally different instrument. It is tres cool though.
