Do the song file timelines that they display look different than the ones you uploaded? Compression changes that visual quite a bit. Assuming of course that it's even an accurate wave picture.

Sorta.... It's not a thread. It's not even a PM. It's an email discussion.... which makes me hesitant to post, BUT..... it's nothing earth shattering. And I don't think he'd have an issue with me putting it up.... so.... I'll do it (I'm SO SORRY Bit, if this is a bad, bad girl... they MADE me!!!!) In a discussion where he was spectrum analyzing a track I did a loooong time ago, he decided to post my sample on a few sites and re-analyze the compressed result from each site. in a nutshell: "After analyzing the differences between soundclick, myspace, purevolume and reverbnation, using both your song and others, I've concluded that the horrid mangling committed by web-based stream players is largely due to re-encoding for lower bit rates. Most of the ugliness is caused by aliasing, aggravated by uneven high frequency distribution."
I thought he'd used soundcloud as well... but maybe it was too new at that point, or didn't even exist..... I am not to be trusted.
Told you my memory was awful. :D Hardly even worth posting, really.....

I uploaded a 320kb/s file to SoundCloud ( link), then downloaded it. Both original and downloaded files were the same size, so no re-encoding had taken place. I pulled them up in Adobe Audition and had it report average RMS for the entire song, which would have revealed any compression. It reported -14db average RMS for both songs, so no compression had taken place. Conclusion: downloaded files are exact copies of what you uploaded. However, streaming a file is another story. For playback, SoundCloud does appear to re-encode to a lower quality. To test this, I captured the playback (I use a nifty little free tool called Streamosaur for capturing streaming audio) into a 44.1KHz/16-bit wave file and brought that up in Audition. Being a wave file versus an MP3, I could not determine anything by comparing file sizes alone. However, the tip-off for re-encoding is the frequency spectrum. The original file extended out to over 20KHz, but the captured file was chopped off sharply at around 16.5KHz, which is characteristic of a 128 kb/s-encoded MP3. There was, however, no compression. Audition reported the same average RMS for the captured file as the original (after normalizing).
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I didn't see this while I was performing my own tests and I've come to the same conclusion as Dave. it's a browser/streaming issue, not an issue with any specific host site. the only thing I did different from what Dave describes above is: After capturing the stream from Soundcloud in Sonar (which showed me about -3dB peaks lower than the original!) I then exported some carefully selected clips from each file and ran them thru the TT Dynamic Range Meter. the DR on both files were the same, but the peaks were about -2.5dB lower in the streamed recording and the RMS was about 2.5dB lower as well. NOTE: since the DR is the same, I'm assuming NO compression. oh - I also verified that WMP wasn't adding compression or lowering the volume or EQ also by checking the original MP3 I uploaded against the mp3 I downloaded from Soundcloud in sonar. they were identical. OH! and I check 2 different browsers - IE9 and Chrome 19.01something and they were identical. so this likely a limitation of all browsers and streaming.

If you click on a Soundcloud song and go to your Windows temp folder, you will find the mp3 there renamed something like hdnfm4n.128. Open that up and it's 128kbps.
That's what it's doing with my free acct. anyway ; )
