I used to be CLEAN. And, a new Geronimo Cowboy tune - Lady Blue.

OK - I think I've finally decided I can't get back on as CLEAN.

Here's a new tune I did with my old Geronimo Cowboy's partner Mike Vlaskis. I wrote the music, played guitar and mixed this one. Mike wrote the lyrics, sang and played bass. Bill Davies (Tonecarver) played keyboard and did all the other sounds you hear.

After taking nearly a year off from music, I'm back writing some new tunes. Warren Wilingham and I (the Pugtones) are recording our first new tune in a year. I plan on spending more time here now. I look forward to hanging with you all again.

Anyone who has heard the Geronimo Cowboys in the past know we can be a bit strange - sometimes in a good way - sometimes not so much - I'll let you be the judge on this one.

Thanks for taking a listen.

    Hey Mark,
    long time!

    love the guitars on this
vocals sound muffled and phasy - like maybe you cloned and timeshifted them?  I'll take 1 good clean track over cloned vocal tracks any day.  I'd clean the vocals up and honestly, Im not fond of the style either, sounds like hes sober but trying to sing like he's drunk.

    love the organ and keys

I'm sure you meant to make it this way, but I'm not fond of the instrumental bridge, it's too chaotic for my tastes.

all in all, I guess not my cuppa.  don't take that too hard.  my opinion's not worth the price of a cup of coffee...

Instrumentally this is cool and creative, Vocally, it's not a pleasant listen. Maybe that's intentional.

Thanks all for taking and listen and for the comments. The vocals are what they are - that's how Mike sounds - a bit loose.

Mark, I never could come up with a lyric idea for this song so just getting that done is a good job.  Your guitars are the focal point of the tune and they come across great.  Oh, BTW, does this mean that you are dirty now?

I agree about Hendrix vibe. I can't comment on the vocals as they're better than mine. ;-)

I too had a heck-uv-a time getting logged on.  I'm not even sure what I did to get it to work?  I'm glad that you are back on the forum posting.  I also get a Velvet Underground feel from this.  This song is quirky but to me quirky good!  Maybe I hear things differently but I get a wee touch of a David Byrne sound in the vocals.?.  I hear that you still have that CLEAN guitar sound.  The guitar sounds great.  Lady Blue --- what a great title for a song  ;>)

i love it musically - really inventive and some great production stuff going on.
i get the vocal style but I'm not too keen on the effect on his voice - it sounds like he's in a different room from the music. I would like to hear it with the vocal right up front and almost dry. But just my opinion.
    Good stuff

    Mark,

Sounded great, then the vocals began;(  The guitars and backing track are all pretty cool, solid musically.   I like the playing but the vocals are very distracting.

I'm gonna call this like I hear it. Not intended to be insulting but instead as encouragement to say what's right and what's wrong....IMHO, with the mix.

Musically this is cool.  Nice clean sound to the guitar. The guitar is the best part of the mix.
As it started, I was thinking.... man this is sweet..... then at 30 seconds in the parts didn't fit together..... Quite a few places after that have issues that I noticed..... bass not matching the guitar, vox way off.... muddy grunge in the mix around 2:40 that just doesn't sound like it should be there.

Vocally, yeah, it leaves some to be desired.  It certainly sounds like you tried to do a layering/doubling. Either with recorded tracks or cloning. Cloning is almost always never a good idea.  Double tracking is usually the best option when used correctly.  Of course singing in tune is an even better idea. It's one thing to be "off the cuff" and "spontaneous" and nail the groove, vs just doing something that doesn't fit. Quite a bit of the singing fits the latter category. Slurring and moaning out of key or pitch.....  There were several places where the singer's melody line did not fit the chords being played. That makes it sound like the singer didn't know the song.

The thing is, this is a cool song and could easily be done right. You will probably have to go back almost to square one.... I'm thinking the drums, guitar, B3 are probably the basic tracks that you could keep. Redo the bass, and the vox. The music should be "in agreement" throughout the song. Nice and clean.

Have the singer work on the song. Sing it with purpose. Get ONE good vocal take and use that as the lead. There's generally not a need to use the doubling that way it was used here. Obviously doubled vocals sound gimmicky.  If you want to double... for fatness, then get 3 vocal takes. Make them as physically close to perfect to each other as is possible. Pan 2 opposite 50% or more and way down in the mix.... I shoot for -20db as a starting point. You should not be able to hear them in the mix unless the vocal buss is soloed.  They add just the hint of fullness to the main vox.

Anyway..... I think the song can be better... that's the main reason I commented in this way. It's a good song, now work on it a bit.

There are good comments above and I agree with all of them.  However, just listening to this morning to the song brought a smile to my face.  I like the lack of polish and laid back playing and mix.  The lead vocal sounds like it is recorded with a room mic.  I don't care though.  The playing and song is so original.  It was refreshing as my first cup of coffee.  Keep up the great vibes.
