Some great advice here! I want to re-emphasize how important it is to take your time and really play the guitar before you buy it. Check to see that it plays in tune at the nut and at the twelfth fret, does the neck shape feel right, are the fret ends uneven and sharp... those types of things. I recently bought a MIM std. Tele off of CL for $250.00 that I am still very happy with - so don't immediately rule out buying used either! Best of luck!!!

I received my new Squire Standard Telecaster yesterday! Here's what I got from MusiciansFriend for under $200. I paid $20 for a 2 year replacement warranty. Covers anything, even drops and normal use issues. Here's the link: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/squier-standard-telecaster-electric-guitar I really couldn't afford much of anything higher and I did look into pawn shops and our Craig's List to see what I could find used. The frets need some work as they are too high compared to my 70's Fender Strat and I will adjust the intonation this weekend. It sound really good and I am adjusting to the "C" neck. My goal is to learn how country/chicken pick and open myself up to a whole new world using a Tele instead of the Strat which I have had for over 25 years. I will look up how to intonate on YouTube now. Rimshot

I've got a Squire Affinity Telecaster, cost me about £120 brand new. Obviously, it's no PRS private stock or anything, but it plays great. Pickups were quite nasty, so I swapped those out for Lace Sensors. Which I know is a bit like gold-plating a rusty pan, but it means I've ended up with a killer telecaster for £200. Had it for a couple of years now, done loads of recording with it.

"I will look up how to intonate on YouTube now." Shorter sharper... longer flatter. If you have a confusion up near the 5th fret after the 12th seems good, then you can look at the nut/string height to see if you are pulling sharp from a too-high nut slot. best regards, mike

Thanks much Mike. I think the frets overall are too high so I thought I would start with lowering from the bridge, intonating, and then see where I am. Thanks for the tip on the nut/string height. Rimshot

John, if I want to adjust the neck pickup height, do I have to take off the neck to get to remove the pickguard? I am getting mixed feedback online. TIA if you know. Rimshot

If there are no adjusting screws visible for the neck pup then yes, you take the guard off. It should simply lift up and slide off under the strings with a little fiddling. The neck pup has adjusting screws that go into the body on most telecasters. You will have springs, foam or surgical tube keeping the pickup elevated, Ive seen all 3 types.

Rimshot Unless you're experienced in doing the adjustments...... refer these set-ups to a qualified luthier. For the price you paid..... it may well be a wise investment. ENJOY!

Update - after changing strings, adjusting the neck, adjusting intonation, and pickup height.... The guitar is going back for a FULL refund. MF is paying for shipping and is crediting me for the guitar, strings, strap, and bag, and warranty - everything I purchased. They even gave me a $25 credit for the hassle. Musician's Friend really came through in the sale price and now customer service. I highly recommend them to anyone. Problem is I could not get the guitar in tune! I know how to do it but no luck at all on this guitar. Perhaps this was one out of many that was just built wrong but I am now asking for a replacement. Instead, I am sticking with my trusty 70's Strat and moving on to powered monitors. I am disappointed but not bumbed. I get pretty close to a Tele sound on my custom Strat and will just try a little harder with my solos to get that country pop happening a little better. Rimshot
