Personally I think all that info is of absolutely no value.

I use an 8 yr old piece of junk to surf internet junk. If I can't wipe it clean
and start over it'll go in the trash.

No reason to put a DAW machine on the internet. Don't need protection from
anybody but it's driver.

Simple. Many other reasons to just make a change. Virus isn't one of them ..to me anyway.
Oh...if I had personal info on one I'd have one specifically for that and nothing else.

@rain... I actually wasn't aware of the appreciation but it is certainly mutual. You're a good guy and I always enjoy your posts... plus you're from my favorite country, Quebec. ;-)

Anyway, I totally agree PCs are a pain in the nether regions but to get the same power I have now from a Mac it would have cost me at least twice as much and I've never actually worked on a Mac before... like for anything, so it would be a bit of a learning curve in and of itself. Someday though I'll make the switch but as it is Sonar is currently my DAW of choice and although it works VIA Bootcamp from all reports if something goes wrong it seems like I'd be on my own and I'm not smart enough yet to take that kind of chance.

If I can ever afford Nuendo again though I'd like it to live on a Mac but that is a LOOOOONG time off. Between the software and a proper system I'm guessing about $4000 just to get close to what I have happening now with Sonar (Production Suite) and my home built system which has currently cost me a little over $2000 total including the X2 upgrade.

That brings up a question I meant to ask earlier... why is it exactly that Cakewalk doesn't cater to Mac users? It seems exactly the type of program that the Mac audio market would LOVE.

Anyway, hope all is well in rainworld. Salud.

Also... posted with line breaks for easy reading courtesy of HTML and a touch of OCD. ;-p

Beeps: yeah Hijack failed on that thing too. It's a tough one. I'm actually pretty good at this stuff believe it or not. I've been doing the computer thing since 1995 and have never had a virus other than the ones I sort of gave myself when I was messing with the hack and crack stuff years ago. LOL!

Paulo: It's so funny you mentioned that. Honest, I was telling my father that at breakfast! I sincerely believe these companies release these things so you buy their stuff to get it off your system. It's kind of funny how things sort of take turns, ya know? This one thing will come out...and people will post all over "this that this and this failed to even see it, but MegaMal took care of it in under 30 seconds!"

Then next month....the same thing happens with another software name...and so on. I really think it's a credible theory. For example, I've used SuperAntiSpyware for a long time. It's really helped me a lot over the years. I was pretty upset it didn't catch this thing. I knew Norton wouldn't catch it but I thought for sure Super would have. The more I read, the more I heard that this Malwarebytes was cleaning it right up. You get a 14 day trial for it...nearly fully operational. The fact that it did help me get rid of it made me fork out $24.95 just because I felt it was worth $24.95 to have this thing take care of even though I didn't have to pay for it. The free version removed it. But to me, it just seems too coincidental that this particular software was the only one people got results out of other than doing this list of 3000 things some IT dude posted up.

Mesh: Thanks....whew, me too. I never got blue screens and auto-reboots before. I've heard of people getting them over the years, but this is the first time I've ever seen that. I had my Windows disc in hand ready to reformat and loaded in my machine...then decided "let's look this up and see if we may be able to do something less evasive." I'm really glad I did because this little net box is set up perfectly for me. Nothing special...little Dell i3, 4 gig of RAM but it's perfect for the net and doing little service jobs. It was so cheap I bought a few of them.

Uggh....ZUNE! Unfortunately, I'm forced to use that as it's the only software that works for my HTC phone to sync up to my computer. I absolutely hate it and have thought about getting a new cell phone because of it. I dig this phone though and well, I'm not one that lives off a cell like most of my friends. It's more my emegergency life-line when I'm out...which I never am other than my studio. But it won't work there anyway. LOL! The property I own for the studio, has a cell tower 300 yards from the property. We knew we'd get some crap from it, but they pay me well to keep it on the property. So I had a technician come in and totally isolate the studio from cell phone signals so you can't get any signal at all. Every phone says "no service".

I actually love that decision because now clients have to go outside, I don't have to hear their conversations or watch them play with their phones while in the studio. I love new technology...but whew...I hate the whole "live from your cell phone" thing. :)

There are limitations and inconsistanies in Windows in as much as DAW software isn't a perfect fit. But we must keep in mind that software wouldn't work without hardware. Every computer maker has it's own build of hardware which is supposed to optimize the performance of Windows-software. Faster, more intuitive, (right), All the Windows software makers think they have the best solution, ( wait for the update), the instructions between the hardware builds and software builds sometimes say something different. The same brand of computer, motherboard, etc. can have different builds over a years time, leaving all the software builders scrambling to match up. So..., is it Windows or the the free-for-all occurring between all the software builders and hardware builders?

You know what? As much as I'd like to see Sonar on OSX (I'd buy it in a blink, even if just as a secondary app and/or to open up my old projects), not only do I understand why Cakewalk don't port Sonar to Mac but I actually commend their decision to stick w/ Windows.

Though wise Jobs at his end knew Gates no less,

Curse, blue, screen with fierce tears of death, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that new mac

We could easily start a rumour that Sonar is being ported to mac.  Feel happier now?

It looks like running Windows was above his skill level. It won't be long until he realizes how proprietary and evil Apple and a big corporation is. Or maybe not. However I wouldn't be surprised to see him wasting ten or more hours standing in line for the next iPhone! I hope he has fun playing with his new Mac and trying to be cool.

I will however point out the shortcomings of Microsoft. Windows sucks. There I said it. Having to keep your OS locked down to keep some fool in Redmond, Washington from getting it pregnant with corporate induced bugs or from contracting some digitally transmitted disease just seems plain stupid. And I won't enter into the conversation of which is a better recording platform. I like Sonar. It's Windows and Microsoft I detest.

There I've said it.....

The OP's reason stated for switching is because of security issues- that's how I read it -correct
me if I'm wrong. It just seems plain stupid to him dealing with it and Microsoft.

What I find stupid is that people will use a computer for the internet that they also use for
personal functions that are important to them and easily have a lot of money invested into it. Now that is stupid IMO and just to bad if it offends anybody...not my intention to offend.

When one uses a cheap machine with free protection for the internet stuff- so what if it gets
infected? Wipe it and start over. If it hit the BIOS and going to be a big hassle...trash it and get
another piece of junk computer to surf. ( junk computers are plenty good enough for that)

One thinking that switching from one to the other will solve the problem the OP stated is rediculous.

Do I worry about infections from the internet? NO. Not one good reason to.
Do I worry about infections from the internet on my recording PC?  NO. It isn't used to surf. Microsoft
is done when I got it and decided to load it/prepare it for recording.
Do I worry about personal information because it's on a PC? NO. If I used one that would
contain personal information it would be set-up for that and that only.

For the record...I practice what I preach and sorry if it seems I'm on a box...
My internet PC is over 8yrs old and has never had an infection. It was originally one of my  recording
PC's and was recently wiped to clean it ...and it has two functions- to handle internet use and mail. It is the only PC in my house that gets mail. (You should know why) ...oh...and music. The second hard
drive is where I copy all my CD's that I like to listen to.

You don't address the internet infection problem by using a PC or Mac. That's just rediculous.
It's simple to address and shouldn't be an issue or concern at all......especially with your recording
unit.

Well it seemed that this effort may help some....especially after some of the statements made...
but it seems "old hat" so maybe it won't.

No reason to elaborate...I fully understand.
Me imagining you getting an infection from updating your banking account balance
is much the same as me switching to a Mac because I got an infection from my bank.
And should I? Well it won't be computers I'd be switching.

And if I ever get a virus on my recording PC because I clicked on a photo...well I just
pull out a guitar and shoot myself in the brainpan.

Hi,

I'm not sure that Windows is the problem ... I think they have improved considerably ... but there are some things in hardware that are downright scary ... and should have been handled before and I still think that this is by agreement, or Microsoft INTENTIONALLY stating that it is not going to allow it.

There is nothing simpler than to take two signals and mix them together as they come though ... but a sound card with Windows, in general does not allow it, and not "record it" ... when it could easily mix them and then record AFTER the mix ... which makes it one signal only.

For all intents and purposes, Microsoft has made the use of their machines with music intentionally more difficult, but musicians, as smart and adaptable as they are can always get around anything, including Microsoft.

It could be said that a Mixer, or something similar would be better and give you better control, but in the end, all that Windows did is make things more difficult. And one of its worst things? ... the little software that they have for their sound cards, is not something that you would buy for your best friend, wife, or child! It's total crap ... and you have to "select" microphone, or this or that ... like it really maters?

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

To all....

This was not meant to be PC vs Mac for recording post. Or about putting my PC on the interweb. Or my departure from the Forum.

Firstly let me state clearly (Bub, no offense here, ok?). My Sonar DAW never saw the outside world of the interweb; or a network for that matter. Period! My issue is that Microsoft Windows OS is prone to having problems introduced by the developers of the OS itself. Sad but true (and Win Vista aside, Win 7 has it's problems too). I've downloaded updates from the Microsoft download site to enable functionality of updates to DAW specific hardware and software and had to deal with unexpected behaviors. I've also had to re-stabalise my system afterwards. The downloads occurred on a properly protected Win 7 machine I use for surfing, then transferred after scanning by way of USB drive.

Secondly, in building a PC for recording there is so much that needs to be done in optimizing the PC to enable recording. It is for me, not the optimum operating system to plug and play. For me Windows sucks, when it comes to recording. When adding additional hardware I have found the need to re-balance and re-stabaliise the OS almost every time . Not acceptable when I'd rather spend my time creating.

I like Sonar PE workflow. That's not the issue. What Cakewalk does is great. Would I like Sonar on Mac, yes. But that is not what my problem is. When I want to be able to create, i don't want to be hindered by the tools I use.

My MacBook works seamlessly with my hardware. Yes I do have antivirus on it as it is susceptible to any UNIX or Mac attacks (not to be confused with a Big Mac Attack). I was trying to be humorous about it. Some take this way too seriously. Reality check !!!

Just because someone likes blueberry muffins over pancakes because it is what works for them does not make it bad. Folks that are using Sonar over Pro Tools have their reasons why. It is the tool that works for them the best.

Windows does not work for me when it comes to recording. Macs have their issues as well. One of them being cost and ease of upgradability. Please don't be fooled by the Mac doesn't have issues crowd.

As for my departing this forum. I won't be. (Sorry Pete. I do miss you, mate. It's been a long time since we have heard from you). I shall be hear (misspelling intended) with the usual sarcasm, dry wit, and feeble insight.

I just see that the opportunity for using a tool that enables creativity for me just happens to be a Mac. It's what works. That's the way of it, right?

Do I worry about infections from the internet? NO. Not one good reason to. Do I worry about infections from the internet on my recording PC? NO. It isn't used to surf. Microsoft

The real issue here, is that not enough people realize that if you are going to use the computer for music, it really needs to be exclusive for that ... and not be influenced by the externals and all the underneath hits and connections that so much software does -- THAT YOU DON'T KNOW about, that eventually interferes with your work ... and causes another pop or interruption ... and Microsoft will NOT give you the option to stop that ... when you are ... let's say ... recording music!

It was believed that the 64-bit systems did not do that, but they do ... !!!! ... so you're paying more ... to help Microsoft hide things even more! But if you think that Apple does not do the same thing, you are mistaken, and wrong, btw!

Well said Doc.

Now can we get back to the battle guys.

Last I heard the score was:

Mac = 3.988768545
P=4.0000000003
