I will not go quietly

We have all seen the rants of those who have determined to use different software for recording rather than staying the course with Cakewalk. And it's usual pointed out some sort of short coming or inability to use the software is the issue.

I shall not point out any shortcomings of the quality software the Bakers at Cakewalk put out. Because I found Sonar to do the job nicely and I sincerely like the workflow and tools. I will however point out the shortcomings of Microsoft. Windows sucks. There I said it. Having to keep your OS locked down to keep some fool in Redmond, Washington from getting it pregnant with corporate induced bugs or from contracting some digitally transmitted disease just seems plain stupid. It has brought me to a crossroads where I have finally had to decide on a direction to go when upgrading to new hardware.

Dare I say it? I got another Mac. I will however remember fondly the good times I have had with GTP4, Sonar 6,7,8 and X1a, b, c & d. The camaraderie and help of those here on Forum. But I just can't go through another new build and optimization of a PC for recording only to lock the machine away as if I am locking a fair maiden up for the duration of her life. I like loading drivers, plugging in my hardware and it all working without any system tweaks.

It would be wonderful to have Sonar on Mac. But alas this is not so in the present day. (Forget Parallels it hinders the performance of the software). So I move on to say fair thee well Sonar. It was good knowing you and work with you. But never more shall I be hindered by the Evil Empire known as Microsoft.

And I won't enter into the conversation of which is a better recording platform. I like Sonar. It's Windows and Microsoft I detest.

There I've said it.....

Cheers to the Bakers for a job well done and wonderful support that I have received when I needed help I couldn't find on the forum.

Welcome to the other side. Hope your journey there is as trouble-free as mine has been for the last 2 years. ;)

Now, may I suggest you get your flame suit ready?

PS - The community here is terrific - unless you get on a mission to try and convert everyone to Mac and tell them Windows sucks. Let's face it, thousands and thousands of people make some incredible music on Windows using Sonar and other apps every day - proof that it does work.

I too stepped off the Windoze train a while ago. I'd have needed a new computer to run any of the X versions of Sonar. Not going through that hassle. I'd been using Macs for various other things and have longed loved the simplicity of everything working without having to muck around in the Registry or worry about UAC, viruses and all the other Winbox hassles. And besides, who really needs to be swapping out processor chips at will? If you've got a stable platform there's no need to do that. I know there are Winbox users that tout that feature but come on - do you really do that on a regular basis (like every year or what)? And yes if you have the tech ability it can be and has been done on a Mac.

Have always loved the Cakewalk product (Project 5, Sonars 3, 5 and 8.3.1). It's just a shame Cake won't develop it for the Mac when they do so many other things on OSX.

    Take care Doc.

I wonder why Cakewalk officially endorses leaving our Windows DAWs on the interweb when it makes realizations such as you have had so likely.

If you run Windows on the interweb you probably should do the Windows updates.

If you run a DAW you should probably get it tweaked up and running smooth and then never do any more Windows updates.

I hope you have fun with your new DAW.

    best regards,

What's up Doc ... hoohoo hoohoo hoohoo!

You could have avoided all of that 7 paragraph/sentence post and many moons of frustration if you would have simply used your digital audio workstation as ... now follow me on this ... a digital audio workstation.

And the funny thing is, now you will end up doing what you should have been doing all along by having multiple computers in your house. One for exploring the underbelly of the web, and the other for recording music.

It's very well established that a DAW should not be used for surfing the web ... so blaming Microsoft for your web related troubles isn't really a valid excuse for hopping on the Mac train.

But anyway ... have fun and ban-voy-aggie!

I like it when you are around.

I just thought I'd mention I get great low-latency performance, 100% reliability and stability on Windows (and I mean 100%), I haven't suffered the effects of a virus for the best part of 10 years, and I'm permanently connected to the internet with a music computer that absolutely rocks with a 2600k chip which I can drop a 3770k chip in if I fancy a mid-life upgrade at some point.

I'm glad you have at least one music package you can take with you without having to buy it again in order to run it natively on your new OS though...

Hope we still see you around.

"“The growing evidence of financially-motivated criminals looking at Apple Macs as well as Windows as a market for their activities, is not good news — especially as so many Mac users currently have no anti-malware protection in place at all,” said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at U.K-based Sophos, in a blog entry Thursday."

I have to agree with Doc on this one. I have to say I really love my Windows recording pc's and can't see me using my mac for that....I'm not crazy about Mac anyway. But last night...I got hit by the worst virus I've ever had and I'm ready to switch to my mac just for surfing because I keep my DAWS off the net.

Check this out....I wasn't even looking at porn or anything bad....honest! Me and my singer were on the phone discussing a new logo for our Van Halen tribute band. We were looking at logo's people had created. I click on a picture and the next thing you know, my pc reboots all by itself. I knew that was trouble right there because I've never experienced anything like that.

Long story short, this thing is a massive virus that gets picked up, but doesn't get removed without doing 3000 things to your machine. Norton missed it, AVG missed it, SuperAntiSpyware missed it, TDSSKiller found it and said it removed it but it came back. Windows Malicious Spyware tool found it and said it removed it partially, but it was still there. I finally got rid of it with some registry stuff and Malwarebytes got the rest of it. A picture of a Van Halen logo...I just can't believe it.

Anyway, the file this thing creates that wreaks havoc is svhost.exe. Yes, I know we have one of these...but it should not turn up in your C:/Windows folder with a date of today or last week etc. The real file is in Win sys 32 I believe and is 27kb. This other thing is 20 kb and owns up to a file called winrsmcde I believe it is. If you happen to find this thing on your box, and you do any online banking or store any personal info on your machine, go offline, change all your passwords and get this thing off your machine. It sends information to ip's anywhere from Romania to Virginia. What sucks is, you won't even know it's there until you notice your pc is slowing down and you see this huge spike in your cpu. Then of course, just about every major program you open will create a blue screen, do a crash dump and then reboot. It's nasty...so please check if you have it. Nasty root kit pihlar backdoor thing. Ugggh! I can't believe the people at MS can't put an end to this virus and malware stuff.

Hey, Danny. Have you ever tried HiJackThis for malware/virus removal? It's the most effective for getting rid of super stubborn viruses. It's not automatic like the rest. You get right in there and remove the critters. You have to know what you are looking for though because it scans and displays every process on your system. If you aren't sure you can post the log file to the HiJackThis forums and they'll tell what to remove and what to leave. You'd be surprised what kind of gack it'll find that's been missed by other AVs and spyware removal tools. Best to do it in safe mode and be absolutely sure you aren't removing something that the system needs but it also provides a general description of all the entries so you can get an idea of what's what. It's free on CNET. Hope you've been well. Cheers.

Oh and Danny... Norton sucks these days. Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials are the way to go for free AVs. Kapersky is supposedly one of the few paid AVs worth its salt but I've never used it.

I can't believe the people at MS can't put an end to this virus and malware stuff.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist I happen to think that many of them are created by the very people who want to sell you the security software. The natural cynic in me always suspected this, but I did some work for a guy last year who had just got a job for one of them, having previously worked for another and was asked at the interview if he had ever knowingly created / spread malware and put it out there and his answer was - of course I have - you do know where I used to work ? He got the job, so I guess that says a lot. FWIW he says that in all the tests he has ever done, which is part of his job, none are foolproof and some are better at certain things than others, but Eset (not who he works for) is the best overall and tge one he uses for his personal PCs. I have no idea if this is right, but I have had no problems (that I know of) since I installed it on my internet PC, whereas I did get the odd relatively harmless spyware with AVG.  As for internet banking........well personally I think that's just asking for trouble anyway and many people will only realise how much trouble when they close all the actual banks because they will be deemed unnecessary and expensive and it all has to be done online and everyone is totally at the mercy of online customer service. Hopefully not in my lifetime, but a totally cashless system seems to be what they are all striving for.

I have picked up a few viruses but I have only myself to blame there, like Bub said it is best not to go surfing anywhere on a DAW, of course regular software updates pretty much require me to be plugged in at some point. The thing is people regularly get frustrated with macs too, maybe not always for the same reasons but the day will come.....if it's a computer of any kind it will give you some kind of a fit during its life.....job security for a lot of people.

A lot of the problems with computers cause a lot of frustration on a regular basis but I think it is the can do or can ask attitude that will prevail in most any situation. I have had some doozies and managed to get through all of them and life goes on.

I would definitely upgrade from Vista.Probably one of the worst things windows made in awhile. Instead of burning the computer or throwing it in the river walk away from it for awhile, it works for me at least. My problems with Win7 64 have been very few and far inbetween and mostly self imposed.

Is it really true that none of the scum of the earth ever bother to write viruseses for mac or is that just a myth put about by mac users because they're to embarrassed to admit their computer is full of viruses?
In my 2 years on Mac, there was one serious threat, last winter.

So, one one hand, yes, many Mac users seem over-confident that there's no risk and don't protect their machine. On the other hand, when there's a new threat on Mac, I seem to find out quicker as the communication w/in the community is more efficient, because you're not always in alert mode...

On Windows, there are so many threats that I'd sometimes read about a new virus here on this forum, and then another one through a friend at work, and then some I'd simply never hear about until I did some research. The info is out there, but there's so much of it...

Oh and I know I say this all the time but using Firefox (yes I know it sucks for this forum but you can use IE tab for FF or Chrome here) with AdBlockPlus and NoScript stops a lot that crap before it even gets a chance to hit your system. ABP just works non intrusively but with NoScript you have to fiddle with it a bit but that's good. It makes it so you can see all the crap a website is trying load onto your system. About 95% of it isn't needed to view the webpages and a large amount of it, particularly on sketchier sites, spies on you and installs nastiness. Usually you just have to allow the host domain and you have full access to everything you want. With streaming sites like youtube and soundcloud you usually have to allow the domain where the actual vids are streaming from as well (for youtube it is ytimg.com for example). Some sites will only have a couple extra domains trying to load but others will have a list of twenty or more external sites all trying to clamor onto your system. Mostly adservices and analytic sites (like google analytics which sends your browsing habits back to google and is unnecessary... but there are far more malicious ones than google doing the same thing). Many times the operators of the main site have no control over what these other sites are doing. They get their little kickback or whatever and the other services do what they want. A good example is with ad services who get paid to toss their clients ads all over the place but don't test the content and viruses/malware/spyware can slip through. Because you are dealing with three or more companies (sometimes MANY more) there is absolutely no accountability. This is one more reason I like this forum. There are a couple of analytics thingies (google analytics and ownerIQ) that try to load but that's it and all I need to do is allow the cakewalk domain and I can use the site without that crap. Also all the ads on here come from Cakewalk themselves (as far as I've seen) so there isn't this layer upon layer of shady internet businesses getting access to my system. Anyway... super boring stuff but it's good to know ESPECIALLY if you are putting critical systems like a DAW on line. Just thought I'd toss that out there for everyone while I'm taking a little break from my current noise experiment. Cheers.

    Or use a Mac. ;)

Sorry Beepster, you know I appreciate you and that's some sound advice in there, but I couldn't help but smile - I just felt like, graphically,  this was a perfect illustration of the PC/Mac thing. A dense paragraph, w/ lots of (valid) instructions and no line break (and I know it's a forum issue, not your fault) vs a single line w/ one instruction.

For all the years I've spent on the PC, I can't say that I've been bothered w/ virus all that much. But I've certainly had to be in tech-mode for whatever reason on a much more regular basis.
