ISSUE: Audio folder is "read only" for Save As
This issue just started happening for me: when I try to do a "Save As" I get the following error: "The specified folder is read only ... '(audio folder)'... Please choose a different folder" Has anyone else seen this? I'm thinking it must be a Windows-related issue because it is still present when I rollback from 2017.01 to 2016.12, and I certainly was not seeing it before. I tried changing the folder attributes from Read Only, but the issue persists. Luckily I can do a regular "save" but I like to manually control my version numbering with information in the file name. What is interesting is that a search on Google revealed the exact same issue in 2009, and it happened to be with Sonar. Try running Sonar as administrator.

Nope, it didn't work. But it was a good idea, and I appreciate the suggestion. I have tried all the Take Ownership and Advanced Properties on this folder but to no avail. Weird.

Right click the folder and uncheck Read Only. Is the folder on your OS drive? Sometimes this is a Windows issue with folder permissions.

Can your "save as" to a different drive or USB drive?
If so then this is a Windows issue and not Sonar.
If no then it's got to be Sonar.

If no then it's got to be Sonar.
I was able to save to a different folder, but as soon as I tried another "save as" within that new folder I got the same error. I'm sure it's a windows issue but I've no idea why. All my other folders work fine. This one was working fine until today.

At least, I can't think of any reason why Sonar might ever have been given the ability to change folder access permissions. Windows once in a while seems to attach "system" flags to folders based on what it thinks are in them, which may be what's happening, If it is the usual "properties" dialogue window isn't the way to deal with the problem, nor does is always work even if it's supposed to.

Generally Windows is pretty accurate at describing a folder as read only, which is not an issue with ownership as such but with permissions. Run as administrator solves ownership problems in some cases, but will not affect a read only issue unless the read permission is limited to or includes the hidden administrator account. What version of Windows is in use? The general solution is as previously mentioned to change the folder properties from read only is to navigate to the folder in question, right click properties to reveal the properties menu and then select the security tab and grant read and write permissions (or full access) to the users required. All users works for everyone, otherwise the ability to read and write is limited to the groups/accounts listed. Sonar inherits its permissions from the account you are logged into when you start SONAR, or if you run SONAR as an administrator then it has only the permissions of the hidden administrator account (which is not the same as a named account that is a member of the Administrators Group). If you run Windows under an account that is a member of the Administrators Group, then that group (or Everyone or the particular account name) must have the permissions. If you are running Windows from a NAME account, then NAME (or everyone or the group to which NAME belongs) must have the necessary permissions on the folder. SONAR requires at least read and write access in order to change anything that has been saved.
Long story short, find out what account you are using to run SONAR, find out what folder SONAR is using, find out what the permissions that account has in the folder SONAR is using under the security tab, and make sure that full control is granted to the account you are running.

I blame Windows 10 as I get this, or similar no permition error, all the time, not just, if at all, with Sonar. Especially when dragging a file or Saving As to a different folder. Most obnoxiously annoying to have to save it somewhere else and then move it where I want afterward. Never had either issue in Windows 7 or prior.

This is almost certainly a Windows issue, and one that has affected a number of folks. If you do a search for "Read Only Folder Permissions" you will find a number of articles on the cause (being traced back to how Windows does file and folder permissions/security). You will likely have to go into the permissions for the 'C' drive and through the 'properties' take full control of the folders. Then you can change folders from Read Only. There are a number of good articles on the net with the specifics. I had to do this a while back.

Thanks Craig et al, I will try these suggestions. I'm swamped with other work things but will tackle this when I have a proper moment to do so, and with patience. I've never had such a weird thing happen with permissions/folder attributes that I wasn't able to quickly solve before. Given that this occurred "out of the blue" without any other updates I can't explain it. Will report back when I have a chance

Windows 7?
If so - and this may sound silly but I've had this affect my folder behaviour - check that the services "Application Information" and "Application Experience" are running (I forget which one caused me headaches).
