I know "realism" is a key feature in many plugins, but I think that manufacturers of drum libraries and sample software are taking things too far when they do this. I mean, do you really want to put a human drummer out of work by using software that spontaneously combusts? Must the machines replace us in every way?

Beagle I have had hard drives fail before, but never at the exact moment I went to install new memory! I keep replaying it all in my head and can't think of anything I did that might have caused this. Here are a few possibilities: - The drive was already close to failing and the movement of putting the memory in was the last straw - You didn't use a static strap while installing the RAM and managed to zap the drive (instead of the memory or something else) - You accidentally bumped the drives power cable and the inconsistent voltage caused the drive to fail (you DID try other connectors on the board just in case you zapped something on the MB didn't you? You can then swap the boot order in the BIOS is necessary.) - Invisible gremlins created from thin air by Bapu to slow down your posting figured out where you live - You probably shouldn't have "marked" the computer as your own
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

GASP! shocker, I know. I rarely do even though you'd think I'd know better being an EE and all... not likely, but no, I didn't try other power connectors or other SATA cables. I could try that, but I did unplug and replug the SATA cable without luck. very likely the culprit. I suspect bapu in some way. speak for yourself. all rooms have to be marked. it's the first rule of acquisition. well. I may have discovered what happened. the memory I got was not exactly the same parameters as the existing memory. it had a different CAS latency and a different voltage. I thought I had picked the same as before, but until I took the old memory out and checked the part number, I didn't realize it was different. so, I've read of this causing problems with windows getting "out of sync" so to speak. what I believe happened was the memory differences caused windows to think that it was not booting correctly and said that I had an error on the drive in the boot area. so I allowed windows to try to repair itself. that was the mistake. if I had just taken the memory back out at that time and rebooted, I think all would have been well. but since I allowed windows to try to repair itself, it got corrupt at that point because of the mismatched memory. dang - lesson learned. make SURE the memory is correctly matched exactly.

yes, JB, you were spot on in the first post. I had already allowed windows to try to repair itself by the time you replied, tho, so it was already too late. and, as I said, I really honestly thought I had bought the same memory as before, just a different brand. I looked at my invoice from where I bought the memory initially and it said 1.5V CAS 8-8-8-24 and that's what I bought. unfortunately, that's not what I had originally installed. apparently the store entered the code incorrectly when ringing me up and I didn't cross check the acutal memory when I installed it.

I used this just recently to get 8Gb and I just trashed the 4gig 1.65v stick my computer came with. http://www.crucial.com/ Just enter your mobo details or run the system scan and whatever comes up on the list is guaranteed to work or your money back. Make sure too that you populate a whole bank at a time because even the same specification chips will alter slightly over time with different revisions. So if you use dual channel get two at a time and triple channel get 3. The prices for 4Gb chips just now is a steal 8Gb for example cost me just £35

actually I briefly considered upgrading the CPU since it will accept an i7... I think I'll reconsider that and just wait until I need to update the MB again, tho..
