Ice Caverns of Europa

Hi Peeps,

I created my latest tune a bit ago. I had to keep it "under wraps" until the compilation album it has been included on was released.

Ice Caverns of Europa is another ambient drone piece.

I was inspired by my recent Arturia V synth purchases, which included the Modular V, ARP 2600 V, CS-80 V, Jupiter V, Mini V and SEM V. So most of these virtual instruments were included in this piece.

No guitar this time

So, get your pipe and slippers out, and a glass of Shloer, kick back and relax...........

cheers

I recognise those synths sweet, overtones of Vangelis in the feel.
    How about a voice/instrument breakdown???

Nice stuff though the Ping ping voice does get a little irritating I would tend to raise and lower it throughout just to keep the interest.

    Hi Wookiee

What I was hoping for was, as various parts became louder, that the ping pong part would be masked, to a certain degree anyway. But I wanted it to remain for the whole length of the piece. It is supposed to represent, along with the drones, the sounds you could hear in such a vessel that you would travel in to visit those Ice Caves... So the ping pong is a sort of sonar, and the drones are the driving force of the vessel.

All the other sounds are then the wonders that you would see while in this vessel.

To be honest, it is very rare that I approach a composition like this, with a "vision" from the outset.

I specifically stayed away from any breakdown or lead parts so as to try an keep as much to the "ambient" genre as possible, or at least as I understand it. Like any genre, boundaries are pushed and there are lots of grey areas. This track represents what I feel is "ambient" to me, at least

Thanks for listening, I always look forward to your comments. When you use the synths I mention, it is difficult not to sound a little bit like the artists that pioneered those sounds some years ago , so I'm glad you mentioned that.

    cheers

Wow, sounds incredible! I've never been much of a fan of ambient because I'm much too impatient to relax for very long.  This piece, however, held my interest. Really cool stuff!

Hi Kevin, I totally understand why so many peeps feel this way about some music. Even more so in this day and age, when many of us only have time for radio ready short and sweet tracks. Nothing wrong with that, of course, and I, too, have trouble putting time aside to just listen to music, and do nothing else.

This particular track is "only" nine minutes long... Some of the tracks on the same compilation run out at over twenty minutes

So, thanks so much for listening and leaving a comment. I really appreciate that

    cheers

My pleasure. There's no questioning your talent in creating something that sounds so, well, delicious is the only word that comes to mind. By the way, I do dig the ping-pong, I rather like thematic oddities like that. This is really good work, Andy. Thanks for posting it.

Re: Ice Caverns of Europa 2015/10/15 12:25:17 (permalink)
Okay, a sort of abbreviated breakdown of the busses and tracks I used to create Ice Caverns Of Europa:-

Buss A | Master | FX = Pro-Q 2 + Pro-L (and SPAN for keeping an eye on those pesky frequencies)

Buss C | Reverb | FX = Breverb 2 (Cathedral with time set to 7 seconds)

Buss D | Delay L-R | FX = Timeless 2 (Deep Sea set to bounce left then right) | Sends = Reverb

Buss E | Delay R-L | FX = Timeless 2 (Deep Sea set to bounce right then left) | Sends = Reverb

Buss F | Tantra | FX = Tantra (SEQ Stargate, tweaked to suit my needs) Sends = Reverb + Delay L-R + Delay R-L

    Track 1+2 | Drone 1 | CS-80 V2 (Cosmos) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay L-R + Tantra | Pan 20% R | Automation is used to change some parameters

    Track 3+4 | Drone 2 | ARP 2600 V2 (CE_ChromaPad01) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L + Tantra | Pan 20% L | Automation is used to change some parameters

    Track 5+6 | Pad 1 | Jupiter-8 V2 (Bazz_Warm_Pad1) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay L-R | Pan 50% L

    Track 7+8 | Pad 2 | CS-80 V2 (J.M.B_Classic_saw) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan 50% R

    Track 9+10 | Pad 3 | SEM V (TAS_Stringfellow_ST) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan Centre

    Track 11+12 | Bell Centre | Modular V (sinbells) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan Centre

    Track 13+14 | Bell Left | Modular V (sinbells) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan 70% L

    Track 15+16 | Bell Right | Modular V (sinbells) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan 70% R

    Track 17+18 | Bell Low Left | Modular V (sinbells) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay L-R | Pan 80% L

    Track 19+20 | Bell Low Right | Modular V (sinbells) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan 80% R

    Track 21+22 | FX 1 | Mini V (NU_SiFi) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan Centre

    Track 23+24 | FX 2 | ARP 2600 V2 (CP_Bomb) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan 30% L

    Track 25+26 | FX 3 | Modular V2 (RR.OCEAN) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan 30% R

    Track 27+28 | FX 4 | Jupiter-8 V2 (Bazz_Windmachine) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb | Pan 30% L

    Track 29+30 | FX 5 | CS-80 V2 (Helicopter) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan 100% R | Automation is used to sweep pan when effect plays

    Track 31+32 | FX 6 | Modular V2 (ML_FX01) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay L-R | Pan 100% L | Automation is used to sweep pan when effect plays

    Track 33+34 | FX 7 | SEM V (PH_MyIllness_FX) | FX = Pro-Q 2 | Sends = Reverb + Delay R-L | Pan Centre

Note that in the case of this project I only use EQ in the FX bins and all effects are placed in the buss FX bins.

Tantra is used on the drones to add a bit of additional cutoff freq beating.

All instrument and effect presets were tweaked to varying degrees as required.

That was a bit rushed that but is the best I can do in the time that I have.........

    cheers

Thank you Andy much appreciated, nice to see so many Modular V's in there I can remember when I could just about get 1 instant to run.

    Hi Andy,
I imagine you you as a sound wizzard in a strange music laboratory....

Ha! Yeah... On my previous workstation I'd have been freezing stuff all the way! I did have a few problems, but I think they were to do with the VSTi rather than my DAW.

A lovely soundscape, reminds me of early Jarre. I like when the celesta is coloring the harmonies. Maybe, in a 9 min tune, there could be a cavern that differs. Not in harmony but, well... something else!

    I enjoy the listen, thanks!

Lovely stuff Andy. There's so much going on that the 'ping pong' drifted in and out of my attention, so that worked nicely. Congrats on the inclusion on that compilation.

    Hey, Andy,

This is a very cool sounding, atmospheric piece with lots of interesting elements woven throughout, great synth choices and a crystal clear, well textured mix!

Very relaxing and soothing, and I can easily imagine this as a cinematic background track to a science fiction movie or even a documentary of some sort.

Very nice work, Andy, and sincere best wishes, my friend!

    Hi Lasse

I know what you mean, and I could have added more bits and pieces for sure, but I tend to get to a point where I just want to hit the "upload" button and get it out there .

Thanks for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed it

    Hi James

What's going on in the Nettlesmith camp? It's all gone a bit quiet over there at the moment... Are you taking your work on the road yet?
