I wonder why they have Pace at all involved with a free plugin. Its sort of like a virus in this case. I don't have it but I was quick to stop it on install. What of others that didn't see it? This is not good practice. Very poor public relations.

True, but not surprising coming from the same company that packages a "free 2x2 MIDI interface" with its commercial soft synth (Proteus X2), but doesn't mention that the interface is actually a dongle that must be installed in order for the synth to work. That's a pretty underhanded way to sell products and, because of that, I will never purchase another E-mu product until Creative is out of the picture.

I wasn't aware of that and I agree with you in both your distaste and view. Not a well thought way to deal with customers.

Chrisma, I went to check out digitalsoundfactory.com for the free Proteus VX soundbanks and couldn't find them.. Any clues as to where I might find them on the site?

Yeah it's not quit obvious. It's under "Download Free Soundfont Banks". Mentions nothing about ProteusX formats. The EMU-X format is the Proteux format.

I wasn't referring to the free Proteus VX, I'm talking about the for-purchase Proteus X2, which requires the MIDI interface dongle, not PACE.

This thing is not ready for prime time, not even beta-ready IMO. Already uninstalled it.

Guys, thanks for the warnings!

1) Admit you have a problem and are powerless against your plugin foes. 2) Face it one day at a time. 3) Never download something that resembles something you already have. 4) Keep telling yourself "Nothing free doesn't have some price to pay". 5) Ask yourself, "Have any animals been abused or harmed in the development of this product?". 6) Refer to Step One. 7) Apologize to any clients whose projects might have been compromised by zealous overuse of plugins. 8) Make amends to those clients by offering your services for free to undo the damages. 9) If the addiction to plugins created a financial burden, get a part-time job working nights as a convenience store clerk. 10) Refer to Step One. 11) Buy a Tascam Porta-Studio and vow to use it exclusively for the next six months. 12) Inform your ISP that you no longer wish to remain connected to the internet.

LOL. I should print this out and have it laminated.

With all the cons said in this thread about the UVI Workstation, I'd like to mention something possitive about it. Of all the freebees brought to our attention recently in this forum, this is the only sampler that alows for the import of our own audio files in common format (such as .wav, rex2, and Apple Loop files!).

Hey, that's something!

Most of the sounds in the demo pack are of poor quality, but I like it more than all the rest of the freebies because I can import .wav files and rex loops.

Yet, somehow, it seems like anything imported sounds of poor quality. (Edit: I just needed to play around with the FX section) It's nice for a freebee, and it alows for the import of common file formats.

So. of what I downloaed of these freebees I rate as follows:

1) Independece free I'm going to buy Independence Basic next month. It will have me OK until I decide which Big time sampler to buy. It's gonna be a choice among Kontakt 3, Independence Pro, and Emulator X3. :)

2) UVI Workstation I like it because it's the only freebie I know of, that allows for the import of common file formats :)

3) Proteus VX One day the Stand Alone just started working for me hehe but the sounds in this thing can't touch Independence Free!

4) I didn't download the Kore Player or whatever it's called.

UVI Workstation is a lot of fun. That PACE stuff is a bit funky, but it doesn't seem to bother my system. I don't use the sounds that come with the download, since I think they're not so great. UVI Workstation works great with my collection of REX-files though.. and I can easily layer drums by inserting simple one shots as well. The screen tends to get a bit clustered when I have a lot of stuff going on, but all in all it's a fun piece of software,

This is a public beta. It will probably time-out. I think it is a good idea to make sure you bounce/freeze any tracks that you use in "real" projects.

The production version is now available, still free. Regards, lightninrick

Hello - I am using HS6XL and Windows XP. After reading your post I downloaded the UVI workstation which appears to download okay with the files intact, but when I try to open it as a standalone, I get one of those generic error messages about it not being able to open, that asks whether I want to send the error to Microsoft or not!

In terms of using it from within my program, as my HS is loading, the initial scanning screen shows it as if the HS has adeuately recognized and loaded it in - but it does not appear on the vst list or as a synth? I must be making some dumb mistake here, wondering if you might help. I wrote to the tech people on the site, and their response was kind of lame and offered no relief so far.

Thanks

Hello: Just wondering if you have any comment from my post (of 10/8) about the problems I am having with the UVI workstation?

Thanks

First, have you asked the people who make UVI wheher they have any ideas?

Second, try setting up a different VST plugins folder for this plugin, and telling home Studio to scan that folder too. That works sometimes for me when I have a lot of plugins in my folder.

Finally, if you have a lot of plugins already, try eliminating some of the ones you rarely use and re-scan.

I have no idea why the standalone is blowing up on you. Perhaps you should try re-downloading and re-installing. The UVI workstation just went from beta to production--it's possible that if have the beta installed, it's timed out or something.

Interesting you mention clearing out some VSTs - I have been thinking about doing that lately since I have too many that are rarely used. I think sometimes we become vst "junkies" and grab up as many as we can thinking this one or that one will make the difference ! I dd contact the tech people at the company once and the response was kind of general and did not work. I like your idea of setting up a new folder and then having my DAW scan it specifically..will try that today. Has any reader out there used the UVI workstation and have feedback?
