If you want a much better free synth than Proteus...

Download the free UVI workstation from Plugsound at:
http://www.ultimatesoundbank.com

The Rhodes patch alone is worth the time it takes to download the thing.

Oh, and don't forget the Kore Player from Native Instruments. It's great sounding, ships with 300 MB of patches, and you can expand it with soundsets that run from about $60-$70 apiece.

    Hehehe. Me too.
I even swore off all-things-EMU, and downloaded that earlier today (I'm happy that it removes the dongle restriction, so I'll give it a try as a replacement for Proteus X2).

Might as well go get Independence Free while I'm at it.

You know... everybody else is doing it, so...
    (first one's free, right?)

yep , it's good to a point.. I guess it's a way to get people to buy the full products / engines to make them far more tweakable.

I guess makers are realising its a good way to make sales, via expansion packs and well we have far less to spend these days.

For all those that are forced to work in Pro Tools, you can get Structure FREE. The cool part of Structure, is it allows you to use your unencrypted Kontakt library.

I downloaded these within days of each other.

    • Proteus VX (largest patch selection 1027 but limited tweak-ability)
    • Kore Player (good sound but only 55 patches and some limited tweak-ability)
    • Independence Free (Large high quality sounds but very limited patch count for 3gb)
    • UVI workstation (nearly 100 patches and very tweak-able)

Each is very usable and a literal steal at the price.

http://www.uvisoundsource.com/ Downloading the UVI Workstation but I notice the SoundBank say's Demo?

Downloaded the Independent Free and a few sound banks, I'll get around to downloading the other s/banks later.

I tried downloading the Kore Player but got an error message. (I will try again later)

    Ya,

A veritable wealth of 'proprietary' sound library dispensers!

The trouble with good ol' standard .wavs and .aiffs is they're rubbish for repeat business I guess.

Still, not to be sniffed at, the Proteus stands out on its own as a 90's retro sound, and Independence has got some groovy midi tools built in, but enough already, I've just had to to loads of house-keeping on my hard disks to fit all this stuff on...

I'll get all my completed projects archived at this rate...

UVI Workstation will install PACE on your PC. Maybe that's not a big deal anymore, I dunno. In the past it seems it was something that many liked to avoid. My daw has been so solid for me that I decided to skip this freebie because of the PACE factor.

Before installing it, as I always do I made a System Restore point. As soon as Zone alarm notified me that the installer wanted to download PACE, I pulled the plug on the install. I then uninstalled what had made it to my machine and did a registry roll back. I don't care if PACE isn't currently causing problems, because it will at some point in the future. I don't need that virus on my machine.

well the install on it's own is 65-70mb ? that only comes with a few sounds, so I guess the extra pack is needed. 415 or whatever mb of it

I downloaded it, and installed it, but didn't like the included sounds or the fact that you have to have Ilok to use any new sounds, and I'm very afraid of pace. I uninstalled after a few minutes, but is there any way to know for sure if I got rid of Pace? Thanks!

Well, I found this info surfing:

Pace installs the following Registry key trees:
    HKEY/LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Enum/LEGACY_TPKD/
    HKEY/LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet002/Enum/LEGACY_TPKD/
    HKEY/LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/TPKD/
    HKEY/LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/LEGACY_TPKD/

    There may be more.

If you don't see any of the above, you're probably ok. I honestly don't know it's still a problem or not, but it had the potential in the past to really mess some people's systems up.

    1) Admit you have a problem and are powerless against your plugin foes.
    2) Face it one day at a time.
    3) Never download something that resembles something you already have.
    4) Keep telling yourself "Nothing free doesn't have some price to pay".
    5) Ask yourself, "Have any animals been abused or harmed in the development of this product?".
    6) Refer to Step One.
    7) Apologize to any clients whose projects might have been compromised by zealous overuse of plugins.
    8) Make amends to those clients by offering your services for free to undo the damages.
    9) If the addiction to plugins created a financial burden, get a part-time job working nights as a convenience store clerk.
    10) Refer to Step One.
    11) Buy a Tascam Porta-Studio and vow to use it exclusively for the next six months.
    12) Inform your ISP that you no longer wish to remain connected to the internet.

    That should do it!

If I have the Komplete bundle is there anything worthwhile in the Kore package?

Download the free UVI workstation from Plugsound at:
    http://www.ultimatesoundbank.com

The Rhodes patch alone is worth the time it takes to download the thing.

Oh, and don't forget the Kore Player from Native Instruments. It's great sounding, ships with 300 MB of patches, and you can expand it with soundsets that run from about $60-$70 apiece.

This is a public beta. It will probably time-out. I think it is a good idea to make sure you bounce/freeze any tracks that you use in "real" projects.

One is a bunch of classic synths and the other is samples from all of the Proteus libraries.
