I'm a lot less stressed. :-)

We started recording 2 songs on Wednesday and finished the mixing today.

Here's some pics of the the band and I in the new room in it's unfinished state with my "portable" rig:

There were 5 more singers who tracked over dubs but I didn't get a chance to take a photo with them.

Good times.

best regards,
mike

Do you have another Karyn on your hands there?  "Manatee Firearms???"  Yikes!

Looks like you've made the best of that area there Mike.  Do you have enough ventilation?  Looks like it could get warm in summer...

The old guy is me... although I think I must look older than I am.

I've had gray hair since I was 13.

I'm looking forward to having some public links of the music to share with you. The band seemed to have something really special going on and the way they worked together so well was very impressive to me.

I haven't been this excited about a project in a long time.

all the best,

That's a cool Studio Mike and I'm glad it's working for ya! Congrats on the first production!

just one question tho, are you planning to have your desk a little to the side? I'm thinking, since you're so lucky to have a symetrical room, wouldn't it be nice to have everything in the centre? Probably not a big deal, I'm guessing the walls aren't too reflective.

So what remains to do before it's finished?

Re:I'm a lot less stressed. :-) 2012/05/14 08:39:12 (permalink)
The speakers and listening position are more or less on the center axis. It's the desk that is offset.

I generally prefer to use the speakers further back in a bigger room... but this new room is so small I'll use the near field approach to minimize the room.

I placed some chunks of rock wool in each corner for starters and I kept the listening levels at 83-86 dBSPL.

Finish work for the room includes painting the walls, having a mini split HVAC installed, installing flooring, and finally finish carpentry.

I have half finished the "window". We cut the hole in the wall and framed it out using standard practices. I've built a custom window frame which is beveled to hold 2 glass panes so that each is slanted downwards towards their side. I have to install the frame and install the glass etc. That will end up being part of the finish carpentry phase.

I'll get a lot more rock wool and build 24"x24" x a-suitable-height bass trap columns for each of the 4 corners. I'll decorate them with some sort of fabric cover.

Then I'll break out the RTA and see what I have to work with.

For this project, I simply sucked it up and and mixed it like a record.

It was a challenging mix... we had 8 voices in the chorus and refrain and it was a real challenge to find a place for each one.

The band was great... they were very effective at considering changes and then remaining patient as we worked together to realize what they had imagined.

They had inquired with me about working on their stuff and I just sort of went about my remodel stuff because that had to happen as well... then it all came together and it turned out we were behind on the remodel schedule, so I just moved in for a while and we'll get back to work on the room in another week or so.

best regards,
mike

You're missing the point. It messes with Mrs. McQ's head on movie night.

The stylist?

If that's what you mean then I agree she gets consistent results.  I'm not sure if 'right' is the correct word in that context though.

(see what I did there with the deliberate misunderstanding?)

ya... I'm still learning.

This was one of those gigs where I explained to the band that I have Pro Tools Native running but that I prefer to work in SONAR.

At some point during the mix when I was doing some comping and effects patching, one of the guys exclaimed something like "Wow, I see what you mean; you can't work this fast in the other DAW".

3 days tracking at 64 sample buffer and 2 days mixing at 512 sample buffer without a single glitch.

Good times.

Other DAW?

Reaper?

Studio One Two (Three)?

Why "other" DAW? Aren't they all standardized like how you can use bicycle parts on a drum stand?
