In The Bleak Midwinter

My favourite Christmas carol, this has one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard

IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER

This is the first time I've ever tried anything quite like this, so as usual, any comments and advice on any aspect of this instrumental will be gratefully received.

The words, if you want to sing along (including omitted verse):

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, Whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, Whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

    Wow, you go Steve! This is definitely different! Really beautiful melody...great orchestration...I can so hear this on one of those Christmas TV shows...impressive! I saw words....I started thinking...."omg, he's gonna sing too?" I could hear Julie or Bub singing on this one. Two strong, incredible voices....hmm...there's an idea...a duet! *Shuttup Danny* I can hear it now. LOL! This was quite awesome Steve...nicely done on everything...no crits from my wordy, picky arse...spot on great song matey!

    Not what I expected from you, not at all...

    And Winter doesn't begin until the 21st? A shade under 2 weeks away. It's still fall!! But it feels like winter?

    I listened all the way through? I did enjoy it, but I would say, for a classical piece like this? There needs to be more counter point... i.e., if the strings are carrying the lead (as they were) then you need the winds to carry a counter point? And the brass another? Orchestra is "non-trivial..." And it is not undertaken without tremendous commitment, skill and talent. Please do not conclude that I consider myself committed, skilled, or talented in this area? I'm just saying... We all make music? All of us... But to do the orchestra? Well. It's non-trivial. It's not Bass, Drums, Guitar and vocals? The orchestra "breathes?" The orchestra is quiet? And then it's not? The orchestra has melodies, and counter point? Things come in? Things go out? The orchestra is non-trivial... Not that anything we do is? But the orchestra is "non-trivial..."

    All you need is love, just ask the Beatles?

    Interesting take, I second the duet on the vocal, (or is it a third?).

    I liked the instrument changes throughout. Good job Steve.

    I enjoyed the arrangement although there was one nagging problem throughout - the piano (and the organ) have instant/fast attacks whereas the strings take a fraction of a second longer to reach audible volume so I kept hearing the piano leading the strings by that fraction of a second.

    Apart from that minor thing though, I really enjoyed it.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    Steve, I have listened to several songs this AM (in the forum) this is the only one that made me lay back and close my eyes. It is very pleasing. I like the words too. It seemed like the backing piano around 1:14 could be a wee bit louder. I listened through AKG-240s and I'm glad I did, thanks! BTW, I am glad you didn't scare me with a loud guitar in the middle when you had me in a semi-trace..

    Merry Christmas to you.

    Hey Steve,
    I didn't know you could play anything that didn't have a DISTORTION pedal.
    This is one of my FAVS.  I really enjoyed your performance very smooth.  WONDERFUL cover!

    P.S. Hint on your next song . . . piano + distortion pedal.  Think about it .

    Thanks Terry, I appreciate your comments and I agree completely with what you say about the attack of the keys. I'm picking up this stuff as I go along so that's definitely something to add to my to-learn list.

    Many thanks Greg and Robert - there are a couple of completely different arrangements to this carol, and I believe the music to this version was written by Gustav Holst.

    Hi, Steve,

    Wonderful job on this beautiful carol!

    The arrangement and orchestration were excellent, and I really loved the pipe organ at around 1:25, very authentic sounding.

    Nicely done, fantastic job, my friend!
