Songs that make you want to vomit.

Wow, there's a challenge.  How does one edit down such an unweildy list?  But as I don't listen to much pop on the radio (KFOG in San Francisco only, and that on a limited basis), I'm probably sheilded from the worst of it.  Nevertheless, for me top honors goes to Little Drummer Boy (just about any arrangement/performance ever done).  Also right up there (for me ... and I know this will offend some) is pretty much anything sung by Frank Sinatra.  Well, OK maybe not vomit, but it is guaranteed to make my flesh crawl.

Of course we should all rejoice in one thing.  Those of us of a certain age will remember a time when we'd get into an elevator or go into a supermarket and be forced to listen to arrangements performed by the 1001 Strings.  Nowadays (at least in Northern California), I go into Safeway and hear Neil Young and even Pink Floyd!

That's Dan Hill, but I can see how you might think it was Eric Carmen.  I can also see why it might get to you.  It just doesn't affect me so violently.

Nothing Compares 2 U by Snead O'Connor is the first song that comes to mind for inspiring nausea.  For one thing,        it's                           just                         so-o-o-o                           s-s-s-slow.

Elton John's tribute to Diana... barf-o-rama.

Starship's "We Built this City",

Just about anything by Kiss,

the vast majority (if not all) of contemporary christian (that actually elicits projectile vomiting).

Anything by Brian Adams (that elicits thought of sepuku just to get away from it)

Anything by Bruce Springsteen or Bob Seger - makes me want to close the borders.

I could go on for a very long time.

For some reason I thought it was Eric Carmen (sic). Did not check it out. Obviously I had time to post twice but not time to check once.

Oh what's wrong with you people?  ??

Let's go back a little farther to "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro - how can we forget these hurl-your-oats-vehemently lyrics:

See the tree, how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long - It wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig
Then the first snow came - And she ran out to brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all excited - Slipped and almost hurt herself
And I laughed till I cried
She was always young at heart
Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And it would sure embarrass her
When I came in from workin' late
'Cause I would know
That she'd been sittin' there and cryin'
Over some sad and silly late, late show

And honey, I miss you
And I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could

Trust me - this song sounds worse that it looks!

Especially if someone does "the dance".

My 2nd least favourite song would probably be the sound of my own teeth raking against a chalkboard whilst ice weasels gnaw at my medulla oblongata. But that doesn't come on the radio as much.

This would be a perfect occassion to put in a plug for the book Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs.  It's a short set of essays (just over 100 pages, I think) that discusses just what the title says.  I'm not that big a Dave Barry fan (although the column he wrote about his colonoscopy was maybe the single funniest thing I've ever read any time, anywhere).  But this book is totally delightful.  One prerequisite may be that you need to be at least 50 so you'd remember when some of the gems he discusses first hit the airwaves.  Highly recommended.  Very cheap used copied available from amazon.com as well.

Yes, I just love the z-stores.  I buy most of my CDs and books that way.  A lot of music I buy is fairly obscure contemporary "classical" music that has a retail price that's just too high for something I might only listen to once.  The z-stores make experimentation a whole lot easier.  And on top of the great prices, there's the convenient (possibly evil) feature buy-with-one-click.  What's not to love?

By the way, your new picture is very nice.

Cheers,

I've never heard them called z-stores, but I know what you mean.  I buy all my Bastien piano books (for students) there too...usually for 1 cent.  I realize they're making money in the shipping. :-)  Then I turn around and sell books I no longer want--usually just making a buck or two on the shipping, but that's better than giving them away.  And yeah...one-click check out.  Can't beat that, either!

And thank you.  It's not at all what I had in mind for the inside cover of my CD, but that's the only one that turned out half decent.  lol

OK, it turns out I'm behind the times and incorrect as well.  The secondary sellers used to be called z-shops, not z-stores.  But that term was apparently retired at some point, and now I believe the secondary sellers are collectively designated the amazon marketplace.

Good stuff, guys.  I especially agree on:

"Sometimes When We Touch"
Sir Elton's Diana tribute
"Stand"
"We Build This City"

I'll see you and raise you:

  • "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton
  • "Beautiful" by Chrissie Aguilera
  • "The Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston
  • Anything from Mariah Carey's first album.  Her subsequent offerings are mercifully easy to tune out by comparison.
  • "Lookin' Out for Love" by Fleetwood Mac

Yeah Jessie I was watching a Fleetwood Mac documentary on BBC TV last week, including recent interviews with many of the various FM band members. That particular number always disturbs me due to what I consider to be a strangely manic vocal from Lindsay Buckingham, the documentary sort of covered the possible reasons that might have been at the time. He seems a lot more grounded nowadays with his young family thankfully

Any song by Souldia Boy tell'em make me furious. I also hate the Lipgloss song even if the beat is ok. Goa trance always get me in a bad mood as well. Simon & Garfunkel's Hello Darkness my old Friend always make me want to kill myself even though I think it's a great song. There's also a Swedish rapper called Promoe that has made a totally throw-uppy song called Svennebanan that's basically a mockery of everyone that's not a hipocritcal self proclaimed world saver, vegan with dread locks that never washes his clothes and with a safe and secure middle class background like himself (most his songs are crap by the way, I'd rather listen to white power hate music than his hipocritical trash).
