nice Janet!

you've REALLY improved on drums!    (there's one small percussion piece I don't care for, but that's personal taste).  I was also "less impressed" with the section starting at 0:58 thru 1:10.  I see what you were going for here and it's OK, but something about that woodwind solo without anything else but drums sounds too "bare" to me.  I might leave a minimal strings or piano underlying that section.

but those are minor nitpicks and are certainly personal taste and don't have to be changed due to my input.  the song is fantastic as it is and mixed really well, IMO.

Thank you, Charlie!  It's good to see YOU around!  Gone are the days when I dominate page 1, but I still try to do one now and then. :)  Hope you're doing great!

Thanks Reece. :)   I've improved on drums?!  Well, this is a preset deal in Storm Drums, so I can't take any credit on that.  Towards the end I started messing with them, etc., but that wasn't hard.  I need to do more though...just got to the point where I was done. I'll check out that part you mentioned.  (or I might just go on to the next piece...and it has words and everything!  Now all I need to do is learn to sing...you'd think after 7 years of working on it....)

Hi Janet,

This is excellent. At first I thought there were a couple of spots where the strings were a bit Staccato but now that I've listened to it a few times, it sounds perfect the way it is. I really struggle with strings, I love them, and obsess over trying to make them sound as real as possible in my songs, so I kind of have a bad habit of tuning in to them. :-)

This is an excellent song and an excellent mix!

Thanks,

Bub.

Thank you, Bub!  :)  Yeah, the strings could use more work for sure.  Really glad you like it over all.  :)

Those drums sound nice.  Piano is excellent as always.  I like the strings too.  It's really well done but I agree something in there to break it up would be good.  A "spacey lead guitar" or a lead synth part.  I listened to the whole tune and didn't ever feel like quitting.  So..... that's good, right?  :-)  It's almost Christmas, time for JanTracks!

Hi, Janet,

I knew I was going to like this right from the intro, and this is absolutely terrific!

I love the building tension and precision, and how the strong piano plays nicely off of the fresh sounding strings, and I think the drums sound great on this.

Excellent work, Janet, and best wishes for a great Thanksgiving!

This is great work! I love the drama of this piece. The piano sounds really nice with the backdrop. Certainly different from you because it more of an arrangement piece than a piano solo.

Thank you, Warren.  Yeah, a cool guitar solo WOULD sound good, wouldn't it?  I'll have to think about that.

Thank you so much, Bob.  I really appreciate that!  You have a wonderful Thanksgiving too!  :)

Thank you, Vicente.  Glad you liked it.  :)

Hi Janet, very nice playing and arrangement. I liked it a lot. Loved the long piano climb towards the end. Unexpected!

My only comment would be maybe the drums are droning on a little to long. Maybe drop them out around the 1:26 turn around point then bring them back in towards the end for some extra power. Or not! My advice is free because that's usually what it's worth.

Hi Janet...I like the piano sound and your playing...very expressive...my big nit on this is the sound of the string sample...it's a little too calliope sounding...I think a warmer sound would work better (a cello and violin perhaps)...also when the piano drops out around the 1m mark or so and you have the phrases wrapping around, wouldn't it sound nice to have those parts playing by various horns -- say French horn, muted trumpet maybe...have a different horn for each part...just a thought.  Also, you have a very warm recording.

...thanks for the kind words about my song Til Love Steps In.

Janet - I like it.  It's got a great harder driving goove to it.  Different from other projects of yours.  I like those drums.  And all the textures go well with your piano parts.  Nice mix too.

Thank you Allan!  I appreciate the tips.  Maybe I'll have another go at this one after all.  :)

Thank you, Geno!  I was painting my son's office for him today and playing a Bon Jovi Pandora station. At least a song or two came on that you've covered and I thought of you and told him I know a guy that sings at least that well.  Funny you should comment on this tonight.  :)

Great piano playing. Loved the strings. A bass cello would really add to this IMO. Great, though, as is.

Hmmm, thought I'd already commented on this......guess not, anyways....

I liked it better this time around, did you change anything or is it just that it grew on me a bit ? Almost  hip-hop thing goin on there at the beginning - had to check I was listening to the right thing, lol .;)  Observations .......I'd probably slow the tempo slightly overall, feels a little rushed to me and bring in a few different things here and there to add some dynamics / interest as it felt a little .....not exactly repetitious...but kind of once it got going it just stayed there if that makes sense. Best drums that I have heard from you. I do quite like the Storm drum sound in the right place, but as you say, you can hear them everywhere now, but I guess only people like us will know it,  so it doesn't really matter as far as the average listener is concerned.

There's that Janet piano we all know and love. :) Really enjoyed this one. You're diving into some other things now! Pretty cool drum part going on. I remember when you were stumped on how to do these...now you're putting out stuff that sounds really well done! See, told ya you'd get this stuff after a little bit of time invested.

Agree on the string sound like everyone else...but the sound didn't bother me or anything. I can't fault you on the drums because I know that's still a new area for you. But to be honest, nothing really stuck out to me as wrong. A bit more of a "lion chase" type drum effect with a few timps or processed low toms would have worked...but you sort of gave us that really, just not quite as dramatic. I really liked this Janet...to me it's one of your most creative pieces and your production improves with each song. Keep up the great work. :)

Re:Indecision 2012/11/25 11:29:02 (permalink)
Thanks Paulo.  No, this is the same mix.  I got interested in the other song so haven't gone back to this one.  (and now there's another one begging to be written and my shoulder hurts again so....)  I imagine I'll go back to this in a few months and say 'what the heck was I thinking??!! This is so boring!'  And throw everything at it.  But we'll see.  Oh, and Storm Drum...this is a preset.  Absolutely anyone could make them sound this good.  They probably need to be edited a bit more for interest sake, but the basics...that's all the program.  I love it if I can figure out how to play along with their craziness.  :)

Thanks Danny.  I can't remember if the drums inspired the opening riff, or if I had that down then found the drum set to match it.  Anyway, it was sorta fun to do something so different.

Enjoyed this very much Janet.  Only crit which may just be a matter of taste, is that I would have liked the strings to have had a richer-fuller kind of sound.  Coming up with the right string patch is always a pain for me.
