Inserting a Soft Synth in Sonar X1 LE
Hi All, I am trying to insert a Soft Synth in Sonar X1 LE to enable me to play/record using a Midi controller. The massage I get says that the Soft Synth is not installed properly. Can anyone advice me about how I can install this please. Thanks

hi Mike V, There doesn't seem to be any Soft Synths installed at all. Would Soft Synths normally be installed when I installed Sonar X1 LE initially? Thanks

I have X1LE came with my Roland keyboard , haven't opened it in a year or so , but if memory serves me you go to top menu- view and select the synth rack. Then select the + and it will show your sad list of synths. I think you only get 3, I found X1 LE a very poor version of Sonar overall. It came with nothing and it is X1 the worst version in the last 15 years or more. For $50 you would be much better off with Home Studio.

Thanks Cactus Music, I got the X1 with a Roland product I bought so it didn't cost much, but must admit that I'm not impressed. I followed all the instructions to insert a soft synth only to discover that it may not be installed properly. Think I may take your advice and look at Home Studio Best John

Ya , I was going to say there's lots of free VST's too, but the fact still remains that X1 LE is really a bad version and not even close to Home Studio. I think I un installed it last year. I only installed it out of curiosity as I was happy using 8.5 and had been paying attention on the forum here where there was nothing but issues with the X1 version. But the best thing about X1 LE was I registered it and Cake offered me X3 studio for $99! That started me on the el cheapo upgrade path that got me where I am now for probably half price. Not bad for a $130 keyboard that gave me a $100 discount on X3. PS- Hey John,, I'm downloading the EP from Noise Ash, You can never have enough EP's! :) Mr Tramp was my favourite freebie but it's 32 bit so I try not to use it now.

I got tipped off to most of those free instruments via this Groove3 tutorial, where the instructor covers these instruments in the introduction to his tutorial for constructing a song in Reaper. Since Reaper does not include many plugins, he was trying to get his students on the same page so that they could follow along. https://www.groove3.com/r...First-Song-with-REAPER I have an all access pass to Groove3 and this was a new tutorial that seemed like it had some good tips that could really apply to any DAW.

Thanks again everyone. Because the Sonar X1 LE is telling me that the soft synths may not be properly installed, I uninstalled the programme, then re-installed it again, but the soft synths are still not there. Does anyone know if I can install 'soft synths' that will allow me to play a Korg Taktile midi controller keyboard? Meantime, I have bought the wee Korg keyboard, and so far unable to get a single note out it...frustration!

Your Korg should be fine. You just need to get a VST soft synth instrument set up in X1. This video is a great tutorial for how to set up your soft synths in X1. If you follow this you should be able to determine if you have any installed instruments yet. If not. just try one of the many free instruments available. If you install one, be aware that some have installer programs that let you select the VST plugin path. Others just have you unzip the contents to a VST plugin path. Read their instructions! In either case, you need to know where you put the plugin so you can follow the directions in the video to set it up. CAKEWALK SONAR X1 - How to use SoftSynths

I found my LE install disk. I went to install it on my office machine and realized, I don't believe it will install to Windows 10 !! I think X3 is as far back as you dare go. SO I'm just installing it now to a Acer Netbook I use for lyrics. Its XP 32 bit. First thing I noticed is the install did not give me the option for 32 or 64 bit which is normally the first thing you see. I chose Custom install and under VST there is the following Sound Centre Square 1 SI drums I will see if TTS_1 is there once it opens. So might be your running Windows 10, 64 bit and this is a 32 bit only version. Once it installs to the netbook I'll pop the disk in my W10 machine and see what happens. Right now it's updating all the Visual C ++2005 stuff.

A Cakewalk installer will not provide the 32/64bit install option when running the installer on a 32bit OS. Why provide an option to install something that could not run on the OS?

Well that was a total waste of time. After it installed it now just shows an error report and will not run. I even tried running as Administrator. Also I realized at no point did it ask for my serial number. Steve it turns out it is only 32 bit. I'm installing it now to my W10 desktop and there was no option for 64 bit and it shows installing to the Program 86 folder. Well seems to work fine in Windows 10 , funny there's no serial/ registration number nag? Only problem with this computer is I already have Splat so it populated the synths so I cannot tell if LE came with TTS-1 but I would think it did. Also it's interesting that it opened with my SPlat screenset view and all the VST are listed in the browser to the right. I was hoping to give clear instructions to the OP onn how to view the VST's. I guess I'll need to install this to a W7 computer that does not have Sonar already to see what's up but I'm afraid ALL my computers have Sonar minus my 2 W XP 32 bit netbooks.

Watched the video sent by Abacab, it is very informative. It appears that my soft synths are not installed properly. I only have the standard effects plugin's Compressor, Modulation ETC I have tried to re-install a few times using the Sonar disc but they still fail to install. The video suggests that Sonar LE scans for soft synths on opening the programme, yet it shows no error when I open. My fear of downloading third party software is 'PC infection'. Can anyone suggest a good safe site please Best JockStrat

Take your pick. http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3542942 Remember, if you are running a 32-bit version of Sonar, look for VST plugins in 32-bit. These are mostly all commercial sites, that offer a few freebies, not shareware sites or any crap like that. I have downloaded them all and they pass my malware scans just fine! BTW, most Sonar users use 3rd party software, in addition to the Cakewalk bundle stuff. The businesses that sell music software could not stay in business for long if they gave away malware. Lousy business model.

I'll vouch for anything Abacab recommends, I've got many of the ones he's posted and there is absolutely no danger. In some cases you purchase them for free and go though a checkout. I would think all the ones posted on KVR site are tested by the members. Be warned some freebies are demos which I avoid as they can make beeping sounds or just stop working. But with the sad collection you get with LE the freebies are the answer. And I would find it hard to believe that TTS-1 was not included and that should work without issue as it's not a VST but a DX(?) plug in. Sorry I don't remember and I cannot test this. A lot of VST's are very simple little dll files which you drag and drop to the VST or Shared VST folder. Sonar does scan for vst's on start up by default. You can shut this off in preferences. You can also open the TOOLS/PLUG IN MANAGER and see what was scanned. You can use the plug in manager to manually scan and select folders that might have been missed, like in my case the Steinberg VST folder. You can also see what was installed by looking here- in your case this will be the Program Files(x82) folder Did you try the custom install and check to see if the 3 VST I posted above boxes are checked? Which version of windows are you using?

Hey Cactus, I just found my copy of Sonar LE that came bundled with a keyboard back in 2011, it's Sonar 8.5 LE, but never installed it. Says it includes Cakewalk Sound Center, Rapture LE, and Studio Instruments Drums. The Home Studio would offer a better bundle than that for sure with at least all of the Studio Instruments, Rapture Session, and TH3 guitar amp. https://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR-Home-Studio And how's that EP from Noise Ash? I started to download it, but they wanted me to like them on social media and create an account to get started. I've already got Velvet and Lounge Lizard, so I figured this one could wait, LOL!

Ya I know they wanted a lot but I see the point, they are giving you a freebie but make you jump though hoops or lets say, work for your cookie. I clicked the FB like and it took me to Add to cart. You then have to give your email and full name and address. Oh well. I'm sure I could have made up a name and address but you need the email to receive the download link. Like many, I downloaded it but haven't had time to try it. The demo sounded promising. I've been using SI piano and Lounge Lizard so I'll see how it compares to those.

I think my favorite EP so far is AIR Velvet. It covers more ground than Lounge Lizard Session. With just under a gig of samples, the presets load up pretty quick. I tried comparing a similar Rhodes sound between the two, and I could get them somewhat close by tweaking a few things here and there. I think the difference comes down to sampling vs. modelling technology. Velvet has the Fender Rhodes Mark 1, Mark2, SC73, the Wurly A200, and the Hohner Pianet, and 350+ presets.
