Instrument sound change

I'm working with a midifile. I cloned a saxophone lead track so that I could change the instrument sound half way through the solo on a separate track in order to change it to another instrument  (example - acoustic guitar or perhaps a synth). When I right click on the midi icon to change on the cloned track I get the replace synth option. When I double click the midi icon the TTS-1 option comes up. How to change the The TTS-1 sound from sax to another sound? If I try the replace synth option, it seems to have an effect on other tracks as well. Suggestions please. Simply, I'd like to change the midi sound to another on the cloned track only from sax to another sound. Also, some of the synth options show a level but can't hear, not sure how to change that. Thanks in advance for any advice.

you need to change the OUTPUT of that particular MIDI track only to the new patch you want it to be.

if your sonar isn't currently showing ALL parameters on the tracks, change it to ALL (pull down menu at the top of the track properties list).  then expand the MIDI track you are wanting to change by dragging the bottom of the track down until you see all of the Input/output parameters.  then on the BANK and PATCH, change those to the sound you want that particular track to make.

NOTE:  if you have cloned this track from another MIDI track, you'll also want to change the CHANNEL to something other than what is already used or you'll end up having issues with it not changing the patch correctly because it will be sending the MIDI to the wrong channel on TTS-1.

So close but still struggling. When I click the output in the track view it shows 1-Cakewalk TTS-1. When I click the midi channel (under the output) it shows the midi channel I've changed to (in this case 9) So then I open up the TTS window and change the sound to a trumpet in channel 9. I can hear the trumpet sample and it shows in the window. I then click and the Patch Name window opens and reads trumpet. I then click ok. Close the windows and play the track. it now defaults back to the original sound (which is a fiddle) I'm still missing some step. As far as the suggestion of changing to "All" parameters (pull down menu at the top of the track properties list) I'm stumped abit there. In the top left view I see "track" and click it, then properties. It shows track name ... but not sure how to find "ALL" in order to change. Thanks Beagle for your help.

Have you gone through the tutorials in the manual? Tutorial 4 covers the things I think you are having trouble with. Look for the heading "What if I already have a project that contains MIDI tracks?". This section has you load a sample project that routes several tracks to a single instance of TTS-1. Should be helpful I think.

    Here's the process I follow:
    • Add a soft synth
    • Add a midi track for each part
    • Set the output of midi tracks to the synth (as in the tutorial)
    • Load the soft synth instruments you want use
    • Set the channels of each mid track to the channel of an instrument in the synth
Hope that helps! Keep at it and you'll get it.

DRanck, thanks for that advice. The tutorials in the manual. Where do I find those? Where do I find the manual? There are so many options, cake tv, cake university, etc. Can you direct me where the manuals are? What I'm trying to do should be a very easy adjustment and I'm sure it is for many, but as a part-timer hobbyist, this is frustrating as well as time consuming.

With TTS-1 and many other soft synths, you change the patch in the MIDI track pane, not in the synth GUI.

check the event viewer and see if there is a hard patch change embedded in the MIDI track.  if so, nothing you do to the track properties will stop it from changing unless you delete that event.

Beagle, that pic icon you have is so perfect with having to deal with amateurs like myself. Not sure where the event viewer is and how to check for a hard patch. If I have to delete the event, I guess that means I've lost the use of that midi solo in the track. If so, then so be it. I've spent too much time trying to figure it out. When I change the patch in the TTS, I can hear the sound I want, but when I play it back with the midifile, It defaults back to the orignial sound, not sure how to change that, I've tried many options, it shouldn't be that difficult. Thanks for everyone's assistance.

The event view is accessed by using the "view" menu.

It's a long list of every MIDI event, notes, controllers, velocities, patch changes etc.

The instrument change when you play the track is probably because the track contains a patch change instruction. These are often near or at the beginning, but can be found at the point the patch change occurs if they aren't.

If there is a patch change which switches the instrument to one you don't want all that deleting that patch change will do is stop that switch from happening. If in doubt do a "save as" and save the project under a new name so you've still got the original just in case.

tlw, I did assess the "view" menu (which shows items like "navigator show/hide, and "midi microscope" as examples) I don't see a long list of options like "notes, controllers, patch changes" as you described. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. When I do find this list, how do I know where a patch change would be and how to delete it? I appreciate your assistance. thanks.

Sorry, away from home and relying on memory which obviously isn't as good as I thought.

The events list can be opened either by right-clicking on a clip and selecting "events view" or on the track(s) you want to look at and then Views>Events list.

How to find any programme changes and how to set TTS-1 to the right instrument is covered in this thread:
