Can't get my SI to work as plug-in 2008/04/19 12:47:49 (permalink)
Is anyone else having the problem of SI not installing as a plug-in? I followed the instructions for installation, made sure the path pointed to the default Cakewalk plug-ins common folder path.... but then when I go to my Sonar and select View/Synth Rack, Insert Soft Synths and Rewire devices, Studio Instruments is not there to choose from. Anyone have an idea what's going on with this?
Thanks!
John

John,
Did you run the VST scanner after you installed SI?
If you have the scan at startup turned off, you will need to manually run it to recognize any new VSTs.
If you did that, check submenu's in the Soft synth drop down menu. A lot of times, VST's will get tucked into these, depending how you directed the install.

RE: getting SI to work as plug-in 2008/04/21 14:56:40 (permalink)
Robert: you nailed it, thanks! I was not running the VST Scanner - once I did that, it let me select all 4 SI's and then after I did the soft synth pull-down, they were all in a sub-menu, all 4 SI's. When I select each, they automatically launch now. Cool ! Up till now I was using them in stand-alone mode and drag-n-drop them into a MIDI track. Even that worked well enough, but I knew they were supposed to work as a plug-in.
Hey I'll check out your SoundClick page tonight I don't have sound on my work PC here; my page is "FreeAfter5" on SoundClick and I'm just getting started.
thanks again!
regards,
John

Good deal, glad to help.
The string section is surprisingly nice, especially if you use a MIDI controller. I'm getting some mileage out of the others, but this is definitely my favorite part of SI.
Enjoy!

I guess you get what you pay for. Check out the Scarbee electric pianos. They'e always sounded best to my ears. www.scarbee.com

I ended up buying the Studio Instruments. I got a good deal on it and I like the strings. Although truthfully i have similar if not better sound banks in Dimension Pro. I also added the Studio Proteus expansion strings pack and "that rocks!" So added with what already exists in Dimension plus I also have some nice dark strings in Rapture I find I don't use the Studio Instruments that much.
Dimension has some nice electric pianos...

HURRA! I got the SI but how to make it a part of my project. I mean, I want to lay it down on the track (midi track), so I can see all the wave and so on.
Yes, it is showing up as a plug in.

Thanks for your help.

RE: Studio Instruments as plug-in 2008/06/06 10:42:41 (permalink)
Losano: sorry you've been a couple days with no reply, I just now checked back here on the SI forum; I spend more time over on the MC4 forum.

If you are still having the problem of SI not operating as a plug-in, it's most commonly the same issue I had above (see a couple of posts above this one). RobertB helped point me to the VST scanner step, and that's what puts it into the drop-down list of "plug-ins" from the SoftSynth drop-down menu.

Aside from that, your wording indicates perhaps not being fully clear about how to USE the plug-ins. You said: "...I want to lay it down on the track (midi track), so I can see all the wave and so on. " When you open up a softsynth you should have TWO tracks - one MIDI, the other Audio. You do not "see all the wave..." in any MIDI track - MIDI will not show up as a wave, only like, dashes. Technically, those dashes are instructions or directions, for the system to process sound THROUGH an audio (wave) output.

So, make sure you're working withh SI as a softsynth, into an audio track or if you insert MIDI from any source INTO the MIDI track, make sure its output is set to go out to the audio track, so you'll hear it. Hope this helps, and best wishes in your recording!

Thanks, JD1813 for this info, I didn't know that SI can be use on an audio track.
No, there is no problem with my plug-in, for SI it is showing as one of the plug-in, I will follow your advise as soon as I get Home.

Log onto your account in the Cakewalk store.
Your serial number and registration code should both be posted there.
If you just downloaded it, and it doesn't show up, try again in a little while.

Studio Instruments has a nice EPiano.

Sure, the drum kit is fine-but nowhere near as good in features compared to others.

Paul, Insert Studio Instruments into your project like any other synth. I usually insert from the toolbar. Insert> Softsynths> Studio Instruments>Strings.
Are you wanting to play the strings live, with a controller, or punch in via the PRV, or use the included loops?
I have a song up right now in the Songs forum that features the SI string section. It was done with a controller, and the SI strings respond well to live input.

I recorded a song with three guitar pieces playing off each other. I thought it would sound real
nice with some strings. I don't have a piano or keyboard of any kind. I'm guessing you could hook up
a keyboard and play live through the keys. So, I would like to play live/ in actual time and not prerecorded ( my own playing)
I guess I could do it with my computer keys but I don't know how to do that or play live against my song and record it.

Do you know what I'm after?

If you want to record your own playing, you will need either a MIDI controller, or a keyboard that has a MIDI output.
Your computer keyboard won't work.
Have you explored the Piano Roll in SHS6 yet? Without a keyboard, you would have to use that to enter your notes, using a mouse. It's a bit tedious, but doable. Many people have done some very nice tracks this way.
If you would prefer to play your tracks live, a keyboard /controller is an essential component. I wouldn't be without mine, and do most of my MIDI tracks live.

You're welcome.
On a side note, you might want to consider browsing the Music Creator forum. MC is virtually the same as SHS, and we deal with a lot of issues common to new users there. It's a comfortable room, and a great place to get your legs under you.

RE: Introducing Studio Instruments! 2008/08/11 19:34:12 (permalink)
ok,( I'm back ) I bought keyrig49 to ad some strings and piano to my songs.
I have one song that I have added strings too and now I want to add some piano to the same song
or others and I don't know what I did to get the strings to work but now I can't get anything to work'
or at least record.

If you have this product or something similar.
It's SHS studio instruments and keyrig 49 from m-audio to shs6

To tell the truth I rather use the keyrig piano, rather than studio instruments
and not use soft synth, unless that's the only way.

If you could give me the run down on how to record shs studio instruments to record everytime on shs6
using m audio keyrig 49 as the midi input. and I already no to use soft syth and add it as a plug in
but it still doesn't record after that.

So, if you could tell me, step by step how to proceed, that would be great,
thanks, Paul

That's a good move, Paul. I think you will enjoy working with the keyrig.
I think you might not be entirely clear on the concept here. The main point of the keyrig is to give you a way to control soft synths.
This puts a world of sound at your fingertips. If you like a sound that came with the keyrig software, you can use that. If the Studio instruments sounds fit, you can use those. You have access to thousands of different sounds, all of which you can control and play with your keyrig.
It would probably be best to continue this discussion in the SHS or MC forums.
I do have Studio Instruments and SHS6XL, but my controller is different(Edirol PCR-M50). That doesn't really matter, as they all work pretty much the same.
Let me know where you want to pick up, and we'll get you rollin'.

What DAW do you use? It happens in Cubase 4,other users and Cakewalk are in principle also confirmed this but no hotfix so far, as there was for Dimension Pro

This is great I am excited to have it. It is alreadt registered and I have a registration code on file. The problem is it is beyond the thirty days grace period and it won't allow me to put the registration code in. Well, I can't use it. I thought I had put it throught this process but after a couple of weeks of not using it. The time has expired and it prompts me for the registration code. I can't use it now!!! Is it just useless and I am plain out of luck or is there a way to do this? I thought I would check here before I contact technical support. Maybe you guys know and it would be faster. Can anyone help me?

If your code is on file (which would mean online) then you must copy it and paste it.. then you should be fine. So copy and Paste it from your online account that cakewalk sets up for you automatically (this is where you see the resgisteration code). To your prompt to screen when you open the Cakewalk instruments. IF that doesn't work then unistall and re-install your SIs again..
