I find many of the VST's I use by reading this forum and others up stairs from time to time. I see someone mention a synth or FX and go check it out. I've found quite a few interesting and many free VST's that way.

That's because I've got so many it might burn your computer out listing them so Google won't let me show up anymore. Nah, Mesh was just joshin. I've really only got 2 or 3 hundred of the dern things. But I will tell you this: I believe that if an ol feller or gal had Komplete 7, Amplitube 3, two or three of the best drum packages...say BFD, EZ or Superior, Addictive...Omnisphere, Trilian and Stylus...all the FabFilter plugs...all the Sound Toys plugs...and Nomad Factory's Magnetic for good measure...he or she would have a pretty sweet setup. Throw in a fully loaded UAD Quad and you'd be a force to be reckoned with.

Although I do have Nexus 2, which I'm really loving. The sounds just make me want to make music, know what I mean. And even though it doesn't have some of the options other synths have, it's ease of use makes up for a lot. For example, I raelly love how they put the trance gate in. @ Bit, I think we are starting to get to the point where you're getting diminishing returns. There's a lot of really good sounding stuff out there. I wonder how much better it can really get. I guess I will just have to buy the next couple upgrades to find out !

yorolpal ...all the Sound Toys plugs... So, olpal, this is the second time I recall seeing your mention of Sound Toys as exceptional plugs. And I don't recall ever seeing anyone else ever talk about them, let alone speak of them highly. I checked out their web site and noticed they seem awfully pricey for what they do. So what is it about them that you find so appealing?

I've heard very high praise of the SoundToys plugins several times... that said I don't have them. I've got most of what's on Ol Pal's list and can say I use a lot whats on there a lot of the time. It's good stuff!

Sound Toys were developed by the same folks responsible for all the high-dollar-in-every-major-studio-and-used-by-most-top-level-mixers-and-producers Eventide hardware products. So they really know effects. The plugs are also very popular with the "upper echelon" of mixers and producers. This is certainly no real reason that you should use them BUT...the dern things are just plain fabulous. They are capable of giving almost anything you need from an effect standpoint and doing it with ease of use and great flexibility. And they sound great. And really, for the Native bundle, they are not that expensive. For about $500 you get seven different plugins that are top shelf. I'm pretty sure you can demo them. Try them...I bet you end up buying. Now to my only caveats regarding Mitch and the boys at Sound Toys. They are STILL not 64 bit and up until recently they wouldn't run reliably in 64bit Sonar using either BitBridge or JBridge. They have just released a patch that at least lets them work in 64bit Sonar...but still a bit sketchy. Instead of porting their entire line to 64 bit as I think they should...they seem intent on simply releasing new products. They also started out as "Mac only" I believe so their support for PC users is a little soft. I was able to use them for about 8 months on my old 32bit DAW (with absolutely no problems) before I got my new hot 64bit DAW and discovered they would no longer work. That hurt. While I've got other top shelf plugs that cover some of the same bases...I was hooked on Sound Toys. At least now I can use them again. I encourage you to check out reviews and others opinions about them and also who all uses them. Then try them out.

I've got to say I'm using the Sound Toys "decimiator" or is it "decapitator" a lot. It's a distortion plugin. A little bit of that really adds some spice to many sounds. I've also found their panning plugin to be pretty handy. Some of their other ones are pretty cool as well, but I'm still getting my head around them. They are quite powerful for sound design, and you really need to use them early in the song, otherwise you might not have room for them.

I wonder how much better it can really get. When the first motion pictures began to be exhibited, early audiences were sometimes so freaked out by the realism they fled the theater. And those were just black & white silent shorts. Seeing Avatar in 3D would have made them puke. Our definition of high fidelity has been a moving target since the term was coined. Same with our expectations of realism. Remember the first time you heard a sampler? Wow, you thought, it sounds like there's an orchestra in the room! Don't those old samples sound quaint and lo-fi today? They might still sound good, in a nostalgic way, but they're not going to fool anybody into thinking they're a real orchestra - but there was a time when they did! Miroslav Philharmonik was once considered the height or faux-orchestral realism, and it originally sold for $4,000. Nowadays, it's considered entry-level due to its limited articulations and single-velocity layers and it sells for $200 (periodically less). What will we consider state-of-the-art in a few years from now? I can't even imagine. But I'm pretty sure the evolutionary process is far from over. In fact, I think it's just getting started.

I'm not sure what the law of diminishing returns is but in my mind it applies to miniscule advances over the previous iteration and the need to upgrade computers to run the new version. Remember that Simpsons episode when the kids were upset by the new Star Wars so they complained to George Lucas? He said something like "these new movies are better than ever now that we have finally mastered digital eyelash rendering"! I like the effect VSTs but am completely over software samplers. It's actually quicker to record audio from a real instrument or hardware sampler than it is to fiddle around with MIDI using tiny blocks in the PRV. My advice to those people who bemoan how many crap VSTs they have is to sell all their rubbish off and buy a pair of Coles 4038s One question to Fabfilter owners though. I have had a crack with them- very, very impresssed-and would like to buy them. Do they require dongles ,do they have limited authorizations or anything like that?

In the future for about $250 give or take, we will have the entire London Philharmonic in our bedroom...not a software emulation but the actual London Philharmonic...it will be crowded. And if it is in the summer, rather stuffy.

Thanks bitflipper, that's all I needed. Edit: In the end decided Voxengo GlissEq and Elephant while not as pretty would do just as good a job as Fabfilter equivalents. Saved megabucks $$$!!! They are all 64 bit also. I think next computer I get I'm only going to install select Cakewalk plugins- the 64 bit ones- and augment those with a small selection of high quality 3rd party effects. Having great 3rd party VSTs really makes one question what DAW one should be using doesn't it?
