Read a bio about him last year... it was fascinating.

Yeah, I read something like that about him by a novelist that does a lot of books featuring his adventures, I can't recall the authors name just now.

The thing that stood out for me was his awareness of his temporary status on the planet and a drive to make a big impression while he was here.

I think he succeeded.

There's only 1 person on this entire forum who I don't like, and I haven't blocked him. I told him off recently which is something I rarely do, but I have never blocked anyone. I'm not saying anything bad about blocking and I completely understand why some choose to do it. I have the attention span of ... sorry, what was I saying? Anyway, once I shut down the forum page whatever has been said is usually gone and forgotten almost immediately.

Sometimes people just rub you the wrong way and there's nothing you can do about it.

that part was just a joke, bub.  I have had some serious problems with a few people on the forums.  most of which are not the long timers, but randy is not one I have a problem with - we just like to jabb at each other.

I have never blocked anyone in the whole 30,000 posts, even if I have a complete disdain for them.   I'd rather know what they're saying even if I dislike them.

Pffft...why mess with perfection? Other than the online "Modesty" course I'm taking, I'm in a good place.

X1 is supposed to change everything.  just ask bapu.  It might even cure that fungus you've been having problems with.

I'm not sure calling Bapu a fungus is helpful.

Mike, check out the film "Mongol", a purportedly semi-factual account of Genghis Khan's early life and apparently the first installment of a planned trilogy. I say "purportedly" factual because not much is really known about the guy other than from oral traditions, stories that I'm sure have been embellished over the years. But it was filmed in Mongolia with Mongolian and Chinese actors, and has at least an authentic look about it. Historical accuracy aside, it is certainly no dry history lesson, but an entertaining if brutal action/revenge flick.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks Bit, I was wondering if there might be a movie out.

The bio I just read indicated that there actually is quite a lot known about Genghis Kahn for a person of his times, and that is because even though he killed all the powerful political people in the areas he conquered he also kept most of the scholars and traders around and encouraged them to do there thing.

One thing that was a great surprise to me is the claim that the hidden city in Peking was actually an estate where the conquering mongols maintained their privacy because they understood that the Chinese were compliant only because they were convinced that they had been conquered by a divinely blessed enemy. The Mongols however were just a bunch of rowdy, fermented milk drinking wild men and they knew they needed a private estate to hang out in otherwise the Chinese would wise up to the fact that the Mongols weren't much different and in fact ineffectual in the hotter, humid coastal regions. The Chinese paid their tribute and the legends of the hidden city as a home of the divine was popularized.

Anyways, thanks for the recommendation.

best regards,
mike
